Creating a Unique Cache Folder for Phoenix

Quite often frequent crashing in Pheonix is caused by cache problems. Often this can be solved by setting a unique cache location.

To do so, go to Preferences → Network, and find the box that is labeled “Disk Cache Location.” Next to the box, you will see a button labeled “Set.” Press this. You will then need to decide where to put your new cache:

  • Windows: the best place for the new folder is in the same location as the default, the SecondLife folder; it should be given a unique name, for example Phoenix Cache. Log out of SL once it has been set.
  • linux/Mac: remember the location, then log out of SL. Locate the cache folder you saw and delete it. Then create a new one, in the same location or where you like, and name it something you will remember, like, Phoenix Cache. Run Phoenix again but before logging in, bring up Preferences → Network again, click the Disk Cache Location Set button and locate the new folder you created.

You will now need to repopulate your inventory:

  • Log back into SL, to a quiet region (try aich or hatton). On your inventory window, click “Recent Items”.
  • Wait for your inventory to repopulate fully. The process may be sped up by typing random letters into the search bar.
  • While inventory repopulates, do not teleport anywhere, and do not attempt to access anything in your inventory. Talk to people or surf the web.
  • Watch as it repopulates. as long as you can see (Fetched…) at the top of the inventory window, it is still loading.
  • Once inventory has repopulated, log out of SL once more, then log back in.

Please note: This will not fix every instance of frequent crashing. For more tips on crashes and their causes, see here.

Logging in with One Word Account Names

With the advent of Display Names, comes also one word account or user names. If you have such an account, then to log into SL using Phoenix:

  • First, be sure you have activated your account; you will have received an email with instructions on how to do so.
  • enter your username in the First Name field.
  • enter Resident (in lowercase, but capital R) in the Last Name field.

For example, if your username is thejoesmith:
First Name: thejoesmith
Last Name: Resident

More information is on the SL wiki.

What are Outfit Links?

Outfit links (inventory links), gives you the ability to create complete outfits with hair, skin, shape, shoes, clothing etc without having to copy items into a folder. This is especially useful when you have a pair of shoes for example that are no copy.

So for example, I have a pair of shoes that look great with a few different outfits I like to wear, but the shoes are no copy. So I have to wear my outfit, then dig through my inventory to find the shoes. With Inventory links I can create an entire outfit, or several outfit combination's without having to move/copy or find my inventory items.

Where are the links saved?

In your inventory you will see a folder called “My Outfits”. In this folder you will first see a bunch of outfit links to newbie avatars. You can choose to keep or delete these if you want. When you create an outfit using inventory links, it gets created in this folder.

How do I create Outfit Links?

Find an outfit you like, including (or not) shoes, huds, anything you want to wear with this outfit.
- Go into appearance
- At the bottom right is a button called “Make Outfit”, click this.
- In the new window that opens you will see listed and checked by default, everything you are wearing. This includes attachments, clothing layers, huds, hair, shape, skin, eyes… Everything. If you uncheck something, it will not be included in the outfit folder.
- Make sure you have “Use Viewer 2 outfit folders” checked at the bottom left.
- Give your outfit a name under “Outfit Name”
- Click Save.

How do I find my new outfit?

Now if you go to your inventory and open the “My outfits” folder, you will see everything that was check marked, in the way of links. This means that you can right click on your outfit folder, and choose “Wear” or “Replace Outfit” and you will automatically wear everything in that folder.

What happens if I want to delete inventory linked items?

You can safely delete inventory linked outfits or items in the My Outfits folder. It will not delete the actual inventory items that they link too.

We also have a video tutorial on inventory links.

Was sind Outfit Links ?

In deinem Inventar wirst du einen Ordner namens “My Outfits” finden.

  • Klick Speichern.

Wo finde ich mein neues Outfit ?

In deinem Inventar im “My Outfits” Ordner findest du dein neuen Outfit Ordner, welcher Verknüpfungen auf alles was du vorhin ausgewählt hast enthält.

Removing Stored Passwords

If you wish to clear all your saved accounts/passwords from Phoenix:

  • Locate the Phoenix settings folder (it may be hidden):
    • Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[YOUR USERNAME]\Application Data\SecondLife
    • Windows Vista: C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SecondLife
    • Windows 7: C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SecondLife
    • Mac: /Users/[YOUR USERNAME]/Library/Application Support/SecondLife
    • linux: ~/.secondlife
  • In this folder, find the folder called: user_settings
  • in that folder, locate the file: saved_logins_phoenix.xml
  • open this file using a text editor
  • delete the entire contents of the file, then save it; close the text editor
  • now locate the file called passwords.dat, in the same folder, and delete it.

NOTE: This does NOT delete your SecondLife account. It merely removes the account name/password information from your hard drive.

Preventing User Name and Password Autocomplete

If you also want to prevent your user name and password from being filled in automatically when you start Phoenix - and unchecking “Remember Avatar Name” doesn't seem to work, then in addition to the above, do this:

  • mark the file as read only: right click it, select Properties, then mark Read Only.

Name Tag color Won't Change

NOTE If the tag color drop-down does not open, or shows no color list, then please relog; this is a sign of a communication failure with the servers.

If you wish to change your name tag color from the default red, to something else, then do these steps:

Version 373 and Earlier

  • Preferences → Shields → Phoenix Tag color: select the color you want from the drop-down
  • Enable Display Client Tags
  • Enable Color Name Tags
  • Preferences → Phoenix → TP/Login → Make name tags of the same client to be the same color: uncheck.

Version 725 and Later

  • Preferences → Tags → Phoenix Tag color: select the color you want from the drop-down
  • Enable Display Client Tags
  • Enable Color Name Tags
  • Preferences → Phoenix → Tags → Make name tags of the same client to be the same color: uncheck.
  • To see the color yourself, enable Show your own color.

A relog may be needed after doing the above.

Why Does Teleport Fail so Much?

Teleport can fail in several ways:

  • you simply don't go anywhere but remain where you were
  • you get logged out
  • you crash out

The first of these cases may often be due to simple things like the region you are trying to get to is full, or you have no access to it, or it has gone down. Try again after a few minutes.

Also, please note that the recent introduction of “teleport threading”, an attempt to mitigate the effects of mono memory leak, have lead to an increase in TP failures, often resulting in your being logged out of SL altogether.

One very frequent cause of TP fail, which fits the first two scenarios, is that you are wearing too many scripted prims. You can check this: right click your avatar (not something you are wearing, but your skin, so to speak), and select S.Count. Eventually, you will be given a total script count.

If you are using a Phoenix Viewer version prior to 818, note that the count does NOT include any HUDs you might have attached.

If the total is 350 or more, then you need to reduce the total number. You should try to aim to get the number under 100. 1)

Please see below for more on why this matters - and ARC does not.2)

If TP fails even with scripts radically reduced, then IF you are using Norton firewall, you should try disabling it and seeing if that improves things. Norton products have been known to severely impair various SL functions, including teleports and textue rezzing.

If you don't use Norton but some other firewall, then try turning it off briefly and seeing it that improves things.

Also, you should check your network performance. Bring up the SIM stats floater with Shift-Ctrl-1 and check packet loss, which is very near the top. If this is more than a few percent, that is a likely cause for TP failure. You may have a poor connection to your ISP, or it might be that the SIM you are on is overloaded and responding poorly.

Having your bandwidth set too high is another frequent cause of TP failure. Go to Preferences → Network and set bandwidth to 300, and see if that improves things. If it does, you can increase, up to a maximum of 1500. Please refer to this page for information on determining your optimum bandwidth setting.

Another possible cause is that you have teleport screens disabled. For some, this can cause frequent crashes. So try turning them back on: Preferences → Phoenix → TP/Login → Disable Teleport Screens … make sure it is NOT checked.

Also, please note that the recent introduction of “teleport threading”, an attempt to mitigate the effects of mono memory leak, have lead to an increase in TP failures, often resulting in your being logged out of SL altogether.

In summary: TP failures are most often caused by too many worn scripts. Secondary causes are network issues, SIM issues or other installed software. TP fail is rarely, if ever, due to the viewer you are using. Also note that worn prims do not cause TP failure in and of themselves; scripted prims do - this is a significant distinction.

1) Most of the scripts in worn attachments are generally old-style resizers, which use one script per prim. In 200-prim hair, that is 200+ scripts! One solution is to turn them off, which you can do by editing the hair, and then selecting Tools → Set Scripts to Not Running in Selection.

This is a reasonable, but not ideal, solution. It allows you to turn the scripts back on if you need to resize at some future date. However, stopped scripts still have a negative impact on the region you are in, a significant one. So the best solution is to remove the scripts entirely. If the item (hair) is copyable, then make a backup copy first. Then as before, edit the hair, and select Tools → Remove Scripts from Selection.

You should repeat this for all scripted clothing attachments you are wearing. After hair, the “worst culpit” is shoes. Naturally, you do NOT want to stop or remove scripts from HUDs or other items that perform useful functions, like AOs, Mystitool, combat HUDs, etc.

NOTE: neither of the above is possible if the hair, shoes are no mod. If this the case, then you might request that the maker of the item provide a script removal function. Or better yet, to update the item to use new-style resizers, which are a single script for the entire object - and furthermore, available for free from the scripting wiki.

2)IMPORTANT:ARC is totally unrelated to script count. Low ARC does not mean your script count is low. ARC (Avatar Rendering Cost) is an indication of how much work your computer has to do to draw an avatar, no more. The association between ARC and scripts is a myth, and totally false. Also, high ARC does not interfere with TP; that too is a myth.

The User Interface Goes Transparent

If your user interface (menu bar, IM window, inventory window, etc) goes totally or partly transparent, then here are things to try which may solve that:

  • Go to Advanced → Rendering → Features and make sure UI is enabled.
  • Go to Advanced (Ctrl-Alt-D shows this menu if it isn't visible) → UI → Show color under cursor, and make sure it is not checked. Relog will be necessary if this was checked.
  • If that fails, go to Preferences → Phoenix → Page 2 → Advanced Graphics and disable Full Gamma / Hardcoded 2
  • If you use more than one monitor, make sure you run Phoenix on the primary; some video cards do not have full OpenGL support for secondary monitors.

Basic Trouble Shooting

We all have problems occasionally in SL, and need to get them “fixed” so we can enjoy ourselves. This is not always an easy thing to do and requires some troubleshooting. Troubleshooting is not always simple, in fact most times it is a slow process as you eliminate one possibility after another until you find the root of the problem.

First thing to try in almost every case is a relog, you may be surprised at how many problems are solved this way. Next is to try a different region/SIM. Try a “known” good SIM, water SIMs are generally a good bet (try aich or hatton), TP to one and relog there if you still have the problem when you get there.

If you still have the issue, reboot the computer and try again.

Assuming that you still have the problem after following the above steps we suggest looking at the Support section of our Wiki.

The “clear your cache” advice is something we resort to ONLY if the problem appears to be texture related. A full cache is almost always better than an empty one. Clearing Inventory cache when you have inventory loading issues can be helpful. There are occasions when you will not want to clear inventory cache, just your texture cache. This can only be done manually. There are also times when you may need to clear cache manually, do this by opening the cache and deleting the files in that folder. If you want to manually clear cache without effecting inventory cache, avoid deleting any files ending with .inv.gz as files ending in .inv.gz are inventory cache files.

Things to look for when you have issues

In the viewer itself

Cumulative packet loss, found in the Help menu → About Phoenix Viewer - on the bottom line of the top section It looks like “Packets Lost: 760/302154 (0.3%)” High packet loss is a very good indicator that you are having network issues, data is constantly being sent from the viewer to the server and vice versa. This data is called Packets. High packet loss is a very good indicator that you are having network issues and reflects the percentage of data that is failing to be delivered to either you or the simulator.

The Statistics Bar (Ctrl-Shift-1, or View → Statistics Bar) is another good troubleshooting tool. Things to look at here are:

  • Under Basic
    • FPS” Frames per second: The higher the number here the better although most people will not notice any real difference over 20.
    • “Packet Loss”: This shows the realtime packet loss. Lower is better. If it stays high for a long period of time you will experience lower performance.
    • “Ping Sim”: The lower the number the better. This is the time it takes for information to travel between you and the server, lower is better. NOTE: your RL location will make a difference here people further away from the servers will have higher ping times. Generally speaking anything over 300 can be a problem.
  • Under Simulator
    • Time Dilation: The physics simulation rate relative to realtime. 1.0 means that the simulator is running at full speed; 0.5 means that physics are running at half-speed.
    • SimFPS: The simulator frame rate. This should now always be the same as the physics frame rate – 45.0 when things are running well.
    • Physics FPS: The frame rate at which the physics engine is running. This should normally be at or near 45.0.
    • Pending Downloads: Number of asset downloads to the simulator that are pending. If this is greater than 1, this means that you may see delays in viewing notecards or scripts, and rezzing objects.
    • Pending Uploads: Number of current uploads of asset data pending. If this number is non-zero, this means that there may be performance issues when attempting to teleport.

More information on the statistics bar is available at the Second Life Wiki.

On your computer

The task manager (Windows) can show you what processes are active on your PC as well as the memory use.

There are some applications out there that can help you with troubleshooting as well. Note that you need varying degrees of technical knowledge to use them. Personally, I use one called Net Limiter 2 to monitor bandwidth and what is using it. There is also LogViewer Pro, which will allow you to look at viewer logs. Wireshark is another program that can help you diagnose network issues.

Special Note: We have had several users that were having issues that despite our best efforts we could not help, that reformatted their computers (Windows and MAC) and started off with a fresh install of their OS and then found that Phoenix ran fine. Coincidence? Consider that MOST people with infected PCs do not know that they are, and that an infected PC will have issues.

32% of the computers with AV protection are infected (Source.)

Persistent Typing Animation

If your avatar will not stop typing despite having “Play typing animation when chatting” unchecked in Edit → Preferences → Text Chat, disable typing override in your AO, if that option is available. If that does not work, please do the following:

  • Check with the creator of your AO for any updates since the rollout of LL server 1.42 (the new servers included a change in how lsl manages the typing state of an avatar). Absent such an update, please continue through these steps
  • Remove your AO. Rez it to the ground (unless your AO has different directions for add/remove animations)
  • Physically remove the actual typing animations from your AO
  • Remove any references to typing animations on the notecard in your AO (assuming your AO has a notecard that includes what animations it is to use)
  • Reset the scripts
  • Take the AO back into your inventory
  • Go to Advanced, Debug, Playtypinganim, and set to TRUE, then back to FALSE
  • Relog and reattach your AO

Updating Phoenix 1.6.0.1600 for Direct Delivery

Please refer to our Direct Delivery FAQ for general information on what Direct Delivery is, as well as information on how it affects Firestorm.

"Broken" Received Items

Due to an error on our part when preparing the previous phoenix versions 1591 and 1600 we missed an icon for the Direct Delivery “Received Items” inventory folder. If you are on Phoenix 1591 or 1600, when LL turns on this feature your inventory will look like the picture shown here.

The large grey area is what you will see if the fix below is not applied.

Earlier versions of Phoenix should be fine, and users of Phoenix 1.6.1.1691 and later are also fine, and need do nothing.

In order to fix this, you will need to download a file: inv_folder_inbox.tga.zip

Extract this file to: [Phoenix install folder]\skins\default\textures - then relog.

NOTE Failure to apply this fix will not result in inventory loss or breakage. The effect is purely visual, as shown to the right.

The image below shows what the inventory window looks like with the icon dropped in.

V2 Multi Attachment System FAQ

Q: Why did Phoenix move to the multi attachment system?
A: In the past, Phoenix used an unofficial modification to one of the viewer's XML files to provide additional attachment points. This modification worked fine for all viewers that used the same altered XML file, but residents with other viewers, such as Linden Lab's original viewer, saw these additional attachment points randomly floating around the avatar, or not at all. The new Viewer 2 multi attachment system is the official Linden Lab way of attaching multiple items to a single attachment point. To stay compatible with future releases of the Second Life system, Phoenix has adopted this new functionality.

Q: How is the multi attach system different from the old way Phoenix used?
A: Phoenix does no longer provide duplicated attachment points (like pelvis 2). Instead, you will see a new context menu item in your inventory that allows you to add attachments to a point, rather than just wear and replace it. So, if you want to wear a belt and a tail on the Pelvis, you can attach the belt, then right click on the tail and select “Add”.

Q: How many attachments can I wear on one spot?
A: You can wear a maximum of 38 attachment points overall. Within this, you can put as many as you like on any attachment point at the same time.

Q: Does this feature also let me wear multiple clothing layers?
A: No, multiple clothing layers won't be implemented until the release of Firestorm.

Q: How will this new system affect me?
A: That depends on your avatar. If you didn't use any multiple attachments before, you won't see any difference at first. If you used the deprecated Phoenix attachment points, those attachments will be detached, and you will have to reattach them the first time you log in with a multi attachment enabled Phoenix version.

Q: Will this have an effect on RLV?
A: Most of the current RLV implementation will behave the same as before. To work with the new system, the RLV specification has been extended and does now contain additional commands to use with multi attachments.

Q: Will everyone see my attachments correctly?
A: Everyone using a viewer that implements the V2 multi attachment standard will see your attachments correctly. Viewers that don't offer this functionality yet will only display one of the items you attached to the respective spot. For backwards compatibility, Phoenix will continue to display attachments on the deprecated Phoenix attachment slots correctly, until the new, official method has become widely used.

Q: Do other Third Party Viewers have this system?
A: Yes. A number of other third party viewers already implemented this functionality, e.g. Imprudence, Kirsten's and Cool Viewer.

Q: Who wrote the code for the Multi attachment system?

Objects on Screen Disappear

If you find that objects around you are suddenly disappearing, try the following, one at a time until you're fixed:

  • change your active group tag, then cam far out from yourself till you vanish, then restore your cam view with Esc.
  • [Phoenix 1185 and earlier only] at the bottom right hand corner of the screen, above the Inventory button, there is an up arrow; click that to open QuickPrefs, and check the value of Max Node2). On Phoenix versions prior to 1600, this defaults to 8192 and should not be set lower; you can raise it if needed, up to 15360.
On 1600 and later, this value has been removed from the Quick Prefs panel; the default is 65536 and should not be changed.
  • Advanced → Rendering → Object-Object Occlusion … disable

If this too doesn't solve the problem - are all the objects textures with partly transparent textures (eg leaves)? If so, this may be due to shadows. If you have shadows enabled, then see this page.

2)
Max Node specifies how much memory is used to render new on-screen objects. Set too low, older objects will simply “vanish” so that new ones may be rendered.

Why am I so Laggy?

And that is indeed a million dollar question! Lag is pervasive in SL, and there is no such thing as a “lag free SIM” - except one that is completely empty.

Before this can be answered, it is first vital to understand what lag is exactly, so please refer to this page for an explanation of the 3 forms of lag.

If you find yourself being badly lagged, there are things you can do to reduce the effects of two of the three types: client and network. You can only reduce server side lag if you own or rent the parcel or region being affected by it.

Reducing Client Side Lag

This is the most common of lag you will experience in SL. And you can do a great deal about it, without requiring that others do anything, and all of it simply entails reducing your graphics settings. Try these one at a time; sometimes just one or two will be enough to make things significantly better. Also, they are not given in order: in different situations, some will be preferable solutions than others.

  • set your graphics to Low: Preferences → Graphics → Quality & Performance
  • ensure that ansitropic filtering and anti-aliasing are both disabled: Preferences → Graphics → Hardware Options
  • reduce your draw distance;
  • turn on avatar imposters (this makes drawing of distant avatars much faster);
  • disable atmospheric shaders (which serves to drastically reduce how much your computer has to render, as the sky alone is very graphics-intensive);
  • if need be, inhibit the rendering of other avatars: Advanced → Rendering → Types → Character
  • alternately, you can derender avatars one by one, by right clicking on them and selecting Derender
  • you can also derender objects, the same way
  • if there are many particle effects around you, turn particles off: View → Hide Particles
  • disable animated textures: Preferences → Phoenix → Page 2 → Adv. Graphics → Animate Textures

These things will reduce the “quality” of your SL experience but they may be required if you find that your movement is badly impaired by client side lag.

If you own or rent a home - or a public venue, there are things you can do to reduce client lag for yourself and others without overly sacrificing the “feel” of the location. For example:

  • use small textures on all structures, 512×512 or smaller
  • avoid using prims that change textures if possible; if you need them, again, try to keep the textures small
  • avoid using textures with alpha channels if none are needed (a solid brick wall texture doesn't need an alpha channel)
  • make enclosed spaces that do not give too large a view of the exterior, especially the sky
  • use particles and animated textures sparingly.

Reducing Network Lag

Another common cause of lag is your network connection. You may even have a high speed connection but if you have set your bandwidth too low or too high in Phoenix, you will be causing lag for yourself.

Determining the optimal value for bandwidth in Phoenix is explained on on this page.

Other things that are known to affect connection speeds are firewalls and anti-virus software. So if you still experience network-related lag, you can try disabling these, temporarily, and seeing if things improve. If they do, then you may want to consider replacing firewall and/or anti-virus software.

Reducing Server Lag

If you own or rent a parcel or region, then there are many things you can do to help reduce server lag. Here is a partial, incomplete list:

  • remove all unnecessary scripts
  • remove all items that rez temporary objects (temp rez creates a lot of lag on a SIM)
  • if you host events, consider providing seating for avatars and ask them to make use of it
  • similarly, for events, request that attendees detach scripted attachments before they arrive (NOTE: asking people to reduce their Avatar Render Weight (formerly ARC, Avatar Render Cost) does not alleviate server lag in a noticeable way).
  • for large parcels, provide easy ways for people to teleport about, saving them walking (avatars moving creates physics lag)

Voice Issues

Please note: Viewers play a minor part in voice functionality. The bulk of voice support is given by the external application called SLVoice, which is made by the SL voice provider, Vivox. Voice failures are almost always due to one of the following reasons:

  • Your ISP is throttling or blocking the voice service;
  • failure of the Vivox service;
  • voice issues on the region you are on;
  • voice being throttled by bandwidth set incorrectly;
  • voice hardware (mic, headset) not configured correctly in your operating system settings;
  • voice hardware not configured correctly in the viewer;
  • another application has your voice hardware in use (example, Skype)
  • your anti virus software has “mangled” the voice application; see here.

You can test voice by going to Voice Echo Canyon. If voice is working correctly for you, anything you say there will be echoed back to you.

Voice Worked Fine but Suddenly Doesn't Work

Chances are good that the problem lies with the SL servers or the voice provider, Vivox. Still, there are things you can try:

  • shut down all applications that use, or can use, voice - like Skype, etc. Then relog.
  • What sometimes helps to get voice working is disabling voice in Preferences → Voice, hitting apply, waiting a minute and then enabling voice and hitting apply. When these methods fail (assuming voice usually works for you) it is usually the Vivox voice servers that are the problem.
  • Try going to another region to see if voice works there. If so, then the issue is the region you were in before. Was voice disabled there? If not, a region restart might solve the problem.
  • Try a relog, or even a reboot of the computer.
  • Sometimes device settings can reset, so check in Preferences → Voice → Device Settings, to be sure that the input and output are set correctly.

Never Been Able to Get Voice to Work

  • Does your headset/microphone work outside of SL? ie when using Skype, Yahoo or MSN
  • Does your headset/microphone work in Preferences → Voice Chat → Device Settings?
  • Is your voice volume turned up and not muted?
  • Is the SLVoice.exe that is in the Phoenix folder in the exceptions/allowed list for your firewall? If your firewall is turned off, turn it on and add the SLVoice.exe anyway.
  • Check the bandwidth you are actually getting and what you have set in preferences on the network tab. Please refer to this page for specifics.
  • Go to Advanced → Debug Settings, and in the window that opens, type: Cmdlinedisablevoice - then ensure this is set to FALSE.

Windows-specific

You need these files in your Phoenix folder; if you are missing any of them you can copy them from a standard viewer installation:

  • For 373 & below and for 908 upwards:
    • alut.dll
    • ortp.dll
    • SLVoice.exe
    • vivoxsdk.dll
    • wrap_oal.dll
  • For 725 and 818:
    • libsndfile-1.dll
    • ortp.dll
    • SLVoice.exe
    • vivoxoal.dll
    • vivoxplatform.dll
    • vivoxsdk.dll
    • zlib1.dll

Windows Vista and Windows 7

Try toggling compatibility mode:

  • Locate your desktop shortcut for Phoenix
  • Right click on the icon and select Properties
  • Select the Compatibility tab
  • Find “Run this program in compatibility mode for:” if it is set to “Windows XP Service pack 2” then disable this; otherwise, enable it (in short, invert the current setting)
  • Make sure “Run as Administrator” is enabled (if this is greyed out, then you're probably already running as administrator, so you can ignore this step).
  • Click Apply.
  • Now log back into the viewer, and see if voice works (do you have the white dot over your head?). If not, go to Preferences → Voice and reset voice; wait a few moments, then re-enable. 1)

On Window 7, if you find yourself being able to talk but not hear what others say, then a possible solution is to use the sound drivers from Vista. (This needs further confirmation.)

linux-specific

Every linux distro is different; and each distro may have more than one window manager to further complicate things. So tips can't be “absolute”; you will need to experiment and see what works for you. The following have been suggested by some as effective. But first….

In the Phoenix install directory, there's a text file (originally from LL) with tips on getting voice to work in linux. If you haven't read that, then you can try to see if it helps.

  • Make sure you have ALSA and/or FMOD available. FMOD is supplied with Phoenix, normally. If you look at Help → About Phoenix Viewer, you should see a line that resembles this:
Audio Driver Version: OpenAL, version 1.1 ALSOFT 1.10.622 / OpenAL Community / OpenAL Soft: PulseAudio Software
If that says “none” then you have no audio driver available to Phoenix and need to install one.
  • Edit the snowglobe shell script and remove the # in
    #export LL_BAD_OPENAL_DRIVER=x

That will force LL to use FMOD rather than ALSA. Some say this is how to get voice working.

  • Some swear that the problem is PulseAudio, so you can try to remove that from your system. Be warned, however, that this could cause more problems than it solves. Make sure you remove only Pulse and not half the OS.
  • Be sure to have the correct devices select in Phoenix for voice:
Preferences → Voice Chat → Device Settings (button) … input and output may not work if left at default; they may need to go to a specific device like “ALSA Capture on [device name]”.

Below are results for selected linux distros, based on input from Phoenix users. This will be updated as more information becomes available.

  • Mint 10, KDE: There is no need to edit the snowglobe shell script as described above. Also, PulseAudio seems to work well with voice; in fact, it is seems needed to get any audio going at all. So if you don't have Pulse installed, try installing it along with pavucontrol. In pavucontrol, check the Config tab to ensure devcies are set up correctly. Then in System Settings > Multimedia, “prefer” your headset for both Communications settings. Finally, in Phoenix, Preferences > Voice, set it to use ALSA, in the device section.
  • openSUSE 11.2 64 bit: No success reported.
  • ubuntu 10.04: Users report voice working “out of the box”, no additional packages needed. However, if for some reason you cannot get voice working, use synaptic to check that you have gstreamer0.10-alsa, PulseAudio and pavucontrol installed. See Mint 9 above for more info. Note however that some ubuntu users report issues with streaming audio and video.
