Second Life Release Viewer version 6.3.7.535996 - Maintenance: Yorsh

Release Notes for v6.3.7. (535996) - Second Life Viewer Released on Friday, February 7, 2020.
https://releasenotes.secondlife.com/viewer/6.3.7.535996.html

Maintenance: Yorsh

Yorsh (Also known as Mora Grogg) (Russian: Ёрш which means “Ruffe”) is a Russian mixed drink consisting of beer thoroughly mixed with an ample quantity of vodka. It is traditionally drunk in a social setting, typically with a toast followed by downing a full glass of it at one go.

Vodka is a neutral spirit which does not greatly alter the flavor of the beer, but does greatly increase its alcohol content.

Probably the first evidence of presence of such a mix in Russian drinking culture is the Tale of Woe and Misfortune, an anonymous 17th century-poem. The early version of yorsh described there included mead, however.

Second Life Release Viewer version 6.3.6.535003 - Maintenance: Xanté

Release Notes for v6.3.6. (535003) - Second Life Viewer Released on Tuesday, January 28, 2020.
https://releasenotes.secondlife.com/viewer/6.3.6.535003.html

Maintenance: Xanté

Xanté (“Xanté Poire au Cognac”) is a pear liqueur based on cognac, produced by The Xanté Company. It has 38% ABV. Xanté is pronounced santé, just as if the x were an s, which is the French expression for “cheers!”.

Second Life Release Viewer version 6.3.5.533275 - Maintenance: Wassail

Release Notes for v6.3.5. (533275) - Second Life Viewer Released on Wednesday, December 4, 2019.
https://releasenotes.secondlife.com/viewer/6.3.5.533275.html

Maintenance: Wassail This Viewer uses Viewer Manager 2.0.531000

Wassail is a beverage of hot mulled cider, drunk traditionally as an integral part of wassailing, a Medieval Christmastide English drinking ritual intended to ensure a good cider apple harvest the following year.

Second Life Release Viewer version 6.3.4.532299 - Ordered Shutdown

Release Notes for v6.3.4. (532299) - Second Life Viewer Released on Monday, November 4, 2019.
https://releasenotes.secondlife.com/viewer/6.3.4.532299.html

Ordered Shutdown This viewer has changes intended to make crashes on shutdown less likely. This should have no changes to existing features. For anyone interested in the code details: we use singleton classes extensively for “manager” classes that are only supposed to have one instance each. These are created during startup, with the order determined by when they are needed. Such classes now have the ability to keep track of their creation order and dependencies, so that the destruction process on shutdown can reverse this process systematically. So far only a subset of singleton classes have been modified to take advantage of ordered shutdowns, with more coming in future releases.

Second Life Release Viewer version 6.3.3.531811 - Voice

Release Notes for v6.3.3. (531811) - Second Life Viewer Released on Friday, October 18, 2019.
https://releasenotes.secondlife.com/viewer/6.3.3.531811.html

Voice This viewer improves voice detection when you’re speaking ( VOICE-56 ). If you’ve been having trouble with your voice is breaking up, then this may be the solution.

Second Life Release Viewer version 6.3.2.530962 - Maintenance: Vinsanto

Release Notes for v6.3.2. (530962) - Second Life Viewer Released on Tuesday, October 15, 2019.
https://releasenotes.secondlife.com/viewer/6.3.2.530962.html

Maintenance: Vinsanto This Viewer uses Viewer Manager 2.0.529188

Vinsanto is an ancient winemaking tradition of Santorini that dates back thousands of years and represents an important part of Santorini’s history.

Preferences - Sound & Media

Sounds Tab

There are several volume sliders available here so you can customize the levels for each. Note that the master volume slider affects ALL volume.

Your personal maturity rating determines whether or not you are able to hear sounds originating from a Moderate or Adult region. Your personal maturity rating must meet or exceed the maturity rating on the region you wish to hear sounds from.
For more information, please refer to this page.
  • Buttons: This is for UI sounds that are shown in Preferences → Sound & Media > UI Sounds 1 and 2.
  • Ambient: These are the flying and footstep sounds.
  • Sound Effects: Scripted sounds from objects.
  • Streaming Music:
  • Media: Sounds from media objects.
  • Voice Chat:
  • Mute when minimized: Checking this will mute all sounds when you minimize the viewer.

You can enable/disable Streaming music, Media (video) and Voice Chat from the the check boxes to the right of their respective volume sliders. For issues getting audio or media working, refer to this page.

  • Play sounds from collisions:

(to the right of the Ambient slider) Enable this to hear when collisions occur.
  • Play sounds from gestures: (to the right of the Sound Effects slider) Enable this to hear sounds from gestures.
  • Play a sound when my friends:1)
    • Log Out
  • L$ change theshold: This sets the value above which you will get an audible alert when you receive or spend L$. Amounts below this will not trigger a sound.
  • Output Device: This drop down allows you to change the output device for viewer sounds
    • If you make any change in device selection, the change will take effect the next time the viewer is started.
    • Selecting “Default” will always select the first output device; if the available devices change and the previous default device isn't available anymore, the viewer automatically switches to the new default device (depends on the OS which gets the new default one!). Selecting a particular device will NOT automatically switch to another device if it isn't available anymore (preferences will show “Unavailable device”), but will switch back to this device once it becomes available again.

Media Tab

  • Allow Media to Auto-Play: With this enabled, video will play automatically (not recommended).
  • Allow inworld scripts to play media: Will allows scripts to automatically start media (not recommended).
  • Play media attached to other avatars: Enables media attached to other avatars (media on a prim).
  • Enable media filter (increased security): This will let you control what media stream you connect to, allowing you to whitelist or blacklist any media stream. See this page for more information.
    • Manage Media Sites (button): Allows you to edit your whitelist Domains and blacklist Domains by Adding and Removing from either category. More information is here.
  • Media source volume rolloff distance:
    • Starts getting quieter at: This controls when a sound source will start to fade out.
    • Completely disappears at: This controls when a sound source will be no longer audible.

Music Tab

  • Allow audio streams to auto-play: With this enabled, streaming music will play automatically (not recommended).
  • Enable Parcel Audio Fading: Check this if fading should be used when the parcel audio stream changes.
    • Fade in: duration of the fade in seconds.
    • Fade out: duration of the fade effect in seconds.
  • Show stream title notifications: For audio streams that supply this information, the song title will be shown. Can be set to:
    • Off
    • Toasts
    • Nearby Chat
      • Send stream title to chat channel: Lets you choose what channel the viewer uses for the above option.

Voice Tab

  • Enable Voice: Check here to enable voice.
    • Reset Voice (Circular arrow): If you have problems getting voice to work, try clicking this to reset the vocie software. Should that not help, refer to this page.
  • Allow Voice in multiple viewer instances simultaneously: Enable this if you want voice capability in multiple instances of Firestorm.
  • Hear Voice from Camera Position: Voices closer to your camera position appear louder.
  • Hear Voice from Avatar Position: Voices closer to your avatar position appear louder.
  • Move avatar lips when speaking: (aka “lip sync”) Will cause you to see avatars' lips moving when they speak in voice.
  • Show voice visualizers over avatars: Enable this to display a white dot over avatars who have voice enabled.
  • Show voice visualizers in calls: Show voice indicator and move avatar lips while in a private call.
  • Show voice channel state in conversation tabs: Indicate, in conversation tabs, when people have voice enabled.
  • Automatically reject all incoming group voice calls: Enable this to automatically decline group voice chat.
  • Automatically reject all incoming AdHoc (conference) voice calls: Enable to automatically decline voice conference calls.
  • Automatically reject all incoming P2P (avatar with avatar) voice calls: Enable to automatically decline person to person voice calls.
  • Toggle speak on/off when I press: Clicking the Set Key button allows you to assign a button on your keyboard to toggle voice.
  • Audio Device Settings (button): Opens a section where you can choose your input and output as well as adjust the mic volume. You will be disconnected from in-world voice while this is open. To close simply click the button again.

Note: The Nearby Chat tab has an indicator showing the status of Local voice:

  • Green = Voice is working;
  • Red = Voice tried to connect, but encountered an error;
  • Yellow = Voice is not connected.

UI Sounds 1

Here, you can change sounds played when specific “events” happen (for example, the sound played when you get a new IM). You can also chose to disable (or re-enable) sounds on a case by case basis.

To change a sound, locate the “event” you are interested in (example: Taking Snapshot), then paste in the UUID of the sound you wish to use. To obtain the UUID of a sound in your inventory, right click on it and select Copy UUID.
Note that the sound clip needs to be full permissions in order for you to be able to obtain the UUID.)

If you wish to restore the default value, click the D button to the right of the UUID.

The drop down to the far right of each line allows you to enable or disable each sound.

See here for a video describing this.

UI Sounds 2

This tab continues the previous one, with more “event” alert sounds you can change.

UI Sounds 3

This tab continues the previous one, with even more “event” alert sounds you can change.

Translating Firestorm

This page gives an outline of how to go about translating Firestorm into another language. This applies to the viewer itself, not the help files (wiki).

For simplicity it focuses only on the 'Firestorm' skin (theme is irrelevant).

When the viewer starts, it loads to memory all XML files from the default, English folder: https://vcs.firestormviewer.org/phoenix-firestorm/files/tip/indra/newview/skins/default/xui/en - interface layout and all necessary strings.

If the language selected by user is something other than English, let's say Polish, the viewer tries to find a file in skins/default/xui/pl with the same name as English one, and replace found attributes and values in memory, on the fly, with the ones in the localization folder. Note “attributes and values” - the viewer is not replacing whole files. Quick example:

Basic English localization has a lot of tags, which are not needed in the localization itself. In fact, the most often used in non-English ones are only “label”, “tool_tip” and “name” (the latter to assign elements properly).

The viewer doesn't have “a list of strings”, but around 400 files in XML language, which need to be created and translated.

Changes from version to version (release to release) are usually not very drastic ones (https://vcs.firestormviewer.org/phoenix-firestorm/_search?type=commit&sort=desc%3Adate&q=translation%2A&max_lines=10), but the initial amount of workload can take around 2-3 weeks of 6-7 hours of constant work. Maintaining already created translation is not that hard.

At the beginning there is no direct repository access. You must to know how to create a patch in diff format, preferably using TortoiseGIT (GIT system client), and attach it to our JIRA bug reporting system: https://jira.firestormviewer.org/browse/FIRE-21006?jql=issuetype%20%3D%20Translation%20AND%20text%20~%20%22translation%20update%22

The biggest issue is to be able to fit all these strings into size-limited fields in UI. You can't say “hey, I'd like to make this space bigger” - you must fit there with your strings. For example, open Phototools floater, both in English and a different language, and you'll see a lot of shortened strings everywhere.

The recommended editor for this work is Notepad++, with Unix line endings, in UTF-8 format without BOM.

IMPORTANT: In some places, you will find placeholder templates; for example: [SECONDS] These will always be enclosed in square brackets and in upper case. These should be left alone, as the viewer will replace the text at run-time. Some placeholders are visibile in the image below.

The “XUI preview tool”, available on the login screen after pressing CTRL + T, can be helpful in quick changes, without the need to shutdown and start the viewer again: Login screen → Debug menu at the top → XUI Preview Tool (Ctrl-Alt-D to enable the Debug menu, if it is not visible). In the image, the arrow is showing which language is the chosen one, with English as the default one.

Bonus note: If you'd like to see how does the process of translation review looks like, and get few tips about translating / formatting as well, then please read comments on this JIRA: FIRE-21006

Firestorm Gateway for New Residents

The Firestorm Gateway is a Community Gateway for new residents coming into Second Life where we provide a safe and welcoming learning environment. Help is freely given for users on any viewer by our Gateway Helper volunteers.

New Helper Applicants are required to have been in Second Life for at least 1 year and go through a process that includes filling out an application (which requires some knowledge of the Gateway regions and basic knowledge of second life) and following through a series of steps and training. The final step would be an interview with the Gateway HR Manager at which time both sides would discuss and determine if being a volunteer helper is right for you. If both sides agree at this point you would become a member of the Firestorm Gateway Team.

Previous Gateway Helpers that have left the team for any reason: If you have been gone longer than 6 months or more you will need to start the process over again and reapply. If you have been gone for 3 - 6 months, you will need to contact the Gateway HR Manager about coming back. If you are accepted back this will likely include a brief interview and a retake of part of your helper training. If you have been gone under 3 months and are accepted back, you can begin as a helper again after reading through any changes that have been made in your absence.

Applications for Helper at the Firestorm Gateway are in the Social Building on Firestorm Social Island. Go inside the building into the Resource room and look for the little red mail box. The box with Applications is beside it, touch to receive one. Applications can be dropped in the red mail box when completed.

Movement Issues

My Avatar Can't Move

If you can turn in circles but not move forward/backwards, you probably have Movelock enabled.

  • Go to the Avatar menu→ Movement submenu and make sure Movelock is not ticked.
  • See Movelock info for more information or if you are unable to change the Movelock setting.

However, there are a few other things to try:

  • Go to a different region and see if you are able to move there. If so, something at your original location is causing the problem.
  • If you are using a LAQ mesh head, make sure you don't have the Pose feature turned on.
  • Make sure you don't have some other HUD with a pose feature. (For instance, one user has reported this problem with the Lelutka Axis face HUD.)
  • If you can't find what attachment is causing the problem, try going to Advanced menu (Ctrl-Alt-D ) → Release Keys.
    • Note: Release Keys will be greyed out if RLV has locked any of your attachments. To disable RLV, go to Prefs → Firestorm → Extras, untick the top item, and then relog.
  • Make sure you don't have the Firestorm pose stand active.
    • If you have the Pose Stand button on your toolbar, make sure it's not “on.”
    • If you don't have the button, go to Avatar menu → Toolbar Buttons, drag the Pose Stand button out to your toolbar, and make sure it's not “on.”

You can control the MoveLock behavior in Firestorm 4.6.5 and newer via PreferencesMove & ViewMovement:

  • Always re-lock position after region changes > When enabled, MoveLock is disabled during teleport, then re-enabled it after you arrive. When disabled, MoveLock is not re-enabled after a teleport
  • Lock and unlock position after stopping or starting movement > When enabled, MoveLock is temporarily disabled when you manually move your avatar, and re-enabled when you stop moving. When disabled, you will be unable to move your avatar while MoveLock is enabled.

Also in PreferencesFirestormExtras, at the bottom, is Enable LSL-Client Bridge. This must be enabled in order to use MoveLock.

My Avatar Is Stuck in an Animation

  • Tap your PageDn key and see if the animation stops. If it does, you were in crouch.
  • Try Avatar menu → Avatar Health → Stop Animations & Revoke Permissions.
  • Try right clicking your avatar → Reset Skeleton & Animations.
  • If the above items did not work, go to a different region and try them again.
  • If you have the animation in your inventory, play it from inventory, then click Stop.
  • Remove attachments one by one until the animation stops. (This will eliminate worn items as a cause.)
    • Note: Animations can be in ANY attachment. Please don't assume that any particular attachment is not the problem. Take them all off.
    • Note: Attachments are anything with a box icon. Look in Inventory → Current Outfit folder to see all your attachments.
  • Make sure the Firestorm AO is off:
    • On the AO button on your toolbar, untick the checkbox.
    • Note: The Firestorm AO can be active even if the button is not on your toolbar. If it is not on your toolbar, go to Avatar menu → Toolbar Buttons, drag the AO button out onto your toolbar, and make sure it is not ticked.
  • If you know that a “sittable” item gave you the animation:
    1. Go to Preferences → Firestorm → Protection → Revoke Permissions.
    2. Temporarily set this to “Revoke on Sit and Stand.”
    3. Sit on the item, then stand. This should stop the animation.
    4. Change Preferences → Firestorm → Protection → Revoke Permissions back to either “Never” or “Revoke on Stand.”
  • Try Advanced menu → Release keys. (After doing this, you will need to recreate the FS bridge: Avatar → Avatar health → Recreate LSL Bridge.)

Furniture or Pose Ball Does Not Animate Me

  • You may simply be experiencing lag: See Troubleshooting Lag for tips to reduce this.
  • Many pose balls will request permission to animate you. If you did not see the animation request, look in your Notifications window for the message. Click “Accept.”
  • Make sure you have not blocked the item or its owner: Look in Comm menu → Block List, see if the item or the item's owner is there, and remove the item/person from the block list.
  • Go to Preferences → Firestorm → Protection → Revoke Permissions. For normal use, this should be set to either “Normal” (no protection) or “Revoke on Stand.” It should normally NOT be set to “Revoke on Sit” or “Revoke on Sit and Stand,” as both of these will prevent items from animating you when you are sitting.

Mousewalk Doesn't Work

Remove all attachments, then add one by one, testing in between to see if one causes the problem.

The TMP “Legacy” body HUD is known to cause this problem. Turn off the cam control located on the HUD.

My Avatar Is Rubber-Banding

“Rubber-banding” is when you try to walk forward and then suddenly snap back to a previous position. Sometimes you will seem unable to stop walking. This is caused by region lag, when the server can't keep up with processing avatar movement (collisions).

  • For info about region lag see here: Region Lag
  • For some things that region or parcel owners can do to reduce region lag see here: Reducing Server Lag.

My Avatar Slides When Trying to Walk, but No Animation Is Playing

This typically happens when you have two or more conflicting AOs (animation overriders) on.

  • Start by removing known AOs until you are wearing only one known AO.
  • If that doesn't help, start by removing other HUDs, then all other attachments, one by one, until it stops. Any worn item can contain an animation, so don't assume that some items are “ok.”
  • Note: Attachments are anything with a box icon. Look in Inventory → Current Outfit folder to see all your attachments.

My Avatar Keeps Spinning

  • Try turning the opposite direction to the spin.
  • Try pressing BOTH right and left arrow keys at the same time, repeatedly.
  • Relog.

My Avatar Jerks When Changing Animations

  • Remove other attachments that contain animations.
  • Remove or turn off ankle-locks.

My Avatar Is Floating a Few Meters Above the Ground

This is a possible bridge problem: recreate bridge by going to Avatar menu → Avatar Health → Recreate LSL Bridge.

My Avatar Goes Forever Upward

This is a possible bridge problem: recreate bridge by going to Avatar menu → Avatar Health → Recreate LSL Bridge.

My Head Keeps Moving Even When "Head Follows Mouse" Sliders Are Set to Zero

For unknown reasons, some users need to change an additional setting:

Go to Preferences → Privacy → Lookat, and tick “Don't send any look at targets at all, even to myself”

I Am Stuck Running

  • In most cases, pressing Ctrl-R to toggle run mode will get you back into walk (though it may in some cases be necessary to hit Ctrl-R more than once).
  • If you are wearing a scripted AO (animation overrider), turn off any “running” features it has.
  • If you are using the Firestorm built-in AO (animation overrider), make sure there are no running animations in the “Walking” or “Standing” categories.

After Strafe

Ref. BUG-6825

In one specific case, the above will not work. Specifically:

  • You have Preferences → Move & View → Movement → Tap-tap-hold to run enabled.
  • Press shift, then tap-tap-hold the left or right arrow key

That gets you running sideways. If you release shift before the arrow key, you will be stuck running.

To stop running, you have to repeat the sequence: press shift, then tap-tap-hold left or right arrow.

I Can't Get My Lips to Stop Moving

  • Go to Preferences → Sound & Media → Voice, and deselect “Move Avatar Lips When Speaking.” Note: This is the only viewer feature that affects lip movement.
  • If you are wearing a mesh head, turn off any animations in the head. For more help, ask the support group for that head.
  • Go to Comm menu → Gestures. Tick “Active only” at the bottom of the window. Review the list for any gestures that might contain a face animation. If in doubt, turn them all off, one at a time, to find the one responsible for the lip movement.

When Standing Up from a Groundsit, I Start Running

This is a known SL bug also affecting the SL viewer. Refer to this SL bug report for more information.

My Head Bobs After I Type

This happens if you turn off this setting: Preferences → Chat → Typing → “Play typing animation when chatting.”

* To stop the head-bobbing, go to Preferences → Chat → Visuals, and disable “Play avatar animations (such as shouting).”

Note: If you can't get your avatar to stop typing, see Turning Off Typing.

Firestorm Gateway Helper Application

Welcome to the Firestorm Gateway Team application process. We are looking for helpful and mature people who are interested in helping new users have a good experience in Second Life. If you know about Firestorm and the Firestorm Gateway Regions, you probably know that all our team members are volunteers who contribute their time without compensation. Special computer knowledge is not required, only a desire to get involved and the ability to help others to learn! Once again, this application is for the Firestorm Gateway Helpers only and is NOT for the Firestorm Viewer Support.

Please fill out the application in full. Every question needs an answer. If you leave any answer blank, the form will reset and you will have to start over. If you have no answer for a question, type none or not applicable.

However, we are interested in hearing your thinking process. If you don't know the answer, don't panic! :) Please describe anything you do know about the situation, or how you might go about finding an answer, or what you think it might be related to. Showing a productive approach to problem-solving is more important than having the “right” answers.

All information given here will be kept confidential.

NOTE: ALL FIRESTORM STAFF ARE UNPAID. You're applying for a VOLUNTEER position, not a job.

Firestorm Gateway Helper Application

Helper Applicant Requirements:

  1. Your avatar (or an alt) has to have been active in second life for at least one year.
  2. Ability to adapt yourself to the General Rating at the Firestorm Gateway Regions in both dress code and profile.
  3. Time requirement for Gateway volunteers is 2 hours per week. (You can certainly do more if your time frame permits).

General Information

(Your email will not be given out to anyone)

About You
O S R N F

New Helper Applicants go through a process that includes filling out this application (which requires basic knowledge of second life) and following through on a series of steps and training. We will be holding information sessions for those of you who have shown interest to explain those steps. Notification of times and places will be sent to you, please allow some time for contact as we expect there could be a fair number of applications to go through.

You are welcome to visit the Firestorm Gateway Regions at any time to familiarize yourself with the different areas that we offer to help new residents.

NOTE AGAIN: ALL FIRESTORM STAFF ARE UNPAID. You're applying for a VOLUNTEER position, not a job.

Thank you for your interest in the Firestorm Gateway Helpers.

Firestorm Gateway Scifi/Roleplay Helper Application

The Scifi Portal is a Roleplay and Scifi area set up on the Firestorm gateway to introduce new members SL residents to these aeras in Second Life. We try to maintain various SciFi Roleplays, activities and environments. At present this includes things like Space Station Roleplay, Star Trek Roleplay, Generic Spaceport Roleplay, Workouts at a Space Gym, Scifi Combat. We also have facilities for Dr Who RP and a Smaller Spaceship Roleplay (possibly smugglers, etc).

We are looking for Roleplay regulars and also RP leaders. Remember the goal of this is to introduce new-to-SL residents to Scifi RP and help them connect with existing groups.

In addition, we also are looking for non-RP SciFi enthusiasts to conduct one-on-one or small group scifi activities with new residents (such as tours of starship and/or space station, lessons on how to fly a shuttle, holodeck instruction, table games at Callhan’s Bar, etc).

Firestorm’s Scifi Portal staff all start out as volunteers, to demonstrate both ability and long-term commitment. So you would begin as a Volunteer with the possibility of being invited onto the Firestorm Team at a future date.

All information given here will be kept confidential.

NOTE: ALL FIRESTORM STAFF ARE UNPAID. You're applying for a VOLUNTEER position, not a job.

Please provide a bit of information for us.

About You
Z I O᠎ D F

This application is the first step in the process. Someone will contact you within a couple of weeks (hopefully sooner) for follow-on and more in-depth discussion, where we can answer you questions and determine how you will best fit in with our team/project.

Remember, everyone starts as a volunteer. There is no guarantee you will be invited to the team. That will depend on your ability to work effectively with new residents in this area, on how dedicated and reliable you demonstrate yourself to be, and how well you fit in with the existing team/values. Also, please be aware that once a person is invited onto the Firestorm Team, they still remain a volunteer. ALL FIRESTORM STAFF ARE UNPAID.

Thank you for your interest in helping with the Firestorm Gateway Scifi Portal.

Firestorm Gateway SciFi Portal

Did you know that many first time visitors to SL are interested in SciFi and/or Roleplay? Because of that, the Firestorm Gateway has developed a SciFi Portal. The portal provides explorers with the following:

  • An interesting SciFi environment to explore and interact with
  • A Weapons Range and Combat Area
  • A place to either observe or join in SciFi RolePlay
  • HUD-driven quests to allow a person to complete a series of tasks as a space station security guard or as a starship engineer.
  • A place for new-to-SL and new-to-RP individuals to get free SciFi uniforms, skins or whole avatars so that they can create their own SciFi look.

Also, we are actively looking for volunteers and future staff. Serving as an official Scifi Portal often (but not always) leads to an invitation to join the Firestorm Team. If you are interested in finding out more about volunteering, please Click Here

Explore the SciFi Portal

Do you love SciFi and also love to explore? The SciFi portal can keep you busy for hours and hours. There is a large Trek Starship (the USS Gateway), a generic scifi spaceship (the Epsilon) and a huge space station (ISS Tempus). You can visit a working holodeck, fly a shuttle in open space, work out in the station's gym (stocked with interactive exercise equipment), have a drink at Callahan's bar, play poker or greedy, dance on a futuristic dance floor, pilot a Federation Starship, etc. There is also a tutorial section for those new to RP, and two supply decks. You can get uniforms on the Starship Supply Deck, and Scifi Avatars and/or Alien skins on the station supply deck (located on the lower level of Callahans bar.)

Get started at the SciFi Portal: SciFi Portal

Once you arrive, find the sign that says “Click here to select a SciFi Destination.” Choose your destination from a pulldown menu, and *poof* you will be there.

Here is a video of someone exploring it… just to give you an idea:

Firestorm Gateway Combat Area and Shooting Range

This area may appeal to the new-to-SL people who come from a gaming background. The combat aspects of SL is rather similar to video games. It may also appeal to seasoned SL veterans.

We offer self-attaching raycast weapons that allow you to shoot in our no-rez combat area. You simply click the weapons supply locker, and both a weapon and a health meter will attach. They will auto-detach if you leave the SciFi portal area, and can also be manually detached.

There are two combat areas, the Combat Range and the Combat Zone.

The Combat Range is for avatar's to battle non-avatars. It is divided into four levels, with a colored circle in each area. If you enter the circle and wait up to 30 seconds, hostiles will rez and begin firing at you. The Beginner Level is relatively simple and an excellent starting place for those new to combat/weapons. There is also a shooting range in the beginner area, for target practice or getting used to firing the weapon. Each level progresses in difficulty, and expert level is difficult enough that some seasoned combat veterans find it challenging.

The Combat Zone is a place for avatars to battle other avatars. It uses the same weapons and has a large battle area divided into multiple rooms with a few barriers to hid behind, ramps to run up/down, etc. There are two “team circles” if you choose to use them, located on opposite corners of the combat zone area.

Here are the SLurls:

Firestorm Gateway Roleplay

There is so much to be said about the Roleplay that it has its own page. Please see Firestorm Gateway Roleplay for more details.

SciFi Portal Quests

A quest is an adventure where you have to complete a series of tasks. (They are also a great way to get a self-guided tour of either the Starship or the Space Station.)

The quests are on a terminal on the wall just to the right of the transporter. You can choose between the following

  • Starship Quest - This allows you to be an engineer on the Trek Starship, USS Gateway. You will be given a series of engineering challenges to complete that move you around the Starship. This quest usually takes 15-20 minutes to complete.
  • Station Quest - This allows you to be a security guard on patrol of the station. You will have to deal with issues such as feeding prisoners detained in the brig, dealing with contraband and stolen supplies. You will also have to patrol much of the station, getting a great tour of this large station. This quest usually takes about 1/2 hour to complete.

The Quest HUD

The quests use a HUD. You can get the HUD from the dispenser in the SciFi Portal. Here are the instructions for using the HUD:

1. Touch the Quest HUD Giver sign for the HUD.

2. Find the HUD in inventory and wear.

3. When you are prompted for permission for this quest to Attach To Your Avatar, say “YES”

4. The HUD will be a red oval on your viewscreen near the top center. Text instructions from it will display above the HUD and also in local chat.

5. Left touch HUD and select “Start Quest”

6. A submenu will appear. Select the quest listed in the submenu.

7. Watch the hud for instructions. If you miss something, you can find it in local chat as well.

Free SciFi Outfits and Accessories

Firestorm Gateway has three rooms of freebies for new-to-SL people to create a SciFi look. (Existing SL Residents who are new to SciFi exploration and/or RP may also find these supplies useful.)

Space Station Supply Deck

Two of these rooms are on the Lower Promenade deck of the space station, and they contain generic supplies for both male and female avatars. This includes things like complete robot or alien avatars, alien hairs, and alien skins. The other room contains a a few SciFi outfits (both male and female).

Here is the SLurl to the space station supply rooms:

Star Trek Supply Deck

There is a supply deck on the starship, accessible from the turbolift. It contains Firestorm's free Trek uniforms and civilian garb. Each uniform is classic avatar clothes plus omega appliers. (Sorry, but you will need to supply your own boots or shoes.) A Trek-style Firestorm combadge (decorative and worn on chest) is also available there.

Here is the SLurl to the Trek-style free uniforms:

Firestorm Viewer Modes

At the Firestorm log in screen, next to the log In button, is a drop down menu, which allows you to select the default viewer mode. These can be one of:

  • Phoenix
  • Firestorm
  • Hybrid
  • Viewer 6
  • Latency
  • Text

This allows you to select the overall “look and feel” of the viewer. Text mode disables almost all rendering; it exists for those who need to get inworld on very low end computers.

NOTE: This will affect many settings but none that you have set yourself. In other words, if you log in with (for example) Phoenix mode, but then change one of the default settings to what would be Viewer 6 mode, that will remain set next time.

Bakes on Mesh

IMPORTANT: We cannot, and will not, provide support for specific products. For those, please ask in the support group for the mesh body/head you use, or if no group exists, contact the maker.

Introduction

In essence, Bakes on Mesh (BoM) allows you to “wear” system skins, tattoos and clothing on mesh avatars. It achieves this by “baking” these system layers onto the mesh. More details on this and how to use BoM has been amply covered elsewhere.

FAQ

I See People with Strange Colored Splotches

If you have not yet updated to the BoM-capable version of Firestorm, then people using BoM will appear, to you, to have solid colored bodies with text on them, or splotches of color. You will need to update the viewer to see them properly. Firestorm viewers versions up through 6.2.4 do not support BoM.

Does My Mesh Body/Head Support BoM?

Have a look here or contact the creator.

My Mesh Body/Head Doesn't Support BoM - What Do I Do?

You can continue to use appliers as you did before; there is no requirement to migrate to BoM. However, if you wish to use BoM, ask in the product support group or contact the maker of the body/head to ask how you might use BoM with their product.

My Mesh Body/Head Supports BoM. Can I Wear Any System Skin?

In theory, yes. In practice, however, the body/head UV map (i.e., the “layout” of the skin) may not be a perfect match, and you may see stretching. In particular, you may have problems with the hands, feet, and finger- and toenails.

Many skin makers are reissuing skins, and making new skins, in BOM versions for various mesh bodies/heads. A BOM skin made for one brand of head/body may not work on another brand of head/body. Look for “BOM” and your mesh brand on the product, or ask the creator. Always try demos before buying!

Can I Continue to Use Appliers?

Maybe… it all depends on the body. Some BoM-compatible bodies may remove the onionskin layers. So for this, contact the support group to ask.

Why Is My Mesh Body All Red?

You are probably still wearing an alpha layer; with some BoM products, this will make your avatar red. Remove the alpha layer.

My Head/Body Goes Invisible

Make sure to remove any alpha layer you are wearing. Some heads/bodies will go red when you wear an alpha layer (see above), some will go invisible or have transparent areas.

If you have a product where this kind of transparency works, you can use custom alpha layers to make parts of your mesh body/head invisible. This can be used instead of, or in addition to, HUDs that make sections transparent.

Please consult your mesh product support group for information on how their product works.

Music and Media Issues

This section covers issues related to audio, video and some aspects of search.

General

  • For situations where you cannot hear audio, be it streaming music, or the audio from a movie/video, the first thing to do is check the following:
    • Windows users: see this page.
    • Make sure streaming music and/or media are enabled in PreferencesSound & Media -> Sounds.
    • In the same place, check that volumes for music and media are not at minimum.
    • Make sure audio is configured correctly in your operating system (i.e., Windows, linux, OSX), that sound is going to the correct device (i.e., speakers or headset), and so on. This may require you to adjust settings in your sound mixer, volume mixer, and/or other similar software.
    • Confirm that you have not blocked the stream/video: open Preferences → Sound & Media → Media → Manage Media Sites and see if the problem URL is listed there; if so, remove it.
    • For streaming music, test the music URL in your external web browser, to make sure that the URL actually works.
  • If you have plugged in a USB sound device, you may need to relog so that the viewer can use it.
  • HTTP fetching may be overloading your router; please try the suggestions given here; if they do not help, revert the changes made then return to this page and continue.
  • The Dullahan Plugin (for those who have questions): Dullahan is a headless browserSDK that uses the Chromium Embedded Framework (CEF). In addition to playing media, Dullahan is also used for:
    • Websearch
    • Web profiles
    • Built-in browser
    • Splash Screen when the viewer is launched
    • Media-based HUDs
    • Avatar Menu - Choose an Avatar
    • Destination Guide
    • Wiki Help pages (when clicking the ? in a floater)

Videos or Music Don't Play at All

  • Relog Firestorm and open the Search window
  • Go to your computer processes and look for “slplugin.exe”
    • For Windows users, go to Task Manager → Processes Tab
    • For Mac users, go to Activity Monitor → My Processes (usually by default, but you can check top right drop down)
    • For Linux users, go to Command Terminal, and type “ps aux”
    • You may see four instances of the slplugin running (that is normal behavior)
    • If you do not see any instances of slplugin running, that is the cause of media failing
  • If slplugin is not running, disable all firewall and virus protection (including anti-virus software and windows or other operating system firewalls). Do this check also for dullahan_host.exe.
  • Relog and attempt video playback again
  • If it works, you will need to stop your firewall/virus protection from blocking the slplugin and/or dullahan_host.exe files by granting appropriate permissions in your firewall/virus protection software
  • NOTE: If you have several viewers installed, you will have to allow to each one access through your firewall, as well as to SLPlugin and dullahan_host.exe for each one.
  • If all of the above does not resolve the issue, you can try downloading the latest SL Viewer and replacing your Firestorm slplugin file with the one from SL Viewer.

Videos Are Not Playing, or Black/Blank Search Page

  • In Preferences → Sound & Media → Sounds, make sure the “Enabled” checkbox to the right of the “Media” slider is checked
    (For audio, check “Streaming Music”)
  • In Preferences → Sound & Media → Media, check “Allow inworld scripts to play media”
  • In Preferences → Network & Files -> Connection, make sure the Maximum Number of Web Browser Windows dropdown is set to Five, Ten or Unlimited
  • Make sure the issue is not with the specific television you are using, by attempting to view videos on a television that plays video normally for other Firestorm users.
  • Make sure that “Enable plugins” is ticked in Preferences → Network & Files -> Connection, else the external media plugin can not be executed, and you may see a message saying: Adobe Flash Player or an HTML5 supported browser is required for video playback.

TV and Videos Are Not in Sync Between 2 or More People Watching

In-world videos (on TVs and Prim Media, a.k.a. Media-on-a-Prim) are independent streams from the source to each person watching. The only way to synchronize them is for each person to click Play at the exact same time, and even then the streams can get out of sync depending on lag, connection, buffering, and other network & computer issues.

If you have Parcel Media rights, Parcel Media is an alternative. Like a music stream, it will generally be sync'd for everyone watching (World menu > Parcel Details > Media tab). Click the ? at the top of the Media tab page or see here for more information on how to configure Parcel Media.

Embedded MP4

Embedded MP4s no longer are supported by Second Life. Consult your TV maker to determine if they use this format. Refer to BUG-224979, as well as this blog post.

Flash

Please read https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/help/4520411/adobe-flash-end-of-support before considering installing flash. Flash has a LONG history of very serious security issues. If someone is providing content that only works with flash, please contact them and let them know that flash will be end of life in the near future, this means there will be NO security updates from the vendor beyond that point. Nobody should be forcing flash on anyone in this day and age, it is 2020, not 2001 anymore. If you want to take the risk, read ahead….

The Flash plugin is not installed with Firestorm; you have to install it yourself. However, you need specific plugin versions:

  • Windows users:
    • In order to play Flash format videos (e.g., YouTube videos), you must have the Opera & Chromium version of the Adobe Flash plugin installed. Unless you already have this specific version of Flash installed already, you will need to get the Opera & Chromium Flash plugin from Adobe.
  • Linux users
    • You need to have the pepperflash plugin installed, which can be satisfied by installing pepperflashplugin-nonfree for Chromium
  • Mac users
    • Mac users currently need the Safari & Firefox version of Adobe Flash plugin installed. Download it from Adobe.
  • All users: Test your Flash
    • To make sure you have successfully installed the correct version of Flash and that it is working, use the in-world Flash game to test it.
      • Open the Developer menu: CTRL-Alt-Q. (Close this after testing; it's best not to leave this menu open.)
      • Then type CTRL-SHIFT-Z to open the internal browser.
      • Once the browser loads, click the Home icon in the upper left of the browser window.
      • Click the Media tab, at top.
      • Click “Flash game.”
      • A bubble-shooter game should load.
  • NOTE: If you experience graphics driver crashes on nVidia cards when viewing Flash media (for example Youtube) both in-world and on a website and/or severe drops in your GPU clock mhz on any card then you will need to disable hardware acceleration on Flash Player. To do this, go to Youtube and Pick any video. Right click the video play area to bring up the options and follow the instructions here.

QuickTime

QuickTime is no longer needed for Windows users (and never was for linux users). Mac users, however, still need to have it.

YouTube

  • If YouTube videos suddenly will not play, and you just get a white screen, go to PreferencesPrivacy -> General, and click on Clear History, then try again.
  • See also the Flash section, above.

I Hear No Music or Sound from Movies

Go to PreferencesSound & Media -> Sounds and make sure the volume sliders for streaming music and media are not all to the left and that there is no mute symbol (red no entry sign) on the speaker icon next to those. Make sure the Master Volume is not all to the left.

Check that Sound Source rolloff distance (Media tab) is correct; set back to default, if you changed it (5m and 30 respectively for min and max).

I Hear No In-world Sounds Apart From Streaming Music and Voice

1) Check viewer settings

  • Go to PreferencesSound & Media -> Sounds and check that you have the Sounds and UI sliders up high enough and that there is no mute symbol (red no entry sign) on the speaker icon next to those.

2) Check your audio drivers

  • Look in Help menu → About Firestorm for the line that begins with “Audio Driver Version.” If that line says “Undefined,” reboot your computer and see if the Audio Driver Version appears.
  • If this doesn't help:

Audio "Skipping"

Go to the top menu bar→ Advanced → Use Plugin Read Thread, and disable it, if it is enabled - or vice versa. (If you cannot see Advanced on the top menu, press Ctrl-Alt-D.)

If that doesn't help, first ensure that you have your bandwidth set correctly. Also, test the audio stream in your regular media player, and/or try a different audio stream in-world.

Audio "Fading"

If the music volume fades as you cam around or edit objects, check the sound equalization settings in your operating system. For example, this may be caused by “Loudness equalization” being enabled in your speaker properties on Windows 7. (Refer to https://jira.firestormviewer.org/browse/FIRE-19885.)

Preferences - Sound & Media - Music - Enable Parcel Audio Fading - uncheck if checked. (reference for Support only https://jira.firestormviewer.org/browse/SUP-20376|SUP-20376).

"You have requested a file download which is not supported within Firestorm" error message

This error is due to Flash not being installed, or not installed correctly. See above.

"No media plugin was found to handle the 'text/html' mime type" error message

There are two possible causes:

  • Flash is not installed, or is not installed correctly. See Flash, above.
  • Your antivirus has deleted or mangled the plugin. See Antivirus Whitelisting for instructions on how to fix this.

By Operating System

Windows

If using a VEA4 TV, you get a “File could not be found” error, disable the IPv6 protocol in the Windows network adapter. Note that this is not recommended, but apparently is the only way to get this brand of TV to work.

If sound eventually cuts out on your computer while using Firestorm and the only way to get it back is to log off Firestorm, disable Audio Enhancement via the steps shown here. Another possibility is Loudness equalization; reference this JIRA.

Windows 10: If Firestorm sound disappears or lowers too far when using other voice/phone applications (such as Skype), right click your Sound icon → Sounds → Communications tab. Set this tab to “Do nothing.” NOTE: this will affect other applications on your computer, not just Firestorm.

Refer to this page for all Win10 issues.

Mac

Please ensure that you have the most recent version of Flash for Safari installed. You can get this via the normal update process, or from Adobe.

For streaming music on OS X 10.9 Mavericks, please refer to this page.

For users on Sierra, there are reports of media features (such as MOAP, TVs, web search, and web profiles) working more slowly. Ref. BUG-40552.

linux

Both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Firestorm for Linux require 32-bit libraries to function. See this page for a link to your Linux flavor to verify you have all the needed audio-related packages installed and to troubleshoot stream issues.

See this page for documentation on Firestorm 5.0.11 (53634) and earlier.
