Stored Passwords

Firestorm stores usernames and passwords in an encrypted credentials file inside your user settings folder. This file can only be used on one computer; it can't be decoded on a different computer.

Disabling Login Credentials

If you don't want the viewer to store passwords:

  1. Launch the viewer but do not log in.
  2. Uncheck both the Remember username and Remember password options (just to the right of the Log In button)
  3. If there is a username listed in the Username field, click the Trashcan icon next to it. Repeat as desired for other stored credentials.

Failed to Decode Login Credentials

Firestorm may complain that it cannot decode the credentials when you launch the viewer. This can be because of any of these reasons:

  • there is actual corruption in the file
  • the file came from a different computer
  • you had an operating system update
  • your network changed so that you appear to be on a different computer.

In some cases you can simply re-enter your credentials and the file will self-repair. If it warns you on each login, it will be necessary to delete the credentials file.

  1. Launch Firestorm, then find your user settings folder by going to PreferencesNetwork & Files -> Directories and click Open Settings Folder.
  2. Quit Firestorm
  3. Have you quit Firestorm? The viewer must be closed. Please quit Firestorm.
  4. Locate and delete the file called bin_conf.dat.

If you backup your settings, also delete the bin_conf.dat file in your backup folder before attempting to use the restore option.

If none of this helps, you will have to enter your login information manually. Refer to these two SL bug reports:

Note: If you have deleted the bin_conf.dat file and newly entered credentials still refuse to save, you may have to reenter them more than once. The cause of this is not known, but may be whatever has caused the problem on your system in the first place. The problem generally resolves itself eventually. Things to try:

  • Empty your computer trash
  • Reboot your computer
  • Run disk repairs or disk checks
  • Make sure the viewer is fully whitelisted in your antivirus (this includes Windows Defender). See Whitelisting Firestorm for instructions.

Windows Users Only: KMSpico Windows Activator

KMSpico Windows Activator has been reported to interfere with stored passwords. Solution: Uninstall KMSpico Windows Activator.

If you are unsure whether you have KMSpico Windows Activator, you should be able to see it running as a process in Task Manager. NOTE: There are valid KMS services. The problematic one has “pico” in the name.
