Why Am I Wearing a Box? (Unpacking Boxes)

I remember when I first started in Second Life and bought a pair of glasses. It came “boxed” or “packed”. I had no idea what that meant, so I tried on the “glasses”. I right clicked the item in my inventory and selected wear and had a box on my head. As odd as that sounds, it's a common occurrence.

When you buy something, it might be delivered in a number of ways. It could be delivered to your Received Items folder, to your Inventory or to the Objects folder (also in Inventory). No matter to which of the three places that the item is delivered, it could either come ready to use or it could come boxed or packed. Usually if you see multiple items in a folder all similarly named, then it is an item that's ready to go. A quick check is to simply right click the item and then select Add. If a box attaches to your right hand or another part of your body, then it need to be unpacked. And the process is really pretty easy.

Some items are ready to unpack. By that I mean, once you right click and add it to your avatar, you can just click it and it will unpack. You will see a blue menu pop-up - click “Accept”. It will automatically create a folder in your inventory and the items will be unpacked and ready to use. Look for the new folder in inventory.

If the item does not unpack automatically, then detach it from your avatar and go to a sandbox or another place that lets you rez items, such as Firestorm Sandbox.

Once there, open your inventory and locate the item that needs to be unpacked. Click the item and while you hold down the mouse-button, drag the item to the ground. You should see the item rez on the ground. One you see the item on the ground, right click it and select “Open”. A new menu will pop up, with two options “Copy to Inventory” or “Cancel”. Click “Copy to Inventory” to unpack. It will create a new folder in your inventory with your unpacked items in there.

If neither of these methods have worked, then there is one last method to unpack an item. Right click the item and select “Edit” from the menu. You will see the Edit menu pop-up on your screen. The Edit menu has several tabs across the middle of it. You want the very last tab: “Content”. Click the Content tab and you will see a folder. Right click that folder and select “Copy”. Then go to your Inventory and right the folder named Inventory (at the very top of your inventory) and select Paste. In the alternate, click the folder in the Content tab Click and while you hold down the mouse-button, drag the item to your Inventory (again, the folder named Inventory)..

Last thing - if you rezzed an item on the ground, you should right click it and select “delete”. You don't want to go around littering Second Life with your boxes.
