Texture Picker

Texture Picker - Edit Window This window is normally accessed via the Texture tab of the Edit window, but also from any location that allows textures to be selected.

The texture picker allows you to select a texture to apply to an object (among other things) - assuming the object is modifyable for you. If not, then you will not be able to do anything with this window.

The large square will display the current texture for the object. If the objects has multiples textures, then the box will display this (in text). This warns you so that you do not inadvertently change textures you did not intend to change.

Below this is the size of the currently displayed texture, in pixels.

The Default button will apply the standard plywood texture (shown in the image to the right).
The Blank button will apply a blank white texture.
Transparent applies the standard transparent (invisible) texture.
None Removes the texture entirely. This is not used on objects, but it is useful, for example, to remove a profile picture, or the image associated with a parcel.
Apply UUID Enter the UUID of a texture into the field and click Apply UUID to apply that texture to the object. When editing, this field will only display the UUID of textures which exist in your own inventory.

The Apply now checkbox will immediately apply any changed texture to the object, so that you may preview it.

On the right side are two radio buttons: Inventory and Local. These allow you to use textures from your inventory, or directly from your hard drive.

Inventory

The folder list shows your inventory folders, and the textures they contain. You can use this to select a new texture to apply. Another way of selecting a texture is to drag it from your inventory window into the large box at the top left.

A third way to select a texture is to use the dropper icon, which is below the large texture square. You can then click on any texture on any in-world object and, providing that you have that texture in your inventory, it will be used by the texture picker. This is a very handy and rapid way of selecting textures while building.

Once you have finished, Click Ok to apply any changes made, or Cancel to revert to the original texture.

Local

Texture Picker - Local View

In this view, you can access a list of textures (images) that are on your hard drive. This allows you to preview how a texture will look, prior to uploading it. It is an alternative to using temporary uploads.

NOTE: An applied local texture will be visible only to you, and only until you relog. You can get around others not seeing local textures by uploading the image to a picture sharing site (eg, Dropbox, Photobucket, Flickr, Imgur, etc) and then using media on a prim to display it in-world. You can also work on beta grid, where uploads do not affect your SL L$ balance.

This view has a few buttons, and below that, a list of the textures you have already added.

  • Add: this opens a file picker window, which you can use to select a new image from your hard drive, to add to the saved list. The texture selected is not automatically uploaded; it is merely referenced in the list below.
  • Remove: deletes the currently selected texture from the list.
  • Upload: uploads the currently selected texture to SL.
  • Apply now: If you click on a texture in the list, you will instantly see it applied to the item that you are editing. Note again that this will be shown to you only.

Some use scripted systems to apply temp textures for testing, such as on various mesh body parts, but since a local texture doesn't shown in inventory, you can't get the UUID to add to the script. Solution: Surprisingly, llGetTexture can actually get a UUID for the local texture when it is applied to a prim, and llSetTexture can apply it.

Toolbar Buttons

Toolbar Buttons Window

This window is used to customize the layout of the on-screen buttons. The window is accessed by right clicking any of these buttons.

You can drag and drop buttons to and from this window, from the tool bars. Tool bars exist on both sides of the screen, and at the bottom.

The buttons will be displayed according to each toolbar's settings: icons, text labels, or both.

The following toolbar buttons are available:

Below are these three buttons:

  • Clear all toolbars will remove all buttons from all toobars.
  • Restore defaults will restore buttons as they would be on a clean install.
  • Locked: If you enable this, it will prevent you from accidentally moving or removing buttons from the toolbars.

See this video for a tutorial.

Script Information

This window is accessed from the About LandGeneral tab. It gives a detailed list of all scripted objects and their script memory consumption, for all parcels you can edit in the region. This is similar to the information given in World → Region DetailsDebugGet Top Scripts, though it provides fewer options and functions.

The information you see depends on your rights to the parcel you're inspecting:

  • If you are the estate owner or an estate manager, each individual object in the region is listed:
    • Total memory used for the entire region.
    • Total number of URLs used and available for the entire region.
  • If you are the parcel owner, or have object return powers for the parcel through a group, individual objects on all parcels in the region owned by the owner of the parcel being inspected are listed:
    • Total memory used for all objects on all parcels in the region that are owned by the owner of the parcel.
    • Total URLs used and available for all objects on all parcels in the region owned by the owner of the parcel.
  • Otherwise, no individual objects are listed:

The window has two tabs.

Region Memory

Script Information

The top gives some basic information about the region and script usage in it:

  • Number of parcels
  • Total memory used
  • Number of URLs used 1).

Below this is a list of scripted objects, with information about each - presented in column format:

  • Size (kb): Indicates how much memory is used by the script(s) in the object.
  • URLs: Indicates how many URL(s) the object is using.
  • Object Name: Name of the scripted object.
  • Object Owner: Name of the object's owner.
  • Parcel: Name of the parcel on which the object is located.

You can click on any column header to sort the list.

Below this are 3 buttons:

  • Refresh List: Self explanatory.
  • Return: Immediately return the highlighted object to its owner; there is no confirmation request, so be careful!
  • Highlight: Displays a beacon showing the location of the highlighted object.

See this page for documentation on Firestorm 6.0.2 (56680) and earlier.
1)
Note the the term URL here does not just refer to streaming video like YouTube, but also to scripts that use HTTP to communicate with other objects, such as, for example, some scripted vending systems.

About Land - General Tab

The General Tab

The General Tab shows basic information about the current parcel. It can be accessed by first clicking the parcel's name in the top-bar of the client. The general tab also allows parcel owners to customize various essential aspects of their land.

  • Name: The name of the parcel which will show on the top of the viewer when you are on the parcel, and in search if the parcel is set to show in search.
  • Description: An additional description of the parcel which is visible in this window and in search results if the parcel is set to show in search. This also can be used to place keywords about the land to increase search results.
  • Type: The type of region the parcel is located on (types being: Mainland or Estate/Full Region, Homestead, or Openspace).
  • Rating: The maturity rating of the region, which can be: General, Moderate, or Adult. Depending on the rating, certain ages or those that are not age verified will not be permitted to enter.
  • Owner: Indicates who “owns” the parcel, usually a specific resident, or group. Normal users do not actually have ownership rights like in real life. They have control over the parcel as long as they pay monthly maintenance fees directly or indirectly to Linden Lab (usually a premium and tier), who actually own the servers the region is hosted on. In this sense it is more like a lease in real life. The info (the “I” icon”) button will open the 'Profile' floating window for the listed owner.
  • Group: In some cases it may become necessary to have a parcel set to a group (for instance, to grant access to a club based on who is in the VIP group). The Set button will open the Groups tab of the Communicate or Contacts window in order to set or change the group assignment.
  • Allow Deed to Group: Allows the landowner to sell the parcel to the assigned group. The owners of the group become the new owners of the land. The Deed button opens the 'Deed to Group' window in order to transfer ownership. (See Group Land Ownership.)
  • Owner Makes Contribution With Deed: When transferring ownership to a group, this check box also assigns land area from the owner's land allowance to the group at the same time. (See Tier for more information).
  • For Sale: This shows for sale or not for sale status. If for sale, it shows price and whether for sale to anyone, or a specific person. If you own the land, buttons to set for sale, not for sale, or abandon the land will appear.
  • Claimed: The date and time the current owner became the owner of the parcel.
  • Area: The horizontal area of the parcel. Sloped land is measured in the XY horizontal plane, not along the slope. Land is divisible into units of 4×4 meters in size, so the minimum parcel area is 16 sq.m., and can be any multiple of 16 up to the full area of a region (256x256m or 65,536 sq.m.). A single parcel must be entirely within the boundaries of one region, but may consist of discontinuous pieces.
  • Traffic: The number of avatar-minutes present on the parcel over the last measurement interval. Thus one avatar present for one hour = 60 traffic. The normal measurement interval is over the previous 24 hours, and is updated 2 times a day. (See Land Traffic For more information.)

There are buttons at the bottom of the window:

  • Script Info: Opens the Script Information window giving details about script usage on the region.
  • Buy Land: If the parcel is for sale, this will open the Buy Land window, giving details so you can decide whether you wish to purchase it.
  • Buy Pass: If the parcel requires paid access, you can click this to purchase an access pass.
  • Abandon Land: If you own or rent the parcel, you can click this to return it to Linden control. You receive no payment for this.
  • Buy for Group: Similar to Buy (above) except that you are purchasing the land for a specific group. See this SL Wiki page for more information.

Top Objects Window

This window opens when you select Get Top Colliders or Get Top Scripts from the Region DetailsDebug Tab. It will show either objects experiencing collisions or information for scripted objects on the region. This can help potentially problematic physical or scripted objects, which might be generating high region/server lag.

Top Objects Window

NOTES:

  • Top Colliders: Since readings shown are for a brief instant in time, repeatedly click the refresh button to observe if activity is sustaining or spurious. Something that's rapidly colliding at one moment may settle to rest the next.
Note that any prims acting as floors will show collisions if an avatar is walking on them; this is normal and expected (were there no collisions, the avatar would fall through the prim).
  • Top Scripts: Times reported are the average script time per frame for the last 30 minutes for all scripts on the object. If the object has been in the region for less than 30 minutes the number reported will be the average time per frame since the object entered the region.
  • Normally, you don't have to worry about removing anything if performance feels fine and looks OK in the Statistics window.
  • Only use this tool with great care after you've learned the technical aspects involved: while you can remove troublesome objects, you can also inadvertently destroy content.

Click on column titles to sort them in ascending or descending order. The columns are:

  • Score: The higher, the worse, but consider it relative to the total shown in Statistics. (Only shown in Top Colliders.)
  • Time: The total average script time per frame over the last 30 minutes for all scripts in the object. (Only shown in Top Scripts.)
  • Name: The object's name.
  • Owner: The Resident who owns the object; if the owner is unfamiliar and the region just started behaving slowly, it may be worth checking out.
  • Location: Coordinates of where the object is located in the region.
  • Time: When the object was rezzed inworld. Older objects are more likely to be intended to stay.
  • Mono Time: The amount of time spent specifically running scripts compiled to Mono. (Only shown in Top Scripts.)
  • URLs: Which URLs are being used per the LSL HTTP server. Only shown in Top Scripts.

Other fields and buttons on this window are:

  • Object ID: The object's UUID.
  • Show Beacon: Select an object in the list, then click Show Beacon to visually pinpoint the object's Location.
  • Object Name & Owner: For each of these, type in a specific name, then click Filter to only show matching results. Partial searches work: “car” shows objects named “red car”.
  • Refresh Button: Refreshes the list.
  • Return Selected: Returns the selected object in the list to its owner. Be careful, there's no confirmation!
  • Return All: Returns all objects in the list to their owners. Asks for your confirmation; there's no undo!
  • Teleport to: TPs you to the object selected in the list.
  • Script Info: Shows detailed script information for the selected object. This requires that the Firestorm bridge be enabled and worn.
  • Profile: If an avatar is selected in the lsti (as opposed to an object), this button will display the person's profile.
  • Estate Kick: Ejects the selected avatar from the region.

Object Import

This window opens when you select, from the top menu bar, Avatar → Upload → Import Linkset, or Build → Upload → Import Linkset.

It allows you to import objects which you have previously exported. For more general information on exporting and importing, see here.

First click on the Choose File button, which opens the file picker window so you can browse to the file you wish to import.

Once the file has been selected, you can specify import options:

  • Do not attach object: Enable this if you do not wish to automatically wear objects that were exported while worn.
  • Restore Region Position: Create the imported object at the same region coordinates at which it was exported.
  • Upload: Upload any associated content (textures, notecards, scripts…) as well; this has a L$10 cost per texture.
Note that if you disable this, but already have the textures in your inventory, the object will have the textures correctly applied - since you own the texture referenced by the UUID.

Click the Import button to start the import. The object will be created near you - unless you are importing an attachment, in which case it will automatically attach once created.

Closing the Import window before import has completed, may crash you, so don't do that. ;-)

  • Log: Under the main editing field, displays messages regarding save and compiler status. If the compiler finds an error when you try to save, it displays the line and column number where it was discovered, along with a brief message about the nature of the problem.
  • Reset: Restarts execution of the script from the beginning. Can be useful to “refresh” malfunctioning scripts. Not applicable if you are editing a script in your inventory.
  • Running: Sets the running state of the script. Uncheck this box to stop execution. Not applicable if you're editing a script in your inventory.
  • Mono: Runs the script on the Mono scripting engine for better performance. Enabled by default. If there are compatibility issues, uncheck this to run the script on the older, original LSL engine. If you're editing a script in your inventory, then normally, scripts are saved in LSL2; however, you can change the default to mono in PreferencesFirestorm→ Build 1 tab.
  • Insert: This dropdown contains a list of every built-in function in LSL. Choose a function to paste its name into the editing field at your cursor's location.
  • Use Experience: This checkbox appears only if the script is contained in a rezzed item. Scripts opened directly from inventory will not display it.

Firestorm Beta 6.2.4. Prerelease

LMR - Love Me Render: Mac retina display, and graphics related changes. See release notes below for more details.

EAM - Estate Access Management: Improved estate tools. See release notes below for more details.

Changed Wiki Pages

The pages below have been updated to reflect some of the changes since Firestorm 6.0.2. These pages are continually being updated. Please do not bookmark them, as they will disappear once 6.2.4 goes to public release.

  • LookAt: Limit distance from head: Clamps your lookat target around your head. Limits the lookat crosshair to a fixed distance from your avatar, showing the general direction of viewing but not the actual lookat target.
  • Graphics - Hardware Settings: Enable support for HiDPI displays: (Mac OSX only; requires restart). This will generally give you a sharper display but a lower frame rate.
  • Avatar Menu - Avatar Health - Scripts: (previously found in About Land - Script Info - Avatar). This window display your avatar script usage, memory used and attachment point.
  • Preferences - Chat - CmdLine: Added the ability to teleport to specific coordinates in a region. See FIRE-23939.
  • Inventory Texture Refresh: Added the ability to texture refresh via right click menu in inventory. This option is only available if the object is currently being worn and refreshes the texture of the worn object.
  • Apply UUID Texture Picker: Added the ability the apply a texture using UUID. When editing, this field will only display the UUID of textures which exist in your own inventory.
  • Backup settings confirmation Added modal to verify you wish to overwrite (update) your existing backed-up settings.
  • External Editor: Added pathname field for external editor.
  • Separate Transcripts and Logs Folders for Agni and Aditi - Firestorm Havok version. See FIRE-24023.

BugSplat viewer

Update changes This viewer introduces a revised updater, replacing the current Viewer Manager Process (VMP). Instead of running the VMP before every viewer session, we now run the updater as a child process of the viewer. Viewer notifications are used to alert the user to a pending update.

This viewer starts more quickly than with the VMP. It displays only one Taskbar or Dock viewer icon. Pinning that icon should behave exactly as expected, going forward.

Pinned icons for the Viewer Launcher and VMP-driven viewer may need to be deleted and recreated.

We still run the updater before _first_ launching a newly-installed Windows viewer, to address the potential problem of installing a 64-bit viewer on a Windows system that does not support it. Similarly, if you install a 32-bit viewer on a Windows system that can support the 64-bit viewer, it retrieves the 64-bit viewer instead.

Bugsplat If this viewer crashes, the crash report is sent to BugSplat rather than to Linden's internal crash reporting system.

(Third party developers: the existing Breakpad crash-reporting code is still present in the code base. BugSplat integration is enabled by a CMake variable.))

Whitelisting the Viewer in Anti-Virus Software (plus Firewalls and Anti-Malware Sofware)

Introduction

Some anti-virus programs (and firewalls and anti-malware programs) will incorrectly flag a viewer - or necessary components of a viewer - as a virus or threat. They may remove the suspected part completely, rendering all or part of the viewer slow or non-functional. There is at least one anti-virus program which will scan every file placed on your computer, even if created by an authorized program. This can affect Firestorm (or any viewer) in that it will scan each and every texture placed in cache, slowing down performance of the viewer significantly, keeping objects and/or textures from rezzing, and keeping CPU usage high.

There is nothing we can do about this. However, it should be possible for you to tell your anti-virus (firewalls/anti-malware) that the viewer is safe; you will need to whitelist the viewer program as well as some components.

The following is a list of some protection software and how to whitelist. Naturally we cannot provide instructions for all existing programs, and the information here may be outdated. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that you consult the software manual for the specific program you use, for accurate and up to date information.

In the instructions below, substitute “firewall” or “anti-malware program” for “anti-virus” as needed.

Known Issues

See the Malwarebytes tab below.

Reinstalling and Whitelisting

Here are the steps to follow to reinstall and whitelist a viewer in such as way that the anti-virus program doesn't “mangle” the viewer yet again:

  1. Uninstall the viewer normally.
  2. Disable the anti-virus software completely
  3. REBOOT your computer to make sure that the AV is not running anymore.
  4. Reinstall the viewer.
    • On Windows, make sure you do not install it back to the default folder suggested; INSTALL TO A NEW FOLDER. This step is vital.
    • On Mac, simply reinstall to your Application folder as usual.
  5. In your anti-virus program, whitelist the following, per the instructions below (or better, consult the manual for your anti-virus software):
    • Windows: the viewer install folder
      • inside this, the viewer itself (firestorm.exe), slplugin.exe, slvoice.exe and dullahan_host.exe
    • Mac: the Firestorm application (normally in your Applications folder)
    • the viewer cache folder
      • In its default location, the folder is hidden on most OSs. To find it, you will need to show hidden folders. Now you need to locate the cache folder:
        • Windows Vista/7/8/10: C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\Firestorm
        • Windows Vista/7/8/10: C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\Firestorm_x64
        • Mac: /Users/[USERNAME]/Library/Caches/Firestorm
  6. REBOOT your computer at this time.
  7. Run the viewer to ensure that it is working correctly; do a test of search and voice to ensure that both work, checking that the respective plugins get loaded. LOG OUT of the viewer.
  8. Re-enable your anti-virus software and run the viewer again, repeating the tests above.

Whitelisting Steps for Specific AV Software

If you don't find your antivirus program listed, or the instructions are out
of date, check the help files or support site for your antivirus program.

Adaware free

  • Open the Adaware user interface
  • Click Scan Computer (second icon from top)
  • Go to Manage Exclusions and click View
  • Click Add
  • Navigate to main Firestorm application folder
  • Click OK
  • Repeat for Firestorm folders in User/Local and User/Roaming

Advanced System Care

If you run the “junk files cleanup” function, then Advanced System Care is liable to trash your settings. Further to this, this program can also severely interfere with viewer connection to SL servers, as documented here.

Avast

Basic Whitelisting

Refer to this page for how to whitelist. Please ensure that you whitelist both the viewer and the viewer cache folder.

If you cannot save snapshots to your hard drive
  1. Go to Settings → General tab
  2. Go to 'Blocked and allowed apps'
  3. Click 'Allow App' and scroll the list of programs to find Firestorm and select it (see picture below)

AVG

  • Open the AVG user interface.
  • Click Tools→Advance Settings.
  • Resident Shield→Exceptions.
  • The Add the program (or file, directory) you wish to be excluded from scans.

Bullguard

  1. Open Bullguard as normal
  2. Click on “Settings”
  3. Click on “Advanced”
  4. Go to “Antivirus” in the lefthand column
  5. Open the menu (down arrow)
  6. Select “Tuning”
  7. In the selection of tick boxes on the righthand panel, select Skip File/Folders
  8. Click on Files/Folders
  9. This will bring up a probably empty set of lines, so click on the “+” sign
  10. This should allow you to navigate to the particular folder, in this case the Firestorm Cache folder
  11. Select that and it will appear in the first line of the box
  12. To add other Firestorm folders listed at the top of this wiki page, repeat as needed
  13. Here is also a check box to allow you to skip processes. The procedure is the same: Click on “process”
  14. Click “+” and navigate to the .exe you wish to whitelist
  15. Close Bullguard.

  • Open Computer Security.
  • On the main page of Computer Security, click Settings.
  • Select Computer Security > Virus and spyware scanning.
  • Select Other settings > Manual scanning.
  • Click the Exclude files from the scan link. The Exclude from scanning dialog is displayed.
  • Select the Objects tab.
  • Select the Exclude objects (files, folders…) check box.
  • Click Add.
  • Navigate to and select the Firestorm install folder
  • Click Add again
  • Navigate to and select the Firestorm cache folder
  • Click OK to close the Exclude from scanning dialog.

Gatekeeper (Mac OS X)

If Gatekeeper prevents you from opening Firestorm, there is a simple workaround: See “How to open an app from a unidentified developer and exempt it from Gatekeeper” on this page. Once you have allowed Firestorm to open via this method, Gatekeeper will not flag it on subsequent launches (until you reinstall Firestorm again).

For a longer-term method, please visit here for a tutorial on whitelisting using the Gatekeeper software.

Kaspersky

In order to create an exclusion rule:

  • Open application settings window.
  • Select Protection on the left.
  • Click the Trusted Zone button in the Exclusions block.
  • Go to the tab Exclusion rules and click Add.
  • Select an exclusion type in the Properties field: Object and/or Threat type.
    • Object
Click select object and choose a file, folder or a mask to exclude.
    • Select a Component in the corresponding field. The rule will apply to the selected component.
    • Threat type. Click enter threat type to select a file, folder or a mask to exclude.

Rules can apply to the following protection components:

  • Virus scan,
  • File Anti-Virus,
  • Mail Anti-Virus (Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 for Windows Workstations 6.0.4.x only),
  • Proactive Defense (Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 for Windows Workstations 6.0.4.x only),
  • Web Anti-Virus (Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 for Windows Workstations 6.0.4.x only).

A scan if a disk or folder containing excluded objects scans the entire disk/folder except the excluded objects. Yet you can force scan excluded objects from the contextual menu (by right-clicking).

Also you can create an exclusion rule from within a report window:

  • Right-click the report object you want excluded.
  • Choose the option Add to Trusted Zone.

An Exclusion rule window will open. Make sure that you are satisfied with the new exclusion rule settings. Object name and threat type fields are assigned automatically on the basis of the report data. Click OK to create the rule.

Can't Save Files to Hard Drive (Snapshots, Chat Files, Backups, etc.)

Additionally, if you're on Windows 10 and you can't save snapshots to your hard drive (https://jira.phoenixviewer.com/browse/FIRE-23347), adding the viewer folders to the exclusion list may not be enough if you have 'Controlled Folder Access' enabled; you will need to add Firestorm to the allowed apps.

Try following these steps:

  1. Right click your Windows Defender icon on your system tray > View Security Dashboard > Virus and threat Protection > Virus & Threat Protection Settings > Controlled Folder Access
  2. Click the 'Manage Controlled Folder Access' link
  3. Under 'Controlled Folder Access' click the 'Allow an App through Controlled Folder Access' link
  4. Click '+ Add an allowed app'
  5. Browse to the viewer executable in the installation folder, left click to select , click Open at the bottom of the files explorer.

Alternatively, you can also simply disable the Controlled Folder Access feature by clicking the on/off button after Step #2.

Can't run Firestorm installer

Download Intelligence

Norton Internet Security includes a feature called Download Intelligence. This works such that the user community reports downloads as good or bad. While this may be very helpful, it can also be unfairly detrimental to programs, especially when they are updated as they are then treated as totally new.

Therefore, if you use Download Intelligence, you are urged to disable it before attempting to download any of our viewers, in order to avoid them being incorrectly reported as infected with a virus. Refer to this page for instructions.

Panda Cloud Antivirus Free (version 2.1.1)

  • Click on the “Antivirus” section of the UI.
  • Click on “Advanced Settings” (bottom of the panel current version)
  • Click on “Exclusions” tab
  • Choose “Add”, then navigate to your Firestorm installation folder and put a check in the box to the left of slplugin.exe (and llceflib_host.exe for FS 4.7.7 and later), and everything else you want to exclude. Once you've checked something, the “exclude” button at the bottom of the panel is enabled. Click it when you've finished checking off everything you want to exclude.
  • Click “OK” at the bottom of the “Exclusions” tab.

See this page for additional Panda tips for whitelisting files and folders: http://www.pandasecurity.com/homeusers/downloads/docs/product/help/is/2012/en/709.htm The page is out of date but the methods may still work.

PC Tools Spyware Doctor

  • Right click PC Tools icon in taskbar → Open
  • Go to Settings → Global action list
  • Click “Add”, choose “File” & browse to your Firestorm installation folder & choose slplugin.exe - and llceflib_host.exe (for FS 4.7.9 and later).
  • This will add the plugin(s) to the global whitelist.

Webroot

To date (August 2015), there is no way to whitelist the entire cache folder in WebRoot. Therefore WebRoot may continue to cause severe problems including slow rezzing and viewer freezing.

If you test with WebRoot off and find your SL experience greatly improved, the only suggestion we have is to choose another antivirus program.

Some more more info on Webroot and the problems it has been known to cause, see this page.

Snapshot Window

If you wish to take in-world snapshots, click the Snapshot button on the bottom button bar, or from the top menu bar, Avatar → Snapshot. 1) The Snapshot window gives options which allow you to control where to save, how large the image should be, and several others. They are explained below.

On the right is the snapshot preview area. This shows what part of your view will be included in the snapshot. Click Refresh, upper left, to refresh the preview.

If you click the « to the right of Refresh, the snapshot window changes orientation, becoming vertical with a smaller preview window. Click the » to revert to the default layout. This page describes the default, but the same principles apply to the vertical layout.

To the left of snapshot preview area, there are several options:

  • Capture section: you may select what you wish to take a snapshot of:
    • Colors or Depth: Colors speaks for itself. Depth creates a grey-scale image where objects close by are dark, while those further away are light. Such an image can be combined with the Color image in image postwork. Note: This option can only be changed when saving to disk.
    • Interface: If enabled, this will include the viewer interface in the picture.
      • L$ Balance: Whether to include your on-screen L$ balance in the snapshot.
    • HUDs: If enabled, any HUDs you might be wearing will be included in the picture.
  • Freeze Frame: If you click this, the entire scene will freeze (except particles) allowing you to capture that perfect moment, and then spend time in getting exactly the right camera angle. Uncheck this to disable the “freeze”.
  • Auto-Refresh: If enabled, the preview window will be updated every time you move the camera. Causes noticeable client lag while enabled.
  • Filter: Allows you to apply some interesting effects to the image. If you are interested in the technical details behind filters, refer to this SL wiki page.

The buttons below allow you to select where the image should be saved.

Once you have connected to your Flickr account, click on the Photo tab. As with other snapshot windows, you have a small preview, and can set the image size, and apply various types of image filter.

Below the preview, you can specify a title for the image, and give a description. Optionally, you can include the SL location, and supply tags for the image.

Lastly, you should select the appropriate rating for the image. Please be sure to do this or you may find your account being “frozen” till you correct any incorrectly rated images.

Click Upload to post the image to your Flickr feed.

Here, you can send pictures from SL directly to someone via email.

In the Message area, supply the name of the person you're sending to, the name of the sender (your SL user name is filled in, but you can change this), a subject line, and a message.

In the Settings tab, you can change the size of the image to be sent, and also select the image quality. (Images will be in JPG format.)

The Selection button will return to the main window.

See this page for documentation on Firestorm 5.1.7 (55786) and earlier.
1)
NOTE: You can also take quick snapshots by pressing Ctrl-` - this just asks for a location in which to save the picture, bypassing this window entirely.
2)
Note that giving a value which is larger that your actual screen resolution is not recommended; in some instances, this will result in artifacts appearing on the image.

Movement Issues

Avatar Can't Move

If you can turn in circles but not move forward/backwards, you probably have Movelock enabled.

  • Go to the Avatar menu→ Movement submenu and make sure Movelock is not ticked.
  • See Movelock info for more information or if you are unable to change the Movelock setting.

However, there are a few other things to try:

  • Go to a different region and see if you are able to move there. If so, something at your original location is causing the problem.
  • If you are using a LAQ mesh head, make sure you don't have the Pose feature turned on.
  • Make sure you don't have some other HUD with a pose feature.
  • If you can't find what attachment is causing the problem, try going to Advanced menu (Ctrl-Alt-D ) → Release Keys.
    • Note: Release Keys will be greyed out if RLV has locked any of your attachments. To disable RLV, go to Prefs → Firestorm → Extras, untick the top item, and then relog.
  • Make sure you don't have the Firestorm pose stand active.
    • If you have the Pose Stand button on your toolbar, make sure it's not “on.”
    • If you don't have the button, go to Avatar menu → Toolbar Buttons, drag the Pose Stand button out to your toolbar, and make sure it's not “on.”

Avatar Is Stuck in an Animation

  • Try Avatar menu → Avatar Health → Stop Animations & Revoke Permissions.
  • Try right clicking your avatar → Reset Skeleton & Animations.
  • If the above two items did not work, go to a different region and try them again.
  • If you have the animation in your inventory, play it from inventory, then click Stop.
  • Remove attachments one by one until the animation stops. (This will eliminate worn items as a cause.)
    • Note: Animations can be in ANY attachment.
    • Note: Attachments are anything with a box icon. Look in Inventory → Current Outfit folder to see all your attachments.
  • Make sure the Firestorm AO is off:
    • On the AO button on your toolbar, untick the checkbox.
    • Note: The Firestorm AO can be active even if the button is not on your toolbar. If it is not on your toolbar, go to Avatar menu → Toolbar Buttons, drag the AO button out onto your toolbar, and make sure it is not ticked.
  • If you know that a “sittable” item gave you the animation:
    1. Go to Preferences → Firestorm → Protection → Revoke Permissions.
    2. Temporarily set this to “Revoke on Sit and Stand.”
    3. Sit on the item, then stand. This should stop the animation.
    4. Change Preferences → Firestorm → Protection → Revoke Permissions back to either “Never” or “Revoke on Stand.”
  • Try Advanced menu → Release keys. (After doing this, you will need to recreate the FS bridge: Avatar → Avatar health → Recreate LSL Bridge.)

Furniture or Pose Ball Does Not Animate Me

  • You may simply be experiencing lag: See Troubleshooting Lag for tips to reduce this.
  • Many pose balls will request permission to animate you. If you did not see the animation request, look in your Notifications window for the message. Click “Accept.”
  • Make sure you have not blocked the item or its owner: Look in Comm menu → Block List, see if the item or the item's owner is there, and remove the item/person from the block list.
  • Go to Preferences → Firestorm → Protection → Revoke Permissions. For normal use, this should be set to either “Normal” (no protection) or “Revoke on Stand.” It should normally NOT be set to “Revoke on Sit” or “Revoke on Sit and Stand,” as both of these will prevent items from animating you when you are sitting.

Avatar Rubber-Banding

“Rubber-banding” is when you try to walk forward and then suddenly snap back to a previous position. Sometimes you will seem unable to stop walking. This is caused by region lag, when the server can't keep up with processing avatar movement (collisions).

  • For info about region lag see here: Region Lag
  • For some things that region or parcel owners can do to reduce region lag see here: Reducing Server Lag.

Avatar Slides When Trying to Walk, but No Animation Is Playing

This typically happens when you have two or more conflicting AOs (animation overriders) on.

  • Start by removing known AOs until you are wearing only one known AO.
  • If that doesn't help, start by removing other HUDs, then all other attachments, one by one, until it stops. Any worn item can contain an animation, so don't assume that some items are “ok.”
  • Note: Attachments are anything with a box icon. Look in Inventory → Current Outfit folder to see all your attachments.

Avatar Spinning

  • Try turning the opposite direction to the spin.
  • Try pressing BOTH right and left arrow keys at the same time, repeatedly.
  • Relog.

User Floating a Few Meters Above the Ground

This is a possible bridge problem: recreate bridge by going to Avatar menu → Avatar Health → Recreate LSL Bridge.

Avatar Goes Forever Upward

This is a possible bridge problem: recreate bridge by going to Avatar menu → Avatar Health → Recreate LSL Bridge.

Head Keeps Moving Even When "Head Follows Mouse" Sliders Are Set to Zero

For unknown reasons, some users need to change an additional setting:

Go to Preferences → Privacy → Lookat, and tick “Don't Send My Selection Target Hints.”

I Am Stuck Running

  • In most cases, pressing Ctrl-R to toggle run mode will get you back into walk (though it may in some cases be necessary to hit Ctrl-R more than once).
  • If you are wearing a scripted AO (animation overrider), turn off any “running” features it has.
  • If you are using the Firestorm built-in AO (animation overrider), make sure there are no running animations in the “Walking” or “Standing” categories.

After Strafe

Ref. BUG-6825

In one specific case, the above will not work. Specifically:

  • You have Preferences → Move & View → Movement → Tap-tap-hold to run enabled.
  • Press shift, then tap-tap-hold the left or right arrow key

That gets you running sideways. If you release shift before the arrow key, you will be stuck running.

To stop running, you have to repeat the sequence: press shift, then tap-tap-hold left or right arrow.

Can't Get Lips to Stop Moving

  • Go to Preferences → Sound & Media → Voice, and deselect “Move Avatar Lips When Speaking.” Note: This is the only viewer feature that affects lip movement.
  • If you are wearing a mesh head, turn off any animations in the head. For more help, ask the support group for that head.
  • Go to Comm menu → Gestures. Tick “Active only” at the bottom of the window. Review the list for any gestures that might contain a face animation. If in doubt, turn them all off, one at a time, to find the one responsible for the lip movement.

When Standing Up from a Groundsit, I Start Running

This is a known SL bug also affecting the SL viewer. Refer to this SL bug report for more information.
