Why Am I Wearing a Box? (Unpacking Boxes)

I remember when I first started in Second Life and bought a pair of glasses. It came “boxed” or “packed”. I had no idea what that meant, so I tried on the “glasses”. I right clicked the item in my inventory and selected wear and had a box on my head. As odd as that sounds, it's a common occurrence.

When you buy something, it might be delivered in a number of ways. It could be delivered to your (1) Received Items folder, or to your (2) Inventory or to the (3) Objects folder (also in Inventory).
No matter which of the three places that the item is delivered, it could either come ready to use or it could come boxed or packed.
In the photo below, I've received an object. I “added” it, by right clicking on the “box” in my inventory, then the following bag was rezzed in my hand. (This is due to a script in the object.)

Now, I got the clothing (or items) out of the bag by right clicking the bag and I chose “unpack” when a blue window popped up on my screen. These items went to my Inventory.

TIP: If you can't remember the name of the items, you can click the “Recent” tab at the top of your Inventory window. It should be the first folder you find there.
To get the package (box) off your avatar, right click it and choose detach. Some packages delete themselves when you unpack them.

Some designers have a logo that will show on your screen, and to “unpack” those, click the logo. A menu will come up to the right of your screen, and you should click “Accept” or “Unpack”.
All items will go to your Inventory. See the example of a screen logo in the photo below

Some items are ready to unpack. By that I mean, once you right click and add it to your avatar, you can just click it and it will unpack.

If the item does not unpack automatically, then detach it from your avatar and go to a sandbox or another place that lets you rez items, such as Firestorm Sandbox.

Once there, open your inventory and locate the item that needs to be unpacked. Click the item and while you hold down the mouse-button, drag the item to the ground. You should see the item rez on the ground. One you see the item on the ground, right click it and select “Open”. A new menu will pop up, with two options “Copy to Inventory” or “Cancel”. Click “Copy to Inventory” to unpack. It will create a new folder in your inventory with your unpacked items in there.

If neither of these methods have worked, then there is one last method to unpack an item. Right click the item and select “Edit” from the menu. You will see the Edit menu pop-up on your screen. The Edit menu has several tabs across the middle of it. You want the very last tab: “Content”. Click the Content tab and you will see a folder. Right click that folder and select “Copy”. Then go to your Inventory and find the folder named Inventory (at the very top of your inventory) and select Paste.
Last thing - if you rezzed an item on the ground, you should right click it and select “take” or “delete”. You don't want to go around littering Second Life with your boxes.
