NOTE: This version of Firestorm is only being offered for MacOS. It should only be used in cases where more recent versions don't work well for you. But please note that, given the many changes in SL since 4.4.2 was released, 4.4.2 will be badly broken for you anyway.
Also, Mac OSX 10.5 is not compatible with Firestorm 4.4.2.

There is no real fix for this crash (the fix will need to come from Apple); however, switching over to using the Nvidia web drivers will stop the crashes. There is a chance of the viewer running with poorer performance.
This problem affects other games, too; for example, see constant crashes - OS X 10.11 El Capitan and OSX El Capitan 10.11 Beta (15A21). The same workaround appears to fix the problem in other games also; that is, to switch over to using the Nvidia web drivers instead of the Nvidia driver that Apple provides.
Please note that this is not a viewer-specific crash. Refer to this Firestorm Jira: [BUG-10302] [Mac El Capitan] Firestorm crash/incompatibility with Mac OS 10.11 and this SL Jira: BUG-10302 Frequent Crashes in Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan.
If some characters now display as boxes, you can edit the fonts.xml file within Firestorm to cause the characters to load properly.

IMPORTANT:
How to update Firestorm:
OpenSIM versions of FS do not have Havok. That only matters if you're uploading mesh objects and need to specify the mesh physics properties, or if you need to manipulate the region navmesh for pathfinding. The terms of the Havok license prohibit its use anywhere but Second Life, so it's not present in OpenSim versions. Furthermore, the Havok libraries are not currently available for 64-bit platforms.
Firestorm Viewer is certified to be free of viruses and malware.
“n/a” in the table below means “not available”; see the boxed note above.

For basic information on how to get help, click here.
This page covers issues and problems which you might encounter with Firestorm; for topics concerning how to use the viewer, you are instead directed to the main Firestorm documentation page.
The topics here are divided into issues which are directly related to the viewer, and those which are really SL issues or bugs.
Should this not be helpful, then please contact support. The best place to get fast help is in one of the in-world groups. Otherwise, you may contact any of our support team. We will do our best to assist you.
If you believe you have found a genuine bug - or have a feature request, then you can file a JIRA.
For an introduction to the basics of troubleshooting, please refer to this page.
Phoenix has some video tutorials on YouTube; you may want to visit and bookmark the Phoenix Viewer channel.
In general, Nvidia graphics cards and drivers work very well with Second Life.
There is a known Nvidia driver crash that occurs for some users on El Capitan. See Mac El Capitan Nvidia Driver Crash.
If you have started crashing following an Nvidia driver update, try going back to the driver version that worked for you. Be sure to completely uninstall the recent driver before installing the older one.
See also this page.
Please note: Viewers play a minor part in voice functionality. The bulk of voice support is given by the external application called SLVoice, which is made by the SL voice provider, Vivox. Voice failures are almost always due to one of the following reasons:
Please go to Voice Echo Canyon when trying to get voice to work. If voice is working correctly for you, anything you say there will be echoed back to you. Once there, relog to last location.
Due to the many different versions of each operating system (Windows, linux distros, Mac OSx's), it is very difficult to give specifics for each one. Nonetheless, make sure that your operating system is correctly configured for voice: that voice is going to your headset (or speakers, as you prefer), and that your mic is enabled and configured.
If voice still does not work, then continue working through this page.
If you find that voice cuts in and out, particularly right after a TP, and at the same time, you notice that things are not rezzing in for you very well (avatars, objects, etc), then the likely cause is that your router is being “overwhelmed” with texture transfers. So reboot your router/modem, and then your computer, and see if the problem is solved.
You can also try adjusting your bandwidth as explained here.
If that does not help, then proceed with the section below.
Chances are good that the problem lies with the SL servers or the voice provider, Vivox. Still, there are things you can try:
Don't do this section if using Firestorm 4.6.5.40833.
Some have issues with voice on Firestorm - specifically, “stuttering”, or SLVoice crashing when you unplug a USB device. The only work-around currently is to swap out the voice files.
Try disabling compatibility mode, if enabled:
On Windows 7, if you find yourself being able to talk but not hear what others say, then a possible solution is to use the sound drivers from Vista. (This needs further confirmation.)
Check that slvoice.exe is not muted in the speaker/headphones icon (located in the notification area) → mixer.
Every linux distro is different; and each distro may have more than one window manager to further complicate things. So tips can't be “absolute”; you will need to experiment and see what works for you. The following have been suggested by some as effective. But first….
In the Firestorm install directory, there's a text file (originally from LL) with tips on getting voice to work in linux. If you haven't read that, then you can try to see if it helps.
#export LL_BAD_OPENAL_DRIVER=x
Below are results for selected linux distros, based on input from Phoenix and Firestorm users. This will be updated as more information becomes available.
sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio:i386 libidn11:i386 libuuid1:i386 libstdc++6:i386
If you are unable to connect to voice and you are also having problems with teleporting and/or loading your friends list, perhaps along with other things, then see the “Mac-specific” section of this page for instructions and more explanation.
Some Mountain Lion users experience a problem with voice output, while input works fine (that is, you can hear but you can't speak). To fix this, open the voice preferences for your viewer (Preferences→ Sound & Media -> Voice in Firestorm). Click the device settings button and select “built-in microph” as the audio input device and click OK. (OK is important, Apply doesn't work.) Reopen Preferences and go back to the device settings button to ensure you're getting sound in on the mic.

What is chat? Chat is essentially how we communicate with other residents in Second Life. There are two major categories of chat: text chat and voice chat. This page will focus on text chat. For info about voice chat, go here: Using Voice.
There is a nicely detailed write-up of chat and IM windows, and associated Firestorm settings, here.
There are 4 types of chat:
Alternatively, you can choose to show the “send” button at the end of the nearby chat bar, with which you can select the chat type (whisper, say, or shout). It will remain in whatever chat type until you change it. To enabled this “send” button, go to Preferences→ Chat -> Typing→ Show chat type / send chat button in chat bar.
These are grid-wide, meaning anyone anywhere on the grid can participate, without being in the same location.
The viewer has the ability to translate text into a language that you choose but you need to set up an account with Bing or Google to do so. See here for more information. Previously, Google provided free translation services, but this has now ended, and you must establish your own account with Bing or Google, which may incur a cost. Please be aware that chat translation only works in nearby chat and not in IMs or group chat.
There are several ways to start an instant message:
Provided you are allowed to join a group chat, go to Group tab in the Contacts window and either double click on the group or select the group and press the IM/call button.
If you are in the group tab in the People panel, double clicking on the group will start chat; or you can right-click on the selected group and select chat.
To close the group chat window for the duration of the login session, press the X button at top right of that group window. If you want to close it temporarily, press the Zz button at top right to put the group in “snooze” mode. Snooze mode will close the chat for a set duration; and after that duration is up, any new chat in that group will make that group's chat window open again. Chat group duration default time is set to 900s but can be changed in Preferences> Chat> Chat tab.
A conference is a private conversation with two or more Residents. It is similar to group chat, but more dynamic, since everyone on your friends list can be invited, as well as everyone you have a calling card from.
To start a conference chat:
Note: Conferences are limited to twenty participants.
The terminology has changed so please read here.
To save or not save your chat logs and transcripts (nearby, IM/Group), go to Preferences→ Privacy -> Logs & Transcripts and select the options under Save:.
The location for the saved chat logs and transcripts depends on your operating system but can be found and changed in Network & Files -> Directories→ Conversation logs and transcripts location. Press the Set button to change it to a different folder.
If you are offline and an IM is sent to you, the IM is backlogged and will appear as a set of notification icons in the upper right or lower left of your viewer when you log in.
The backlog can contain up to 25 IMs (cap limit), including inventory transfers, group invitations, and group notifications. If someone gives you an inventory item (generating an IM message), the message is placed in your inventory's Trash folder, and you can retrieve it when you return. If a scripted object sends the inventory, it is deleted immediately.
Second Life will keep the IMs in the backlog for 31 days. If you do not log in within the 31 days to view your IMs, they will be deleted.
To ensure you get your offline IMs and to work around the cap, they can be sent to the email address that is connected to your contact information. To enable this option, go to Preferences→ Chat -> Notices→ check Email me IMs when I'm offline.
If you send a reply to an offline IM via email, the original sender will receive it as an IM. The email reply is limited to 1023 characters and must be sent within 5 days.

The Quick Preferences Panel provides fast access to commonly used settings and is accessed via a button on the bottom bar.
Activate it by clicking the button with the Firestorm logo shown on the image on the right. To close it, press the button again, and it will appear released.
NOTE: There is a video tutorial about Quick Preferences here.
NOTE: Not all skins have all the options shown; the order may also be different.
It is possible to add or remove settings from the QuickPrefs window by clicking the wrench icon in the lower right corner. The window will change, and appear as shown to the right. This edit panel overlays the lower portion of the QuickPrefs window.
To add more settings, click the + button again, and repeat.
Simply highlight the setting by clicking on the name in the upper portion of the QuickPrefs window. You can then change the name of it to something you prefer, if you wish. Or you can replace it with a totally different setting, which may be faster than deleting the setting and then adding a new one.
To the left of each of the existing settings in the window, a trashcan icon now is shown; clicking this will remove the associated setting from the window.
When you have completed making changes, click the 'x' button in the lower edit panel. It is then best to relog to ensure that changes “stick'.
If for any reason you need or want to revert to the default layout of the Quick Preferences panel, then click the Reset button at the bottom. Note that this cannot be reversed.

If you have certain Intel HD graphics, and have upgraded your PC to Windows 10, your graphics card will not be fully supported by Intel. If you have this issue, you will be unable to log in. You will get the following error dialog box:
Firestorm is unable to run because your video card drivers did not install properly or are out of date, or are for unsupported hardware. Please make sure you have the latest video card drivers, and even if you do have the latest, try reinstalling them. If you continue to receive this message, contact the Second Life Support Portal
This is not a function of the viewer, but instead is a function of the drivers provided by Intel for your computer. However we have developed a workaround that should help most users with this issue continue to have the ability to use the Firestorm viewer.
Note: This fix is only available for 32 bit versions of Firestorm. Even if you have a 64 bit version of Windows 10, and usually use the 64 bit version of Firestorm, you will need to use the 32 bit for 4.7.9 (4.7.7, 4.7.5 and 4.7.3) as we do not have a fix that will work with the 64bit version
Important: Do NOT run in Compatibility mode.
Do NOT uninstall Firestom; you will be replacing one or more files, not the enitre install.
You should now be able to run Firestorm on your PC.

Note: When using this workaround your Help–> About Firestorm panel will show your OS as Windows 8 rather than Windows 10.
This window is opened from the main inventory window, when clicking the bottom gear icon and selecting Show filters.
It has check boxes which, when enabled, will included that type of item in the inventory display. To hide (for example) notecards from being shown, uncheck the Notecards checkbox.
To select all types of items, click the All button; to deselect all types, click the None button.
The upper list, Always show, shows alerts which will be displayed to you; the lower list, Never show, includes messages which will not be shown.
To have an alert no longer show, locate the message in the upper section, then click the down arrow in the middle, thus moving it to the lower section.
Similarly, if you wish to re-enable an alert, locate it in the lower list, then click the up arrow to move it to the upper list.

Here, you can enable/disable three special shortcuts:
Each of the above can, optionally, play an alert sound, which you can change by specifying your own sound clip UUID. You an hear the sound by clicking the button labelled 'P', or revert the sound to the default by clicking the 'D'.
Note that the names shown by radar, in the nearby chat window, can be clicked to open a profile.
Note: Because Group Chats are prevented from appearing when either When Receive Group Notices is disabled, Disable Group Chat As Well or Disable All Group Chats are enabled (see above), no alerts are triggered.

NOTE: Photographers can access and change many of the settings quickly and conveniently via the Phototools Window.
These options control when alpha masking should be used in an attempt to mitigate the well known alpha sorting issue, in which prims behind other prims may appear to flicker in front. The two options are:
Depth of field simulates real life blurring that occurs when things are not in focus. For example, if you are taking a photo of a person, then typically, things in the background will be blurred; the futher away, the more blurred. If you shift your focus to a tree behind the person, then the person will, in turn, become blurred.
