Intel Issues

Windows 10 and Intel Stuck at Initializing VFS

If you have Intel Graphics HD, Intel Graphics HD2500 and Intel Graphics HD4000, and are using the 64bit version of Firestorm 5.0.7 or later, on Windows 10, refer to this page.

Viewer freezes while "Loading world..."

If you have Intel HD 620 or Intel HD 630, and Windows 10 – This is an Intel driver issue. The fix is to roll back to driver 24.20.100.6025. Download Legacy Intel® Graphics Driver for Windows® 10 Version: 24.20.100.6025 (Ref. BUG-225655.)

Outdated Driver Error

If you are on Windows 10, and get an error such as this:

Firestorm is unable to run because your video card drivers did not install properly or are out of date, or are for unsupported hardware. Please make sure you have the latest video card drivers, and even if you do have the latest, try reinstalling them. If you continue to receive this message, contact the Second Life Support Portal

First, make sure your drivers are fully updated

If this does not help, then refer to our fix for outdated Intel graphics.

If you are on Windows 10, and get this error:

Load Library failed with error 1114, Dynamic Link Library (DLL) initiation routine failed

Check first for switchable graphics card: Dual Graphics Issues
If you have Intel graphics only, then use the instructions on this page: Intel Fix 32-bit.

Viewer Screen Is Too Large, Top Menu Bar Is Missing, and Click Area Is Too Low

This is a known issue with recent Intel graphics drivers, affecting other graphics applications besides SL viewers.

  • Many people have received this graphics driver update without realizing it.
  • The problem sometimes appears after a crash.
  • Many users on HP laptops with OEM drivers are having this problem, although it is also affecting others.

What to do:

  • Try rolling back to a previous driver that worked for you.
  1. Method 1 https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/graphics-drivers/000008628.html for instructions. If the Roll Back Driver button is grayed out; see
  • Some users have reported that the following newer driver fixes the problem: Intel® Graphics Driver for Windows* [15.46] Version: 15.46.05.4771 (Latest) Date: 8/23/2017. Download from https://downloadcenter.intel.com. This driver may or may not be available to you depending on your computer.
  • Workaround: Run the viewer in Full Screen Mode. Preferences → Graphics → General → Fullscreen Mode, then relog.

More information: Please refer to FIRE-21264 for more information and to report any additional details about the issue.

Graphics Issues After Win10 Update

If you start experiencing graphics issues after a Win10 update, such as driver crashes, or simply very poor performance, the first thing to try is a full computer reboot.

If that doesn't help, reinstall your graphics card driver from the card maker's website, not from Windows. That is, from nVidia, AMD, or Intel.

If you have Intel HD 2000 or 3000 graphics, refer to this page.

Laptop dual graphics issues

If your laptop has an Intel CPU and also has either an AMD or Nvidia graphics system, it may have the ability to switch between the Integrated Intel graphics (for power savings) and the AMD/Nvidia (for performance). But sometimes Firestorm isn't automatically configured to use the high-performance graphics.

You can confirm this issue by looking at Help → About Firestorm and checking the name of the graphics card listed. If it says Intel, please follow the steps on this page.

Intel 500 Series & Flickering

Screen is Flashing on certain Graphics Settings

This mysterious flashing problem has been reported numerous times now and after some investigation we believe we finally have a repro for what's causing the issue. We do not yet know the specifics of exactly which systems are affected.

Typically the issue arises when Worn Rigged Mesh is in view and has at least one texture containing alpha and set to alpha blend mode. Alpha masking and emissive mask do not reproduce the problem.

We have also verified that this reproduces using the Official LL Viewer.

The Following Table shows which systems and drivers we have tested and whether they reproduce the Flashing Issue.

Graphics CardDriverOperating SystemRepoduced
Intel(R) HD Graphics 530 10.18.0015.4271 Windows 10 64-bit (Build 10240) Yes

Intel(R) HD Graphics 530 20.19.0015.4352Microsoft Windows 10 64-bit (Build 10586) NO This Driver does NOT reproduce the issue

The Driver Version linked in the above table (DRIVER VERSION: 15.40.14.64.4352 & 15.40.14.32.4352) Has not reproduced the issue for us and is the Driver we recommend that you download direct from Intel.

If you receive the following Message when installing the Intel Driver:

The driver being installed is not validated for this computer. Please obtain the appropriate driver from the computer manufacturer.
This is an indication that you have an OEM Driver installed by the manufacturer. This Leaves you with two options:
  • Check the website (or contact support) of your specific PC manufacturer and check for updates.
  • Uninstall the OEM Driver and install the Intel Driver direct from Intel. This method is carried out At Your Own Risk
Temporary Work Around

If decide to wait for an update from your computer manufacturer, or are simply uncertain about removing an installed driver, the following steps may help to make things more tolerable for you until your drivers are updated.

  • If ALM is disabled the flashing will always reproduce unless Hardware skinning is disabled.
  • If ALM is enabled the flashing will only reproduce when the avatar wearing the alpha blended rigged mesh is standing in Linden water.
    • If Hardware Skinning is disabled, the flashing stops in this case too.

Note: If you install the recommended driver above and still experience issues please read the related jira FIRE-17290 and add your details to the comments. Instructions for using the Jira can be found HERE

Firestorm Viewer Downloads For Second Life

OpenSIM versions of FS do not have Havok. That only matters if you're uploading mesh objects and need to specify the mesh physics properties, or if you need to manipulate the region navmesh for pathfinding. The terms of the Havok license prohibit its use anywhere but Second Life, so it's not present in OpenSim versions.

Firestorm Viewer is certified to be free of viruses and malware.

Supported Operating Systems

Windows

  • Windows 7 SP1, 8.1 and 10 32bit and 64bit are supported.
Earlier versions of windows are not supported.
  • Firestorm 5.1.7 & 6.0.1 will NOT even install on Windows XP.
  • Firestorm 5.1.7 & 6.0.1 may install on Windows Vista but is likely to be very unstable.
  • Windows 10 - Firestorm 5.1.7 & 6.0.1 are compatible with Windows 10.
However, if you are running Windows 10 on a system with an older Intel graphics card which does not support Windows 10 - Intel HD 2000, Intel HD 3000 or anything marked as “No” for Windows 10 on this list,
you will only be able to run the 32bit versions of Firestorm 5.1.7 & 6.0.1 even if you have a 64bit version of Windows 10.
Please see this page for detailed instructions if you are running Windows 10 on an older unsupported Intel card and have problems running Firestorm 5.1.7 or 6.0.1.

Mac

  • Mac 10.9 or later OS X versions are supported.
  • MacOS Mojave 10.14 will run Firestorm 5.1.7. viewer and newer.
  • Mac PPC is not supported.
  • Firestorm 5.1.7 & 6.0.1 viewers will NOT run on Mac 10.6, 10.7, 10.8, 10.9, or 10.10.

Linux

  • We use Debian to build our Linux viewer. Any actively maintained, up-to-date Debian-based distribution should be able to run Firestorm. However, due to the variety of distributions and SL's small Linux user-base, we cannot provide testing and support beyond those systems that our own team use. Feel free to submit details of your success and/or failure to any Firestorm team member or to the Firestorm Jira.
  • Some additional libraries and/or packages may be needed; they are listed on this page.
  • Certain older unsupported hardware may not be able to support Firestorm.

Echec De La Connexion

(Waiting for Region Handshake)

Voice Issues

Please note: Viewers play a minor part in voice functionality. The bulk of voice support is given by the external application called SLVoice, which is made by the SL voice provider, Vivox. Voice failures are almost always due to one of the following reasons:

  • Your ISP is throttling or blocking the voice service;
  • failure of the Vivox service;
  • voice issues on the region you are on;
  • voice being throttled by bandwidth set incorrectly - please check it by following the instructions here;
  • voice hardware (mic, headset) not configured correctly in your operating system settings;
  • voice hardware not configured correctly in the viewer;
  • another application has your voice hardware in use (example, Skype);
  • your anti virus software has “mangled” the voice application; see steps on this page: here.

  • your firewall is blocking slvoice. Add slvoice to your firewall's exclusion/allow list.
Please go to Voice Echo Canyon when trying to get voice to work. If voice is working correctly for you, anything you say there will be echoed back to you. Once there, relog to last location.

Known Issues

Since 4.7.9, voice has not always connected to the voice servers. This is due to some coding issues that we inherited from the official SL viewer and that code's interaction with the latest voice files. The issue is documented on LL's Jira. A workaround is to disable and then re-enable voice. But if you're presented with the voice connection failure message that tells you “Voice communications will not be available”, you may need to disable voice and then relog before voice will try to reconnect.

Steps:

  • Go to Preferences → Sound & Media → Voice, and untick “Enable Voice.”
  • Relog.
  • Wait 10-20 seconds, or until the viewer has finished rezzing the scene.
  • Re-enable voice.

Version 5.1.7., voice crashes when turning on microphone. See BUG-225293 and FIRE-22940
Fixed on LL Viewer. Fix pending on FS viewer.
Note that the SLVoice executable in this viewer is not compatible with most older viewers; do not copy it into other viewers.http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Release_Notes/Second_Life_Release/5.1.8.518593

Disable When Not in Use

Most voice connection issues happen when the viewer tries to connect to voice during the login process. The workaround is to disable voice before you log out, and then only enable it after logging in when you need it. You can toggle Voice from the Media Controls at the top of the viewer (not enabled by default for Vintage or Latency skins) by hovering over the speaker icon and then checking or unchecking the last checkbox, or by going to Preferences ⇒ Sound & Media ⇒ Voice and checking or unchecking the top option.

Ensure Headset Properly Connected

If you have issues hearing but not being heard, or vice versa, then make sure that your headset is properly connected to your computer. Unplug it, then plug it back in, making sure it is fully inserted.

And on a related note, if you plug your headset in while logged into SL, you will very likely have to relog to get it to be recognised.

Check Voice Settings in your Operating System

Due to the many different versions of each operating system (Windows, linux distros, Mac OSx's), it is very difficult to give specifics for each one. Nonetheless, make sure that your operating system is correctly configured for voice: that voice is going to your headset (or speakers, as you prefer), and that your mic is enabled and configured.

If you can hear people but cannot be heard, or vice versa, it is most likely a problem in this area.

A bit more specifically, for Windows and linux, check in Mixer that SLvoice is listed, and not muted. Check that input and output devices are correct. For Mac, look in the Sound Preference pane.

Some details provided below.

Check Voice Settings in the Viewer

  • Go to PreferencesSound & Media -> Sounds. Find the Voice Chat slider and make sure it is not all to the left. Try increasing the volume.
  • Make sure that Voice chat is enabled on that preferences tab.
  • go to PreferencesSound & Media -> Voice. Click on Audio Device Settings. For Input and Output, use the dropdowns to select your voice devices (headset, microphone, whatever you use). It is best not to leave these at Default.
  • Close Preferences and locate the Mic button on the button bar. Click the Lock checkbox then the actual button, and try speaking (hopefully, you went to Voice Echo Canyon so you can test).

Try Reinstalling Drivers

Try reinstalling the drivers for your sound card, if you have one. Sometimes, these drivers conflict with the sound component of graphics card drivers. Similarly, you may have success by reinstalling your graphics card driver.

If voice still does not work, then continue working through this page.

Voice Is Intermittent

If you find that voice cuts in and out, particularly right after a TP, and at the same time, you notice that things are not rezzing in for you very well (avatars, objects, etc), then the likely cause is that your router is being “overwhelmed” with texture transfers. So reboot your router/modem, and then your computer, and see if the problem is solved.

You can also try adjusting your bandwidth as explained here.

If that does not help, then proceed with the section below.

Voice Worked Fine but Suddenly Doesn't Work

Chances are good that the problem lies with the SL servers or the voice provider, Vivox. Still, there are things you can try:

  • May 2018: If you had a recent Windows update, see this page.
  • Open Preferences, and go to Sound & Media → Voice, and click Reset (circular arrow).
  • Shut down all applications that use, or can use, voice - like Skype, etc. Then relog.
  • What sometimes helps to get voice working is disabling voice in PreferencesSound & Media -> Voice, hitting Ok, waiting a minute and then enabling voice and click Ok. When these methods fail (assuming voice usually works for you) it is usually the Vivox voice servers that are the problem.
  • If this does not work at your current location, go to a region where other people are able to use voice at this time. One possibility is Firestorm Social, but any region where voice is known to be functioning is fine. Disable voice in PreferencesSound & Media -> Voice. Relog, using the last location selection on your login screen. Wait a couple of minutes. Reenable voice. Wait another couple of minutes (in other words, give the connection time to be established). If voice comes on, then the problem may have been the region you were in before. Was voice disabled there? If not, a region restart might solve the problem.
  • Go to Preferences → Network & Files -> Connection and reduce your bandwidth setting to 500 (if it is not already set there). Repeat the above step to toggle voice off and back on. See here for more information on setting your bandwidth properly, but bear in mind that lower levels than those calculated there may be necessary for troubleshooting purposes.
  • Log out of the viewer, then check Task Manager (or equivalent) and see if SLVoice is still running. If so, kill the process, restart the viewer and see if voice connects.
  • Try a relog, or even a reboot of the computer.
  • Sometimes device settings can reset, so check in PreferencesSound & Media -> Voice→ Audio Device Settings, to be sure that the input and output are set correctly.
  • HTTP fetching may be overloading your router; please try the suggestions given here; if they do not help, revert the changes made then return to this page and continue.

Never Been Able to Get Voice to Work

  • Does your headset/microphone work outside of SL? ie when using Skype, Yahoo or MSN
  • Is your voice chat volume turned up and not muted?
  • Is the SLVoice.exe (simply SLVoice on Mac) that is in the Firestorm folder in the exceptions/allowed list for your firewall? If your firewall is turned off, turn it on and add the SLVoice.exe (or SLVoice) anyway.
If your Firewall has SLVoice listed twice, then remove both instances, and allow it again. For Win10, make sure that SLVoice has Private unchecked, and Public checked. If you had these set differently, change them, then close the window, log out of SL, reboot.
  • Check the bandwidth you are actually getting and what you have set in Preferences → Network & Files → Connection. Please refer to this page for specifics.
  • Go to top menu, Advanced → Debug Settings, and in the window that opens, type: Cmdlinedisablevoice - then ensure this is set to FALSE. (Use Crtl-Alt-D to enable the Advanced menu, if it isn't.)

By Operating System

Windows

Some have issues with voice on Firestorm - specifically, “stuttering”, or SLVoice crashing when you unplug a USB device. The only work-around currently is to swap out the voice files.

  • To this end, download this file; save it to your hard drive. Make sure you do not have Firestorm running. Then extract the files to your Firestorm install folder. (For Firestorm 32-bit viewer, this is typically located at C:\Program Files\Firestorm on 32 bit Windows, and C:\Program Files (x86)\Firestorm on Windows 64-bit. For Firestorm 64-bit Viewer, this is typically located at C:\Program Files\Firestorm.) When prompted, allow the replacement of existing files.
Windows Vista and Windows 7

Try disabling compatibility mode, if enabled:

  • Locate your desktop shortcut for Firestorm (if you use the pinned application on the task bar, make sure you pin the Firestorm shortcut, not the running viewer)
  • Right click on the icon and select Properties
  • Select the Compatibility tab
  • Find “Run this program in compatibility mode for:” if it is set then disable this
  • Make sure “Run as Administrator” is enabled (if this is greyed out, then you're probably already running as administrator, so you can ignore this step).
  • Click Apply.
  • Now log back into the viewer, and see if voice works (do you have the white dot over your head?). If not, go to PreferencesSound & Media -> Voice and disable voice; wait a few moments, then re-enable. 1)

On Windows 7, if you find yourself being able to talk but not hear what others say, then a possible solution is to use the sound drivers from Vista. (This needs further confirmation.)

Windows 10

Refer to this for a possible problem/solution. Make sure to check all voice-related settings in Windows carefully.

Mac

All Mac Operating Systems

If you are unable to connect to voice and you are also having problems with teleporting and/or loading your friends list, perhaps along with other things, then see the “Mac-specific” section of this page for instructions and more explanation.

Mojave (10.14.x) (but possibly could happen on others)

If you seem to have voice working (voice dots and green speech indicators show) but can't speak/hear, and your device doesn't show in PreferencesSound & Media -> Voice→ Audio Device Settings, you may be able to use your Mac Audio MIDI Setup to fix this.

  1. Go to your Mac Utilities folder and open Audio MIDI Setup.
  2. Look for your headset/mic in the list.
  3. If your device shows there, proceed:
  4. Click the + sign and choose “Create Multi-Output Device.”
  5. In the new Multi-Output Device that appears, select your headset/mic.
  6. If you have Firestorm open, relog so it can find the new Device.
  7. Go to PreferencesSound & Media -> Voice→ Audio Device Settings, and select your new “Multi-Output Device.”
  • This fix has not been extensively tested. Feedback and suggestions are welcome.
  • Thanks to user Zuzu Zong for the suggestion.
Mojave (10.14.x)

Check Mac System Prefs → Security & Privacy → Privacy → microphone.

Mountain Lion (10.8.x) Only

Some Mountain Lion users experience a problem with voice output, while input works fine (that is, you can hear but you can't speak). To fix this, open the voice preferences for your viewer (PreferencesSound & Media -> Voice in Firestorm). Click the device settings button and select “built-in microph” as the audio input device and click OK. Reopen Preferences and go back to the device settings button to ensure you're getting sound in on the mic.

linux

Every linux distro is different; and each distro may have more than one window manager to further complicate things. So tips can't be “absolute”; you will need to experiment and see what works for you. The following have been suggested by some as effective. But first….

In the Firestorm install directory, there's a text file (originally from LL) with tips on getting voice to work in linux. If you haven't read that, then you can try to see if it helps.

  • Make sure you have ALSA and/or FMODEX available. FMODEX is supplied with Firestorm, normally. If you look at Help → About Firestorm, you should see a line that resembles this:
Audio Driver Version: OpenAL, version 1.1 ALSOFT 1.11.753 / OpenAL Community / OpenAL Soft: PulseAudio Software
If that says “none” then you have no audio driver available to Firestorm and need to install one.
  • Edit the firestorm shell script and remove the #. That will force LL to use FMOD rather than ALSA. Some say this is how to get voice working.
#export LL_BAD_OPENAL_DRIVER=x
  • Some swear that the problem is PulseAudio, so you can try to remove that from your system. Be warned, however, that this could cause more problems than it solves. Make sure you remove only Pulse and not half the OS.
  • Be sure to have the correct devices select in Firestorm for voice:

Preferences → Sound & Media → Voice → Audio Device Settings (button) … input and output may not work if left at default; they may need to go to a specific device like “ALSA Capture on [device name]”.

Below are results for selected linux distros, based on input from Phoenix and Firestorm users. This will be updated as more information becomes available.

  • ubuntu 18.04 / linux Mint 19 64-bit + FS64. You may need to install a few extra libs:2)
sudo apt-get install libidn11:i386 libuuid1:i386 libstdc++6:i386

Note: If you experience the issue where voice connects and you are not able to hear audio from people speaking, you might need to install the libasound2-plugins:i386 package (for Debian based systems). The reason for this is that libasound_module_pcm_pulse.so is required on some systems. For non debian systems, install the relevant package that will add the 32 bit version of the library to your system (this might be alsa-plugins-pulseaudio.i686 on RHEL based systems (CentOS, Fedora))

  • ubuntu 16.04 64 bit + FS64: The following command installs a few 32-bit libs and voice works after. Maybe you need fewer 32-bit libs but that needs further investigation.
Apparently, arch requires these as well - or some of them - though the exact lib name may be different.
sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio:i386 libidn11:i386 libuuid1:i386 libstdc++6:i386
  • In the end you should have these libraries installed, in their 32 bit variant. The version numbers here are subject to change in later releases, but it should give you a good starting point on what to look for: ld-2.27.so libc-2.27.so libdl-2.27.so libgcc_s.so.1 libm-2.27.so libpthread-2.27.so libresolv-2.27.so librt-2.27.so libz.so.1.2.11 libXau.so.6.0.0 libasound.so.2.0.0 libcap.so.2.25 libdbus-1.so.3.19.6 libgcrypt.so.20.2.2 libgpg-error.so.0.24.2 libidn.so.12.6.0 liblz4.so.1.8.1 liblzma.so.5.2.3 libpulse.so.0.20.3 libstdc++.so.6.0.25 libsystemd.so.0.21.0 libuuid.so.1.3.0 libxcb.so.1.1.0 libpulsecommon-12.2.so
  • A new option is a debug setting, FSLinuxEnableWin32VoiceProxy, which when enabled will cause Firestorm to launch the Windows version of SLVoice.exe via WINE. To use this, you need to ensure that WINE is installed; install WINE with your package manager. An existing WINE profile/prefix is not needed, but will be used if present. Depending on your system, it may take several seconds before voice comes up.
    NOTES:
    * If you disable voice and then re-enable too quickly, WINE may not successfully restart and voice may fail to re-enable. If you get the warning that there was a problem connecting, you will need to relog before voice will re-enable. Thirty seconds between disable and enable should be enough.
    * There is a known related issue here
    * To speed up the initial loading of voice, use
    wine-preloader $HOME/path/to/firestorm/bin/win32/SLVoice.exe

    before launching Firestorm

Firestorm Debug Settings - Global

Global settings affect all accounts logging in with the viewer.

Please do not alter debug settings unless you know what you are doing. If the viewer “breaks”, you own both parts.

Some settings may have side effects, and if you forget what you changed, the only way to revert to the default behavior might be to manually clear all settings.

  • Allez à Preferences → Graphics → General → Maximum Complexity

  • More > More > Render > Normally– l'avatar sera affecté par votre slider de complexité (voir ci-dessus)
  • More > More > Never– l'avatar restera une silhouette sur votre écran
  • More > More > Fully– l'avatar s'affichera entièrement même si votre slider de complexité est bas

  • Allez à Preferences → General et cochez selon vos souhaits “Show Avatar Complexity” (Afficher la complexité de l'avatar), Only if too complex“ (seulement si trop complexe) et “Show own complexity” (afficher ma propre complexité)

  • Allez à Preferences → Notifications → Alerts, et faites passer “Warn me if my avatar complexity may be too high” dans la liste du bas “Never show”.

  • Allez à Avatar → Avatar Health → Show Avatar Complexity Information
  • * Rank : c'est la distance de l'avatar par rapport à votre caméra - le plus proche est 1, le suivant est 2…;
  • * VisTris : comptede manière récurrente le nombre de triangles de chaque attachement, au LOD actuellement affiché ;
  • * EstMaxTris : représente la somme du nombre estimé de triangles pour chacun des attachements de l'avatar ;

Référence pour ceux qui comprennent l'anglais :Your router could be screwing up your connection to Second Life

Full Clean Install of Firestorm

If you are attempting to update from a blocked version of Firestorm, refer to this page.

The following explains how to do a proper clean install - which is more than simply removing the viewer and reinstalling it. You may need to follow this procedure if you have problems.

Before You Begin

Step 1: Get the Installer

For the current release, go to the Downloads page.
For any previous supported version, go to the Older Downloads page.

If you save chat transcripts, they are by default saved in your per-account settings folder (named for your avatar). Before you delete that folder (below), you will need to identify the chat files and move them. See here for steps to relocate your chat transcripts. This only needs to be done once if you then backup your settings. But you must log in on each account (i.e., alts) to save that account's chat files.

As a just-in-case measure for any situation, and to make upgrading or downgrading your viewer much easier, make a backup of your settings. It's a good idea to make a backup right before upgrading, downgrading or otherwise wiping settings so that the backup is current (teleport history, contact sets, etc. can change dynamically). You must log in on each account (i.e., alts) in order to back up that account's settings.

Remove Your Current Install

Step 4: Delete Settings

REMINDER: If you want to save chat transcripts and or settings, make sure you do Steps 1 and 2 before deleting your settings.

Firestorm settings can become corrupt, particularly if you recently crashed; the files may not save completely, so important information can become “scrambled”. And when installing a different version of the viewer, using settings from the previously installed version may cause undesirable behavior in the viewer.

Here is how to remove the old settings:

Method 1: If you are able to launch Firestorm

  • Launch the viewer but do not log in.
  • Click the Viewer menu at the top, choose Preferences, then Network & Files, then Directories.
  • Click the Open Settings Folder button.
  • Close the viewer.
  • In the file window, navigate up one folder, to the Firestorm* folder. If you see a folder called user_settings and one or more named for your avatars, you're in the right place.
  • Select everything in that Firestorm folder and delete it.

*Note that the Firestorm folder name may differ slightly.

Note also that if you have both a 32-bit and 64-bit version installed, you will only be deleting settings for the version that you launched at the beginning of this step. You would have to repeat this step if you want to delete settings for the other version that's still installed.

Method 2: If you are *unable* to launch Firestorm

You will need to use a file manager (like Windows Explorer for Windows system, Dolphin, the Mac Finder, or some such) to locate the settings folder. In its default location, the folder is hidden on most OSs. To find it, you will need to show hidden folders. Refer to this page to locate your settings folders.

Step 5: Clear Cache

Clearing cache should only be done when there is a problem with the cache, or when there is a significant change in the viewer that requires it (such as a change to the KDU render code). The viewer will automatically clear cache in such cases, but manual clearing may be quicker.

When downgrading, you should always clear the cache.

If you have to clear cache in order to use the viewer version you are about to install, please see this page.

Step 6: Remove Application

For Windows

Ideally, use the Programs & Features Control Panel [Win7, Win8.1, Win10], or Add/Remove Programs Control Panel to remove the Firestorm application. If you have a Firestorm folder in your Start Menu, there may be an Uninstall link there (32-bit Firestorm only).

For Mac

Navigate to Applications and trash the Firestorm App.

For linux

The Firestorm install directory will be wherever you extracted the download archive. Typically this will be in your home directory somewhere, such as ~/Phoenix-Firestorm_*. Delete this directory and everything inside it.

If you used the install script as root, look in your /opt directory. You will need to su root or sudo rm to delete the firestorm directory there.

Install the New Version

Step 7: Install Firestorm

Having done all those steps, you may now install Firestorm. Installing Firestorm is done in pretty much the same way as any other application on your computer.

For Windows

Run the downloaded installer.
The 32-bit installer will offer you the chance to change the destination directory.
The 64-bit installer shows the destination when you click the Options button.
The installer will create a shortcut icon on the desktop.

Note: Both installers offer you an option to start the viewer when it's done, and you should choose No.
Choosing Yes tends to cause problems for some people, especially if they restore during that session.
The shortcut is the preferred way to launch the viewer.

For Mac

Find the .dmg file you just downloaded and double-click it to mount it.
Then drag the Firestorm app icon into your Applications folder.
More detailed instructions can be found here

For linux

Extract the downloaded tar.bz2 or tar.xz into any directory and run the firestorm script inside that directory to launch it. You can optionally install by running the install script inside that directory. And you can optionally create a desktop launcher. Refer to the README files for more information.
If you are installing on a 64-bit Linux system, you will need to install some 32-bit libraries. Refer to this page for guidance on required compatibility libraries.
If you use the Nautilus File Manager and double clicking the firestorm launch script opens the script in an editor, you will need to modify how Nautilus handles scripts.

Flash Player

Go to Adobe Flash Player, select your operating system, then select the appropriate flash player.

Step 8: Log in

Once you have the viewer installed or reinstalled, you will want to make sure the viewer is operating correctly:

  • Log back into SL, to a quiet region (try Hippo Hollow, Aich or Hatton). Don't change any settings.
  • Test any functions that didn't work for you in the previous version that had been reported fixed.
  • If downgrading, test any functions that failed in the newer version.
  • If you needed to clear cache in Step 5 above, open your Inventory and wait for it to fully populate.

Step 9: Restore Settings

At this point, if the viewer is performing as it should, you can restore your settings and again relog. You must log in on each account (i.e., alts) to restore that account's settings.

Log back in to SL once again and confirm that the viewer is still performing as it should; then you can adjust any new or changed settings and then back those up.

Note that some settings are not restored, such as graphics. This is because the graphics settings could be incorrect and may cause problems.

Firestorm 32-bit
Windows 7, 8.1 and 10SL: C:\Users\[NOM D'UTILISATEUR]\AppData\Local\Firestorm (ou: %localappdata%\Firestorm)
OpenSIM: C:\Users\[NOM D'UTILISATEUR]\AppData\Local\FirestormOS (ou: %localappdata%\FirestormOS)
Mac~/Library/Caches/Firestorm 1)
Linux~/.firestorm/cache
Firestorm 64-bit
Windows 7, 8.1 and 10SL: C:\Users\[NOM D'UTILISATEUR]\AppData\Local\Firestorm_x64 (ou: %localappdata%\Firestorm_x64)
OpenSIM: C:\Users\[NOM D'UTILISATEUR]\AppData\Local\FirestormOS_x64 (ou: %localappdata%\FirestormOS_x64)
MacSL: ~/Library/Caches/Firestorm_x64
OpenSIM: ~/Library/Caches/FirestormOS_x64
Linux~/.firestorm_x64/cache

Supprimez Votre Installation Actuelle

Etape 4.

Install the New Version

Etape 6. Installer Firestorm

Getting Help with Firestorm Viewer

If you have a problem using Firestorm, there are a number of ways in which you can get help. It is strongly recommended that you try the following, in order.

Online Documentation

The viewer has extensive online documentation, explaining the features and how to use them. If there is some feature which you do not know how to use, then please consult the documentation.

Things Not Working Correctly

If you have problems with things not working as they should, or are crashing a lot, or being disconnected, etc, then the best place to go is the troubleshooting section of our online wiki.

Getting Help In-World

If the above do not provide a solution for you, or you need urgent help, then the best way is to contact one of our several in-world Firestorm support groups. Please view our tips, rules, and guidelines for our help groups here.

Please note, group chat lag can be a serious issue. So when you go to a support group for help, please bear in mind the following:

  • Please indicate what viewer you are using, and what operating system you are using (Windows, OSX, linux) and which version.
Recent versions of Firestorm have a checkbox in the English support group chat window: Specify version; please enable this to make it easier for the support team to assist you.
  • Your question may not show up for some time; allow time for it to post, and therefore time for people to see it and respond. Posting over and over is not helpful.
  • Chat lag frequently results in posts appearing out of order, so rather than post multiple short lines, try to express your issue all on one line, as concisely and clearly as possible.
  • If your question has an answer on the wiki, you will very likely be pointed to the relevant page; the solution there will be far more detailed than what help can be given in the group.
  • Please remember that support staff are volunteers, and help out on their own time, without pay. They may not be able to help, but they do try. Be respectful.
  • Support groups (except where noted) are PG, so please mind your language. While off-topic chat is allowed, it must give way to support issues. No advertising, no hating, no flaming, no drama; no spamming, advertising or begging.

In-World Classes

We hold in-world classes explaining how to use Firestorm, what the preferences and menus mean, and so on. A great way to learn how to use the viewer, with an opportunity to ask questions as well.

The class schedule is posted here.

Filing a Support Ticket or Bug Report

If you believe you have found a bug - or if you were unable to get help from the wiki or in a support group - then please file a report via our JIRA (bug tracker). In order to best help, please supply basic information.

Firestorm-Based Viewers

The Firestorm Support Team only provides support for the latest official release of Firestorm Viewer. Earlier versions, even those released by the Firestorm team, are subject to limited or no support.

CtrlAltStudio Viewer

CtrlAltStudio Viewer (CAS) is a third-party viewer that is substantially based on but unrelated to Firestorm. At present, its website tells users:

  • If the problem you’re having or suggestion for improvement is not for one of the CtrlAltStudio Viewer specific features (see the list here), please check whether it’s also a problem with or suggestion for the Firestorm viewer; if it is then direct your enquiry to them.

This is not to be interpreted to mean that users should seek help with CAS problems from the Firestorm Support Team. It concerns the development of the viewer, rather than support, which means the appropriate source for such information is the JIRA, where viewer bug reports and feature requests are handled.

Steps for addressing your CAS problem:

  • Search the JIRA to see if your issue has been reported and is being addressed as a bug. If it is, comment on and/or follow this JIRA (you’ll need a JIRA account to do either); if there are workarounds, they are likely discussed in the comments. If there aren’t, there is nothing further you can do until the bug is fixed. Note that you must be have tested your issue on a current version of Firestorm if you are commenting on an open issue.
  • Note that because CAS releases may not be current to Firestorm releases, a bug might already have been fixed, and the fix could be available on the latest version of Firestorm. If/when this is the case, CAS will not have the fix until its developer(s) update it.
  • If your bug has not been reported yet, download the current official version of Firestorm to test for the presence of the bug and then file a JIRA of your own. You must test your issue on the current official version of Firestorm before doing so. Bugs that are reported without current Firestorm system information will be closed.

Self-Compiled Versions of Firestorm

Even if the version of Firestorm you are running is the same as the current official version, we cannot provide support for it in our support groups if you built it on your own system. There might be subtle differences in build environments that generate unexpected results. Download the latest official version and test there before reporting your bug or seeking support.

Earlier Versions of Firestorm

Only the most recent official release of the viewer is supported. Additional previous versions continue to be available (usually the two most recent builds but sometimes one or two more) under the assumption that if they work for you, there is no need to force an update. If problems develop, however, you must update to the most recent version to receive assistance.

Support for Other (Non-Bug) Issues

If you know or suspect that your problem is not a viewer bug:

  • Begin your troubleshooting by downloading the latest version of Firestorm to see if the issue exists there, as well.
  • Use the troubleshooting section of the Firestorm wiki to search for solutions to your problem.
  • If you cannot find an adequate solution to your problem, you can join one of the Firestorm support groups to ask for help, but you must be using or have tested on the most recent official release of Firestorm to receive help.

  • Votre fournisseur d'accès internet étrangle le débit ou bloque le service voix;
  • Échec du service Vivox;
  • Problèmes de voix dans la région où vous vous trouvez;
  • Débit de la voix étranglé par un réglage de bande passante mal ajusté - voir les instructions de réglages ici;
  • Le matériel audio (micro, casque, est mal configuré dans les options de votre système d'exploitation;
  • Le matériel audio est mal configuré dans le viewer;
  • Votre matériel audio est en cours d'utilisation dans une autre application (Skype, MSN, au autre);

Audio Driver Version: OpenAL, version 1.1 ALSOFT 1.11.753 / OpenAL Community / OpenAL Soft: PulseAudio Software

sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio:i386 libidn11:i386 libuuid1:i386 libstdc++6:i386

If you have DNS errors trying to log in, or simply get disconnected during or immediately on log in, try flushing your DNS cache; how to do that is explained here for Windows, Linux, and Mac.

If this doesn't help, then try setting your DNS to Google: Google Public DNS

Should using Google as a DNS not work for you then see here for alternate servers, or grab DNS Bench to help you locate one.

See below for other causes which are specific to your operating system.

Windows

DNS errors might be caused by anti-virus software; see this page for more on that.

Mac

Various Troublesome Behavior

This is a collection of symptoms, all or some of which you may be experiencing together. If you have them on Firestorm, then you will experience them on other V3 viewers (like the official LL viewer) but not on V1 viewers (like Phoenix). The fix is very easy but not especially intuitive.

Possible symptoms:

  • Crashing or getting logged out on all or most teleports;
  • Friends list and groups list not loading;
  • Inability to view any mesh;
  • Inability to view “About Land”;
  • Inability to open notecards;
  • SLVoice does not connect.

How to fix this:

  • On your Mac, open System Preferences and go to Network > Advanced > DNS
  • Hit the plus button (+) and type in the numbers 8.8.8.8.
  • Hit the plus button (+) and type in the numbers 8.8.4.4.
    • If you live in Asia or Australia, you will need to use the following numbers instead of those just listed: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220. Even those in other parts of the world might find this pair to work better, so if you complete the process and find no change, repeat it with this set.
  • Close the System Preferences and restart your viewer.

What this does:

  • This process adds GoogleDNS and/or OpenDNS to the DNS servers your Mac attempts to use. There is no need to delete the numbers already there; if the system cannot work with them, then it will go down the list until it finds one it can.
  • The issue is related to Linden Lab JIRAVWR-26759. Any additional information we know about it is on that JIRA.
  • If you would like to read about either of these DNSes before adding them to your system, you can visit their pages here for Google or or here for OpenDNS. You may have another set you would prefer to try besides these two, but as you can see on the Linden Lab JIRA, the changes in DNS are the only known fixes for this set of problems.

Acknowledgement to Queen Kellee for the way the step-by-step instructions were written.

"DNS Could Not Resolve the Host Name"

If you use Hands Off! security software, try uninstalling it. So far, the evidence that this software may be related to this problem is anecdotal, but it is something to try.

Certain proxy redirectors external to the viewer can cause “DNS Could Not Resolve the Host Name” failure at login.
ProxyCap proxy redirector is known to cause this.

Texte and Interface Trop Petits

  (32-bit version)
"C:\Program Files\Firestorm-Release\Firestorm-Release.exe" --set InstallLanguage en --noprobe

  (64-bit version)
  "C:\Program Files\Firestorm-Releasex64\Firestorm-bin.exe" --noprobe

Erreur Failed to Decode Login Credentials

Issues with the Firestorm LSL Bridge

NOTE: If you are on Firestorm 4.4.2, the bridge will not work, unfortunately.
NOTE: The Firestorm bridge will not be created if you are on a parcel which has scripts disabled. If this is your case, please find a parcel where scripts are enabled for you and try to create it manually:
top menu bar, Avatar → Avatar Health → Recreate LSL Bridge.

There are some known issues with the Firestorm bridge:

Script Info and Movelock not working

  • Try to following steps in order as a workaround until the issue is resolved/fixed:
    • In your Inventory, open #Firestorm folder and #LSL Bridge subfolder
    • Right click #Firestorm LSL Bridge v2.21 and select Edit
    • Select the Content tab
    • Right click #Firestorm LSL Bridge v2.21 and select Open
    • Set the script to Running. Close the script and edit/build window, and relog.
    • Check if Script Info and/or Movelock is now available.

Other

  • If you log in and find yourself wearing a rock, detach it from yourself. To do this:
    • Go to Preferences→ Firestorm → Extras and disable the bridge
    • open top menu → Advanced → Debug Settings, and type in: ProtectBridgeFolder; set to FALSE, close the Debug Settings window.
    • open the #Firestorm folder in your inventory, and in that, the #LSL Bridge folder
    • detach the #Firestorm LSL Bridge, then delete it
    • search your inventory for any other copies of the bridge and delete them all, including any links to bridges
    • empty your trash
    • relog
    • re-enable ProtectBridgeFolder
    • re-enable the bridge
    • generate a new one bridge: use the top menu bar, go to Avatar → Avatar Health → Recreate LSL Bridge.
  • If you have the bridge recreating on each log in or each TP, this is likely related to your connection. So, please make sure your bandwidth is set correctly, per this page - and please follow the steps exactly.
If you need to get rid of excess bridges that may have accumulated due to this frequent recreation, proceed as above.
  • If you find that your hair suddenly appears to be attached to a place other than your head, even after a relog, then proceed as described above.
  • Attempting to wear the bridge manually while it is being created can “break” it. When bridge creation begins, you will see a message in local chat; when creation is complete, you will see another message. During this period, do not attempt to do anything with the bridge; allow it to finish.
  • If you use another viewer after Firestorm, the Firestorm bridge will display a message to local chat. It should, however, recognize that a different viewer is being used, and not repeat this message again. Should it happen that the message repeats, simply detach the bridge while in the other viewer.
  • If you are wearing a bridge from an older version of Firestorm, the bridge will (correctly) detach but a new one will not be made. To have a new one generated, use the top menu bar, go to Avatar → Avatar Health → Recreate LSL Bridge. This will “clean up” any old bridges and make a new one.
  • If the bridge is persistently unable to finish recreating itself, even on script-enabled land, and you have already relogged and tried Avatar → Avatar Health → Recreate LSL Bridge several times, try clearing your inventory cache in Avatar → Preferences → Network & Files → Directories; click the “Clear Inventory Cache” button there and relog.
