Viewer Compiler Updates

Internal build update to VS2017 and Boost.Fiber. Because we had to rebuild all the component autobuild packages for the compiler upgrade, the project also subsumed the problem of migrating all our autobuild packages to git source repositories.

No user facing changes.

Derendering and Blacklisting

It is possible to make an object or avatar “invisible” - for you only. This is known as derendering. It is useful in many situations, such as photography, for example, if an object is in your view and you do not wish it in the picture.

To derender an object, right click it an select Derender from the menu. You may select temporary or permanent (blacklist) derendering. A general summary of these two types of derendering, and how to reverse them, is given here.

In order to reverse a permanent derender, you will need to open the Asset Blacklist, via the top menu bar→ World → Asset Blacklist.

Do not derender or blacklist an object you are sitting on. If you do, you will suddenly find youself in a corner of the region, still sitting, and without a “Stand” button; you will have to TP or relog to free yourself, and may still be stuck in the sit pose.

The Asset Blacklist Window

The Asset Blacklist window, shown above, lists all the items you have blacklisted. The list shows the name of the item, the type (object, sound, etc), and the date added, along with whether the derender is temporary or permanent.

  • Temporary derender lasts until until removed from the list, or you TP away and return, or you relog.
  • Permanent derender lasts until the item is removed from the list.

To remove an item from the blacklist, click on it, then click the Remove selected items from blacklist button.

Click on Clear Temporary to clearly any temporary derenders you may have done. Those items should them immediately re-render.

Derendering and How to Reverse It

It is possible to make an object or avatar “invisible” - for you only. It is useful in many situations, such as photography, for example, if an object is in your view and you do not wish it in the picture.

NOTE: There is a tutorial video on this topic here.

Blacklisting

This is permanent derender; it will survive teleports and relogging. For more information, see the Asset Blacklist.

  • To derender an object: Right click it and select Derender → Blacklist from the menu.
  • To rerender an object: From the top menu bar, select World → Asset Blacklist. Find the item you wish to remove, click it to highlight it, then click the Remove selected button. The item should reappear immediately (if in view, of course).

Temporary

Temporary derendering will last until a view change is forced in some way.

  • To derender an object: Right click it and select Derender → Temporary from the menu.
  • To rerender an object: From the top menu bar, select World → Asset Blacklist. Find the item you wish to remove, click it to highlight it, then click the Remove selected button. The item should reappear immediately (if in view, of course).
You may remove all temporarily derendered items in one go by clicking on Clear Temporary.

Note that in PreferencesMove & View -> View, there is Re-render temporary derendered objects after teleport, which controls whether temporarily derendered objects will re-render after TP or not until after a relog.

Notes

Attachments get new UUIDs every time they are reattached; therefore, derendering an attachment will only be effective until the wearer detaches the item.

Using Firestorm in Manjaro/Arch

NOTE: The steps here have not been rigorously tested, and therefore might not work for you.
NOTE: This process makes use of AUR, the build is not an official or supported product. You must make sure the build script is fetching Firestorm from our site and not from any other site.
The steps here apply to a typical installation of Manjaro 20 and may also apply to native Arch or other Arch-based systems.

Enable AUR

By far the simplest method requiring the fewest steps is to use the software manager, called Add/Remove Programs. Refer to this page for detailed steps if AUR is not already enabled.

Install Firestorm

Still in Add/Remove Programs, start typing firestorm. You will see at least one possible version. You want to install official release version, it generally shows the complete version number. Others may show a revision numberl; you don't want those. To be sure which version to select, refer to the version shown on the Linux Download page and make sure the version numbers match.

Click the desired entry – not the build button – and then on the left click the Build Files tab.

If you see a line that looks like

source=("https://downloads.firestormviewer.org/linux/Phoenix_Firestorm-Releasex64_x86_64_$pkgver.tar.xz"

Then you have the correct package selected. Click Build at the right, then the left arrow at the top left.

If you plan on using the Win32 voice files, you'll need to make sure WINE is installed. Search for WINE and click Install.

Now click the Apply button to install Firestorm (and optionally WINE).

Try It Out

Firestorm is installed for all users, so the binaries are in /opt/firestorm. A desktop launcher was created, and would be in your menu under Games.

Beta/Preview builds

No one has added or is maintaining any beta or preview builds on AUR. Fortunately, once you install from AUR, you can visit our site and download a beta or preview version, extract it where desired and run it, and it should work.

Troubleshooting

Crashing

If you crash continually, it will be helpful to get a backtrace, like so:

cd ~/Firestorm
sed -i "/^#export .*gdb/ s/^#//" ./firestorm # This enables gnu debug
./firestorm

At the (gdb) prompt, type r to launch Firestorm. When Firestorm crashes, you should be back at a (gdb) prompt.
Type bt to get a backtrace (there may be several pages, press Enter until you get the gdb prompt again). Copy everything from the terminal screen to a text file.
Type q to exit gdb.
Create a Support Request on our Jira and attach the backtrace as well as crash logs. JIRA can guide you through the process.

NOTE: You can turn off debugging with:

sed -i "/^export .*gdb/ s/^export/#export/" ./firestorm

Voice

Default Linux voice files function, but may not on your particular system. As a workaround, install wine and use the Windows 32-bit voice files:

sudo apt install wine-stable
winecfg #Set the Windows version to Windows 10, test audio output

Once WINE is configured to your satisfaction, launch Firestorm and log in, disable voice if necessary, then press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S to open Debug Settings. Search for FSLinuxEnableWin32VoiceProxy, set that to TRUE, then close Debug Settings. For good measure, relog, then enable and test voice.

Note that using WINE means there is a slight delay connecting to voice as the WINE system starts up. As well, WINE needs a little time to shut down when you disconnect voice. This may cause a race condition if you toggle voice, where a new connection tries to start before the previous one shuts down. This can affect both instances of WINE, and a relog may be required to restore voice functions.

OpenSim versions of Firestorm do not have Havok. That only matters if you're uploading mesh objects and need to specify the mesh physics properties, or if you need to manipulate the region navmesh for pathfinding. The terms of the Havok license prohibit its use anywhere but Second Life, so it's not present in OpenSim versions.
In order to be able to login to grids other than Second Life, you need to enable a setting. From the login screen, go to

Flash

Please read https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/help/4520411/adobe-flash-end-of-support before considering installing flash. Flash has a LONG history of very serious security issues. If someone is providing content that only works with flash, please contact them and let them know that flash will be end of life in the near future, this means there will be NO security updates from the vendor beyond that point. Nobody should be forcing flash on anyone in this day and age, it is 2020, not 2001 anymore.

  • Windows - Download in Firefox or Chrome to play Flash media inside Second Life.
Choose the correct operating system under Step 1.
Choose FP 32 for Opera & Chromium - PPAPI under Step 2.
    Install Flash.
  • Mac - Ensure that you have the most recent version of Flash for Safari installed. You can get this via the normal update process, or from Adobe.
Choose the correct operating system under Step 1.
Choose FP 32 for Safari and Firefox – NPAPI under Step 2.
    Install Flash.
  • Linux - You need to have the pepperflash plugin installed, which can be satisfied by installing Google Chrome.

Quicktime

  • Windows - Quicktime does not need to be installed to play media on Firestorm 5.0.1 or later.
  • Mac - Quicktime to play streaming videos. (iTunes is not needed)

GStreamer

FS AO Crash with Firestorm 6.3.9

NOTE: This affects only Firestorm 6.3.9.58205

This version of Firestorm has a bug in the AO code which will result in a crash in either of these situations:

  • logging out with the AO floater (window) open.
  • creating an AO set for the first time with this version of the viewer - if you already have one or more sets defined before updating, then you're fine.

There are two workarounds:

Method One

If you still have Firestorm 6.3.2 (or earlier) available:

  1. Log in with Firestorm 6.3.2 (or earlier) which is available here
  2. Open the Firestorm AO interface (the AO Toolbar button, at the bottom of your Firestorm window)
  3. If you don't normally use the Firestorm AO, delete all AO sets that are defined
  4. Otherwise, make sure that exactly one of your AO sets is marked as “Default”
  5. Close the AO window before logging out.

Method Two

  1. Log in with the Linden Lab Second Life viewer (other viewers may also work for this)
  2. Open your Inventory
  3. Navigate to your #Firestorm folder
  4. Open the #AO folder inside there
  5. If there are any empty folders under #AO, delete them
  6. If there are no folders left under #AO, you can stop here
  7. Otherwise, check if there is exactly one folder under #AO that ends in :** (for example, Female AO:**)
  8. If not, add the :** to the AO set that you normally use

After this, you should be able to log in with 6.3.9 once again.

Where Can I Get Good Free Stuff?

There are many ways of getting great free stuff in SL to make your avatar look fantastic! There are many landmarks on this page; a G, or M indicates if the region is rated General or Moderate. To go to these shops, click on the landmark, a new web page will open, then click on teleport.

Free Dove has lots of quality stuff- look around carefully when you are there, because they usually have “hunts” with gifts from very good designers - these will be in small boxes or objects hidden everywhere in the shop.

The Bazaar Linden-support free stuff place, which anyone can contribute to. Mostly older things, but still much that may be helpful in getting started in SL.

The Stay at Home Club: Started during the COVID-19 crisis, this sites lists places offering free items in a number of categories. Click here to visit the site, then on Gifts at the top.

You can find a lot of free stuff on the marketplace. A good idea is to include the word “gift” in your search. Some items you might find useful:

  • Female AO (to make your avi move naturally)
  • Skins: type “skin gift” in the search slot and you'll get quite a lot - mostly female but some for the boys too!

Most designers have a group for their shop, which they use to send people news about new releases and events - if you join their group you will get gifts, generally on a monthly basis, but sometimes more often. Sooo… when you visit a shop, look out for group gifts - there is usually a group joiner next to them, and clicking on it you get instructions in local chat how to join the group. Some groups have a join fee, sometimes quite expensive, but many are free. Also, you'll find lucky chairs and lucky boards - if your name starts with the letter displayed on them, you win the prize.

Some stores offer free items for the Residents new to Second Life, some with an age limit to be eligible to collect these gifts - eg:- Under 30 days of age.

  • Free hair pack to New Residents (2 weeks and younger) Just send a notecard with your name and hairstyle choice & color to * No Match Owner
No Match Store location :- * No Match Hair Store
  • Free clothing for men - Kauna (no age limit)
  • SEmotions free AO Bento - SEmotions (90 Days and younger)
  • TuTy's free AO Bento - TuTy's (no age limit)
  • Firelight free male & female hair - !! Firelight !! (some 30 days and younger, many free group gifts)
  • Amazing Creations free male & female clothing - AmAzInG CrEaTiOns (group gifts, free to join, no age limit)
  • JStyle free male & female clothing - jStyle (group gifts, free to join, no age limit)
  • WarBug HQ bizarre and questionable gadgets and accessories - WarBug HQ (no group required, no age limit)
  • Izzie's free makeup - Izzie's (no group required, no age limit)

Many others available please use your search.

Another good idea is to Join an Inworld freebie shopping group! Not only will you be kept updated with all the latest freebies, but you can also get help and support to find the shops you are looking for.

There are quite a few around, but this one is probably the most popular: (to join, right-click the “group joiner” below, select “Copy to Clipboard”, then paste it in local - then click on the link that will appear)
Group joiner

Some good blogs featuring a lot of freebies:

And last but not least, there are treasure hunts! These are a really fun way to find new places and shops and get awesome free stuff!

Hover Height

If you right click on your avatar name tag (or part of your avatar that is not an attachment), then select Appearance, then Hover Height, you will get a window. Via this window, you can set your hover height above the ground, via the slider, or by directly typing in numbers. This works whether you are standing, or sitting.

Affect Camera view. Enabling this setting adjusts your camera as you adjust your hover height. See Camera Controls.

This functionality is separate from, and replaces, the Hover setting in the avatar shape parameters. Ensure the Hover setting is default 50.

/zoffset_up and /zoffset_down have been added as chat commands
which can also be used inside user-definable gestures to adjust the z-offset of the avatar, e.g. CTRL-PGUP and CTRL-PGDN
/zoffset_reset chat command resets Hover Height to zero

Note: Hover Height is also included in Quick Preferences.

Environmental Enhancement Project

Introduction

The Environmental Enhancement Project (EEP) is an environment system that completely replaces Windlight. It is a complete rewrite of the previous Windlight code, so many things are done differently, and new features and capabilities have been added.

Unlike Windlight, EEP Presets (settings) are inventory assets. In other words, they “live” in your inventory, rather than as XML files on your hard drive. This makes it much easier to share them with friends, and yes, they can also be sold. The standard permission rules apply (i.e., copy, modify, transfer).

Many Windlight settings have been converted to EPP presets. You will find them in the Library folder of your inventory, under Environments. You can easily use any of these, as described in the next section. If you wish to modify any of them, you will first need to copy them to you main inventory; the default folder name for EEP presets is Settings, so it is recommended that you place them there. You should also create new EEP presets in that folder.

This page gives an overview of commonly used functions, and then gives links to further information.

Setting Your Own Sky

Quick Preferences button Many like to have their own sky set where ever they go in SL, and for that sky to persist. With EEP, this is quite straightforward. Click the QuickPrefs button (usually located on the bottom button bar, far right) shown to the left, and click on the WL Sky drop-down. Select any of the listed skies. This will apply automatically, and stick through teleports: it is set as your “Personal Lighting”.

If you want to change your sky, simply make a different selection the same way. If you want to modify your personal lighting, go to the top menu bar, World → Environment → Personal Lighting. Edit as desired.

In order to again see sky and water as set at specific locations, you will need to clear your personal lighting; do this by clicking the Reset button on this window.

Adding an EEP Preset to Your Parcel or Region

You can use an EEP day cycle on your own land, something that was not possible with Windlight (though you could set a fixed sky and water). Also, the day cycle is no longer constrained to 4 hours.

Adding a Preset to a Parcel

Go to top menu, World → Parcel Details → Environment. The quickest way is to use an existing day cycle, so click Use Inventory and select one.

NOTE: This panel wants a day cycle, not a sky or a water preset. However it is possible to have a day cycle that is nothing more than a fixed sky, if that's what you want.

You can also create a day cycle on the fly by clickingCustomize.

To revert to the region EEP, click Use Region Settings.

If a group member other than the owner needs to apply an environment to a parcel, assign the ability in the Group profile, Roles & Members→ Roles, under Parcel Settings - Modify environment settings and day cycle.

For details on this tab, refer here.

Adding a Preset to a Region

Go to top menu, World → Region details → Environment.

This panel works exactly the same way as the parcel one described above, except that changes apply to an entire region. Naturally, you need to be an estate owner or manager to change these settings.

For details, refer to this page.

Editing or Making Your Own EEP Presets

Since EEP presets are assets, you generally edit them from inventory, as you would edit, say, a notecard: find the preset, double click it. This opens the preset editor, and also applies the preset so you can see what you're doing.

Remember that presets in the Library cannot be edited, and need to first be copied to regular inventory.

To create a new EEP preset, right click any folder (but preferably use the Settings folder) → New Settings, then select Sky, Water or Day.

Another way to edit or make a preset is via top menu, World → My Environments. See here for information on that window.

Details of how to edit each type of preset is given on the following pages:

Importing Old Settings

Note: As stated previously, approximately 200 Windlight settings have already been imported and can be found in Library → Environments folder. They are also visible in Quick Preferences and can be selected there.

To import your other old Windlight settings into EEP:

  1. Create a new Settings item in inventory (right click Settings folder or a subfolder → New Settings → New Sky, Water, or Day Cycle).
  2. Open that new settings item.
  3. Select the Import button; this will open a file picker dialog.
  4. Navigate to where you have stored your Windlight XML files and select the file you would like to import:
    • Windows:
      • C:\Program Files\Firestorm_64\app_settings\windlight (old built-in Windlights)
      • C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\Firestorm_x64\user_settings\windlight (personalized custom files)
    • Mac
      • ~/Applications/Firestorm_64; right click > show package contents > Contents/Resources/windlight (old built-in Windlights)
      • ~/Library/Application Support/Firestorm/User Settings/Windlight (personalized custom files)

You should import Windlights of the same type as the editor you have open (Day Cycle, Sky, or Water). For example, to import a Sky, create and open a Sky setting from inventory. On your hard drive, you should find the files laid out as follows: ./windlight/days ./windlight/skies ./windlight/water.

Create/Edit Day Preset

This window can be accessed by going to the top menu bar and selecting World → Environment Editor → Day Presets → New preset or Edit Preset 1). The windows are almost the same, except that in Edit mode, you select an exiting preset to modify, while in Create mode, you supply a new name to use and start out with default values.

Create/Edit Day Preset

The day cycle editor allows you to completely change the normal day/night cycle skies. For various times of day, you may select skies of your choice from the supplied presets, or make your own skies with the sky editor. Note that others will not be able to see self-created skies unless you share them.

  • Timeline: Drag the downward-pointing arrow to change what the environment looks like at a given time. Nodes (the “bumps”) on the timeline are keyframes which you can drag to set. Each corresponds to a sky preset. As the time of day progresses, the sky “animates” as it interpolates between these keyframes.
  • Add Key: Creates a new keyframe at the the arrow's location. After setting a keyframe, you can change the Key Preset.
  • Delete Key: Deletes the currently-selected or last-selected node.
  • Sky Setting: Choose from the list of sky settings.
  • Time: Click the arrows to move the selected key.
  • Make this my new day cycle: Check to select this as your current day cycle.

Tentative Entertainment: 2 singers plus the Hawks (johnnynumberfive) air show – pay 5000L each

Tentative gift: not sorted out yet.. hope maybe we can get a head creator to do a gift. May also check with the VKC group

Contacts Made for gifts

Notecard to send to creators:

Hello. My name is Teresa Firelight and I am one of the Firestorm Managers. Jess Lyon asked me to contact you on her behalf.

We are getting ready for our 10 year anniversary party (tentative date is Oct 11, 2020). Historically we have had breeder gifts at this party… a joint effort between the creator and Firestorm. As we begin a new decade, we were hoping to change gears and partner with a mesh head creator to create a “Firestorm Edition Mesh BOM Head”, and we were wondering if you might be interested in partnering with us in this? It will give you massive exposure and valuable free advertising, as well as getting product into the hands of many who we believe will later become paying customers.

You would need to either create a Unisex head or offer both male and female heads – these can be simple limited edition stuff rather than you full product line if you like.. however remember that a lot of people will be trying it out and their impression of your brand will come from it. We can give you the firestorm logo if you would to use it to make a tattoo for the head, to make it seem “firestorm” themed. Typically gifts are given at our party and then for a week or two after it at the party location. You can also give them out at your store for as long as you like. And Jess Lyon would highlight the gift in her blog, which our Message Of the Day will point to.

If you are interested in partnering with firestorm on this, please get back to me ASAP. [I will insert my calling card here.]

Thank you so much for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Teresa Firelight on behalf of the Firestorm Team
