Finding a Missing Window

So you find yourself suddenly missing a window, perhaps inventory, or chat, or the edit window… How to find it?

  • Close all other windows, to make sure it isn't hiding under one of them.
  • Compress all the buttons on the bottom toolbar to the right.
    Alternately, drag the toolbar buttons from their present location onto another toolbar;
(Reminder: there are three available toolbars: bottom of the screen, right side, and left side. Buttons are dragged by left clicking, holding the left mouse button down, and dragging.)
  • Go to Preferences→ User Interface → 2D Overlay, and lower the UI Scaling slider. The default setting is 1.0. You may find that setting it lower, temporarily, will reveal the missing window. If you find the missing window, move it to the center of the screen, then reset UI Scaling to 1.0 or your preferred value.
  • Reset the window's position via Debug Settings. To do this,
    1. Try to ensure that the missing window is closed. (You many be able to tell this if you are using a toolbar button and it is highlighted or not.) If you can't tell, proceed anyway.
    2. Then open the Advanced menu (press Ctrl-Alt-D to enable Advanced, if it isn't already), and go to Show Debug Settings.
    3. Consult the table below for the names of the two settings that match your missing window.
    4. Find the first setting in the Debug Settings window; set it to 0 (zero).
    5. Repeat for the second setting.
    6. Relog.

How to set up Restrained Love (RLVa)

To use the Restrained Love features built in to Firestorm you need to follow a few simple steps:

  • Press CTRL-P to open the Preferences panel
  • Go to Firestorm
  • Move on to Extras
  • Check on “Allow Remote Scripted Viewer Controls (RLVa)”
  • Go to User Interface
  • Move on to Interface Windows
  • Uncheck“Hide empty system folders from inventory”
  • Confirm your changes by clicking Ok in the right corner

After this you have to restart Firestorm to get RLVa working. Additionally you usually need to get a so-called Relay. This is an attachment you wear that enables objects in-world to interact with your viewer. These Relays are usually free of charge and come as HUDs or pieces of jewelry you wear. It's recommended to get a “Multi Relay”, so you can be controlled by more than one device at the same time.

If you also want to enable traps and toys to put folders into your inventory, you need go through a few additional steps:

  • Click on the RLVa menu
  • UncheckForbid Give to #RLV
  • Open your Inventory (CTRL-I)
  • Right click on My Inventory
  • Select New Folder
  • Rename the new folder to #RLV (be sure to use uppercase letters, exactly as shown here)

Now you should be able to accept inventory from traps and toys, which will automatically be moved into the #RLV folder tree.

How to use the (nostrip) tag in RLVa

Users of RLV enabled viewers often run into the problem that devices can take off certain attachments or clothing layers, destroying the look of their avatar. For example, RLV devices that offer shoes to be taken off also detach left and right foot attachments. For certain avatar types that use prim attachments for their feet, this destroys the overall look. You can fix this issue by using locking scripts that prevent the respective attachment from being taken off, but this has a couple of disadvantages:

  1. It uses additional scripts
  2. You can't detach or take off these prims and clothing layers without unlocking them first

The solution is using the (nostrip) tag. Adding this tag to the name of an item or a folder instructs the RLV system to ignore these items when a detach or remove clothes command is sent. For this to work you must have the items in your #RLV folder tree. Together with the leading period “.” this can be used to make avatar folders that contain the bare minimum necessary to make up your look. The “.” makes sure this folder will not show up in a device's shared outfit list.

NOTE: The (nostrip) method only works with the actual worn items, not with inventory links.

Single Item Lock

To prevent a single item from being taken off by RLV devices, simply add the tag (nostrip) to the name, separated by a blank space:

Female Hair

will become

Female Hair (nostrip)

If the item is no modify you can put it into a folder by itself and add the (nostrip) tag to the folder.

Multiple Item Lock

To have your complete avatar safe from RLV devices, you can make a folder for it and add all parts of your avatar that are essential for its look. Then give it a name that has a “.” as first character (to hide it from RLV shared outfit devices) contains the (nostrip) tag at the end:

.Female Fox Avatar (nostrip)

This will make sure that no important parts of your avatar will be taken off; all other parts still can be removed as usual.

lag - Added note on complexity

Lag - What Is It?

People use the term a great deal, but usually without really understanding what it means, what causes it or how to deal with it. Some of the things commonly suggested to reduce lag actually have little or no effect.

First off, “lag” is a catch-all word that actually covers three very different things, and it is important to distinguish between them. Most lag reduction methods only deal with one of these three aspects.

You can use the Statistics Bar to get detailed information of what might be causing lag.

Network Lag

This is when you have connectivity issues. There are problems somewhere in the network between your computer and the LL servers. This usually can be noticed when you start to experience packet loss. Press Shift-Ctrl-1 (or Advanced1)→ Performance Tools → Statistics Bar) and look at the top, packet loss; ideally this should be 0%; if it isn't, you have a connectivity issue and are losing data. Also, check Ping SIM. Ideally, this should be under 200.

Symptoms of a poor connection include (but are not limited to):

  • failure of your avatar or textures to rez;
  • object information not displaying in hover tips when you mouse over the object;
  • teleport failure;
  • random disconnections.

You can try to mitigate network lag by playing with your bandwidth. Too high, or too low, a value will result in network lag. For information on how to determine your optimal bandwidth, refer to this page.

Aside from the network issues mentioned above, some programs may inhibit or interfere with a good connection. Some firewall software and anti-virus programs are known to do this. You may want to temporarily disable them and see if the situation improves.

Client Side

Everything you see has to be drawn by your graphics card. When there is too much to draw, when your computer cannot keep up, you experience client-side lag. Avatar Render Weight (formerly known as ARC - Avatar Rendering Cost) is part of client-side lag, as the name itself says.

Symptoms of client-side lag include jerky or sluggish movement.

There are many things you can do to reduce this, without having to ask people to adapt to you:

  • reduce your draw distance (do you really need to see 512m away?);
  • turn on avatar impostors (this makes drawing of distant avatars much faster);
  • disable atmospheric shaders (which serves to drastically reduce how much your computer has to render, as the sky alone is very graphics-intensive);
  • if need be, inhibit the rendering of other avatars: Advanced → Rendering Types → Avatar - or derender them.
  • try reducing your level of detail settings for everyday use or to improve performance: Preferences → Graphics → Objects and Sculpts LOD; you can always adjust this setting again temporarily if something specific fails to render for you.

Client side lag is local to you. It is a direct result of how powerful your computer is. It is no one else's fault if your computer cannot handle a specific situation. So if you're in a high-lag setting, adapt temporarily as described above.

It must also be pointed out that client side lag does NOT affect things like scripts, at all. It has next to zero impact on a SIM's performance.

Particles

Contrary to popular belief, particles do not “lag a SIM'. Their effect on a SIM, on the servers, is in fact close to zero. Particles are almost entirely client-side. They are rendered on your computer, by your graphics card, and in fact, do NOT require a script to keep them going. They need a script to initiate the effect, yes, but afterward the script may be removed and the particle effect will keep going forever - until another script is dropped in to turn them off, or the object is taken or deleted.

If you find that particles are “lagging you”, it is wrong to ask that the effect be stopped. Instead, stop it yourself, on your own computer. That way others who are less affected may continue to enjoy them.

You can disable particles in a number of ways:

  • Advanced → Rendering Types → Particles
  • Preferences → Graphics → Max. particle count - set to 0

Doing any of these things will stop particles “lagging you”. There is no need to ask others to degrade their SL experience on your behalf. Also, again, particles do NOT cause server-side or script lag. Even if the scripts are not removed, a single one uses 0.02ms script time.

Owners of venues that have a “no particles” policy may mean well, but are misinformed. Again, particles do not lag a SIM, and are very easily dealt with client-side as described previously. Those venue owners are aiming at the wrong target in trying to reduce lag: particles aren't it, scripts are - and even more so, moving avatars (see below). You can't remove the avatars, of course, but you can request that they not show up with heavily scripted attachments.

(Having said that, every little bit helps when it comes to reducing script lag, so if you have a particle effect that does not require the script to be in it at all times, remove it.)

Complexity

Like particles, high avatar complexity does not lag a region; the effect is entirely client-side. The higher the complexity, the greater the client lag it causes. Be aware of your own complexity, so as to try to reduce the lag you cause for others.

Server Side

Server-side lag is caused by several things, independently. There are two major causes; all others are secondary and negligible. They are, in order of impact on a SIM:

  • Physics. People, even wearing nothing at all, with an Avatar Render Weight of 1, and no scripts, will lag a SIM. The SIM needs to keep track of where each avatar is, to prevent them walking through one another, floors, walls, etc. Avatar movement is VERY high when it comes to server side lag. Sitting down reduces this lag significantly. Your avatar, in fact, becomes linked to the prim you're sitting on.
  • Scripts. This is common knowledge, compared to the previous point. If you know you're going to a busy event, then remove scripted attachments, as many as possible. An AO in and of itself is negligible when compared to hair that is resize-scripted. Keep the AO, and instead ensure that your hair, shoes and other attachments have no resize scripts in them. (There is no good reason whatsoever for anyone to be carrying around more than 200 scripts on a human avatar, even when in full RP attire, with combat HUDs.)

Contrary to popular belief, prims do not lag a SIM - or more precisely, their effect on lag is miniscule compared to the two things mentioned above. Scripted prims cause lag; unscripted ones do not - relatively speaking, of course.

So, if you're going to an event, before you leave for it, check your attachments (hair, shoes, etc.) to ensure that they are unscripted. To those running events, it is strongly suggested that you ask attendees to do these things; a badly lagged SIM affects everyone at the event.

NOTE: As stated earlier, lag caused by physics (primarily avatar movement) is the number one cause of region lag. If physics lag is bad enough, scripts simply will stop running; avatar movement is considered more important than scipts. If there are 40 people at an event, and many are moving about, it will be laggy even if none of those people are wearing scripts.

NOTE: Moving away from a scripted prim will not do anything to reduce the “lag” it may be causing you. Scripts all run on the region server, and therefore, they are “global” to the server. No matter where you are in the region, the effect of that script running - that is, the time taken to run it, and the memory it consumes - will be felt on the entire region.

It must be stated that the above is a simplification; the true situation is far more complex but the intent is to be brief, simple, yet sufficiently correct.

For further information on lag, please consult the following:

Windows 10 and Intel stuck at initializing VFS

These instructions apply specifically to:
  • Windows 10 Operating System
  • Intel Graphics HD, Intel Graphics HD2500 and Intel Graphics HD4000
  • 64bit version of Firestorm only

Windows 10 updates since March 2017 have resulted in users experiencing stalling or crashing at “initializing VFS”.

Firestorm addresses this issue, but you must do this additional step once you have installed the 64bit version:

1. While logged out of Firestorm.
2. Right click the desktop shortcut for the 64bit Firestorm → Properties → Shortcut tab.
3. In the “Target” text box, go to the end of the text, *add a space* and then add this exact text to the end: --noprobe.

"C:\Program Files\FirestormOS-Releasex64\FirestormOS-Releasex64.exe" --set InstallLanguage en --noprobe

4. Click “OK” to apply to save changes and launch Firestorm using the Desktop shortcut. (Note that if you use the pinned application on your task bar, make sure you pin the shortcut, not the running viewer.)

Firestorm Gateway for New Residents

The Firestorm Gateway is a Community Gateway for new residents coming into Second Life where we provide a safe and welcoming learning environment. Help is freely given for users on any viewer by our Helper volunteers.

New Helper Applicants are required to go through a process that includes filling out an application (which requires some knowledge of the Gateway regions) and following through a series of steps and training. The final step would be an interview with the Gateway HR Manager at which time both sides would discuss and determine if being a volunteer helper is right for you. You will receive your HUD and follow with a 30 day probation period.

Previous Gateway Helpers that have left the team for any reason: If you have been gone longer than 6 months or more you will need to start the process over again and reapply. If you have been gone for 3 - 6 months, you will need to contact the Gateway HR Manager about coming back. If you are accepted back this will likely include a brief interview and a retake of part of your helper training. If you have been gone under 3 months and are accepted back, you can begin as a helper again after reading through any changes that have been made in your absence.

Applications for Helper at the Firestorm Gateway are in the Social Building at Firestorm Social Island. Look for the little red mail box, the box with applications is beside it. Applications can be dropped in that mail box when completed.

antivirus_whitelisting - [Whitelisting Steps for Specific AV Software]

Whitelisting the Viewer in Anti-Virus Software (plus Firewalls and Anti-Malware Sofware)

Introduction

Some anti-virus programs (and firewalls and anti-malware programs) will incorrectly flag a viewer - or necessary components of a viewer - as a virus or threat. They may remove the suspected part completely, rendering all or part of the viewer non-functional. There is nothing we can do about this. However, it should be possible for you to tell your anti-virus (firewalls/anti-malware) that the viewer is safe; you will need to whitelist the viewer program as well as some components.

The following is a list of some protection software and how to whitelist. Naturally we cannot provide instructions for all existing programs, and the information here may be outdated. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that you consult the software manual for the specific program you use, for accurate and up to date information.

In the instructions below, substitute “firewall” or “anti-malware program” for “anti-virus” as needed.

Known Issues

See the Malwarebytes tab below.

Reinstalling and Whitelisting

Here are the steps to follow to reinstall and whitelist a viewer in such as way that the anti-virus program doesn't “mangle” the viewer yet again:

  1. Uninstall the viewer normally.
  2. Disable the anti-virus software completely (in a few cases, this requires rebooting to make sure that the AV is not running anymore).
  3. Reinstall the viewer, but make sure you do not install it back to the default folder suggested; install to a new folder. This step is vital.
  4. In your anti-virus program, whitelist the following, per the instructions below (or better, consult the manual for your anti-virus software):
    • Windows: the viewer install folder
      • inside this, the viewer itself (firestorm.exe), slplugin.exe, slvoice.exe and dullahan_host.exe
    • Mac: the Firestorm application (normally in your Applications folder)
    • the viewer cache folder
      • In its default location, the folder is hidden on most OSs. To find it, you will need to show hidden folders. Now you need to locate the cache folder:
        • Windows Vista/7/8/10: C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\Firestorm
        • Mac: /Users/[USERNAME]/Library/Caches/Firestorm
  5. Run the viewer to ensure that it is working correctly; do a test of search and voice to ensure that both work, checking that the respective plugins get loaded. Log out of the viewer.
  6. Re-enable your anti-virus software and run the viewer again, repeating the tests above.

Whitelisting Steps for Specific AV Software

If you don't find your antivirus program listed, or the instructions are out
of date, check the help files or support site for your antivirus program.

Adaware free

  • Open the Adaware user interface
  • Click Scan Computer (second icon from top)
  • Go to Manage Exclusions and click View
  • Click Add
  • Navigate to main Firestorm application folder
  • Click OK
  • Repeat for Firestorm folders in User/Local and User/Roaming

Advanced System Care

If you run the “junk files cleanup” function, then Advanced System Care is liable to trash your settings. Further to this, this program can also severely interfere with viewer connection to SL servers, as documented here.

Avast

  • Open the Avast user interface
  • Click Settings
  • Click Components
  • Click File-System Shield Customize
  • Click Exclusions
  • Click Add
  • Click Browse and navigate to the Firestorm install folder
  • Click OK
  • Repeat for the Firestorm cache folder
  • Click OK all the way out

AVG

  • Open the AVG user interface.
  • Click Tools→Advance Settings.
  • Resident Shield→Exceptions.
  • The Add the program (or file, directory) you wish to be excluded from scans.

BitDefender

Please see How to add antivirus exclusions (exceptions) in Bitdefender 2018
Also the User Manual, pages 99-100, for how to add exceptions to the Advanced Threat Defence Whitelist.

Bullguard

  1. Open Bullguard as normal
  2. Click on “Settings”
  3. Click on “Advanced”
  4. Go to “Antivirus” in the lefthand column
  5. Open the menu (down arrow)
  6. Select “Tuning”
  7. In the selection of tick boxes on the righthand panel, select Skip File/Folders
  8. Click on Files/Folders
  9. This will bring up a probably empty set of lines, so click on the “+” sign
  10. This should allow you to navigate to the particular folder, in this case the Firestorm Cache folder
  11. Select that and it will appear in the first line of the box
  12. To add other Firestorm folders listed at the top of this wiki page, repeat as needed
  13. Here is also a check box to allow you to skip processes. The procedure is the same: Click on “process”
  14. Click “+” and navigate to the .exe you wish to whitelist
  15. Close Bullguard.

  • Click Add.
  • Navigate to and select the Firestorm install folder
  • Click Add again
  • Navigate to and select the Firestorm cache folder
  • Click OK to close the Exclude from scanning dialog.

Gatekeeper (Mac OS X)

If Gatekeeper prevents you from opening Firestorm, there is a simple workaround: See “How to open an app from a unidentified developer and exempt it from Gatekeeper” on this page. Once you have allowed Firestorm to open via this method, Gatekeeper will not flag it on subsequent launches (until you reinstall Firestorm again).

For a longer-term method, please visit here for a tutorial on whitelisting using the Gatekeeper software.

Kaspersky

In order to create an exclusion rule:

  • Open application settings window.
  • Select Protection on the left.
  • Click the Trusted Zone button in the Exclusions block.
  • Go to the tab Exclusion rules and click Add.
  • Select an exclusion type in the Properties field: Object and/or Threat type.
    • Object
Click select object and choose a file, folder or a mask to exclude.
    • Select a Component in the corresponding field. The rule will apply to the selected component.
    • Threat type. Click enter threat type to select a file, folder or a mask to exclude.

Rules can apply to the following protection components:

  • Virus scan,
  • File Anti-Virus,
  • Mail Anti-Virus (Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 for Windows Workstations 6.0.4.x only),
  • Proactive Defense (Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 for Windows Workstations 6.0.4.x only),
  • Web Anti-Virus (Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 for Windows Workstations 6.0.4.x only).

A scan if a disk or folder containing excluded objects scans the entire disk/folder except the excluded objects. Yet you can force scan excluded objects from the contextual menu (by right-clicking).

Also you can create an exclusion rule from within a report window:

  • Right-click the report object you want excluded.
  • Choose the option Add to Trusted Zone.

An Exclusion rule window will open. Make sure that you are satisfied with the new exclusion rule settings. Object name and threat type fields are assigned automatically on the basis of the report data. Click OK to create the rule.

Download Intelligence

Norton Internet Security includes a feature called Download Intelligence. This works such that the user community reports downloads as good or bad. While this may be very helpful, it can also be unfairly detrimental to programs, especially when they are updated as they are then treated as totally new.

Therefore, if you use Download Intelligence, you are urged to disable it before attempting to download any of our viewers, in order to avoid them being incorrectly reported as infected with a virus. Refer to this page for instructions.

Panda Cloud Antivirus Free (version 2.1.1)

  • Click on the “Antivirus” section of the UI.
  • Click on “Advanced Settings” (bottom of the panel current version)
  • Click on “Exclusions” tab
  • Choose “Add”, then navigate to your Firestorm installation folder and put a check in the box to the left of slplugin.exe (and llceflib_host.exe for FS 4.7.7 and later), and everything else you want to exclude. Once you've checked something, the “exclude” button at the bottom of the panel is enabled. Click it when you've finished checking off everything you want to exclude.
  • Click “OK” at the bottom of the “Exclusions” tab.

See this page for additional Panda tips for whitelisting files and folders: http://www.pandasecurity.com/homeusers/downloads/docs/product/help/is/2012/en/709.htm The page is out of date but the methods may still work.

PC Tools Spyware Doctor

  • Right click PC Tools icon in taskbar → Open
  • Go to Settings → Global action list
  • Click “Add”, choose “File” & browse to your Firestorm installation folder & choose slplugin.exe - and llceflib_host.exe (for FS 4.7.9 and later).
  • This will add the plugin(s) to the global whitelist.

Webroot

To date (August 2015), there is no way to whitelist the entire cache folder in WebRoot. Therefore WebRoot may continue to cause severe problems including slow rezzing and viewer freezing.

If you test with WebRoot off and find your SL experience greatly improved, the only suggestion we have is to choose another antivirus program.

Some more more info on Webroot and the problems it has been known to cause, see this page.

Preferences - Graphics

NOTE: Photographers can access and change many of the settings quickly and conveniently via the Phototools Window.

General

  • Preset in use: Shows the name of the graphics preset in use.
  • Quality and speed: Allows you to adjust the graphics quality (lower is faster). Many options are changed based on this setting.
    • Reload Defaults: The circular arrow to the right of the Quality and speed slider (above) will revert all graphics settings to default values. Use this if you have made changes that have a negative impact on the veiwer and cannot remember what you changed.
  • Fullscreen Mode (requires restart): Enable this if you want to run Firestorm in full screen mode, as opposed to windowed.
  • Shaders:
    • Transparent water: Allows water to look transparent instead of opaque. Enable this (if it isn't already) if you exeprience glowing water while wearing rigged mesh.
    • Bump mapping and shiny: Enables the rendering of shiny and bump mapped surfaces.
    • Local Lights: Globally enables/disables local lights.
    • Basic shaders: Allows rendering of high-quality water, basic lighting, and other graphical effects.
    • Atmospheric shaders: Enables advanced atmospheric and lighting.
    • Advanced Lighting Model: Check this to allow shadows and other features to be enabled. Note that enabling this can cause instability and performance issues; click here for known specifics. For more how shadows behave, see this SL wiki page.
    • Ambient occlusion: Checking this enables more realistic shadows; the stability and performance note above also applies here.
  • Shadows:

Lets you choose what light sources cause shadows; this is available only if the Advanced Lighting Model option above is enabled).
    • none
    • sun/moon
    • sun/moon and projectors
  • Avatar Shadows: controls whether and how avatars cast shadows. The higher the setting, the more client lag it will cause.
    • None
    • Simplified
    • Optimized
    • Complex
  • Water Reflections: Allows water to reflect terrain, objects, and avatars.
  • Point Lighting: Affects the number of rendered light sources when Advanced Lighting Model (above) is disabled. A viewer restart is needed if this setting is changed.
  • Draw distance:

Affects how far out from your viewpoint objects will be rendered in the scene.
  • Max particle count: Sets the maximum number of particles you are able to see on your screen at once.
  • Maximum complexity: Controls at what point a visually complex avatar is shown as a jellydoll. 1) Current defaults are:
    • Low: 35,000
    • Low-Mid: 100,000
    • Mid: 200,000
    • Mid-High: 250,000
    • High: 300,000
    • High-Ultra: 350,000
    • Ultra: 350,000
  • Max # of non-imposter avatars: Sets the number of avatars that will be fully rendered.
  • Post process quality: Determines the resolution with which glow is rendered. A lower setting will cause glow to look slightly pixelated.
  • Avatar Physics: Affects the detail of avatar physics. Set to 0 to disable avatar physics entirely.
  • Level of Detail (LOD) Distance Factors:

    • Objects & Sculpts LOD: Determines the amount of detail the viewer will use in rendering object shapes; a lower setting causes objects to appear more angular and polygonal.
Setting this higher than 4 via Debug Settings is not recommended. Please see here for details on why high values are not recommended.
    • Flexiprims: Determines the amount of detail the viewer will use in rendering flexible object shapes.
    • Trees: Determines the amount of detail the viewer will use in rendering (Linden) tree shapes.
    • Avatars: Determines the amount of detail the viewer will use in rendering avatar shapes.
    • Terrain: Determines the amount of detail the viewer will use in rendering terrain.
    • Sky: Controls the detail with which windlight skies are rendered. Higher values mean better quality but lower performance.
  • Avatar Rendering:
    • Hardware skinning: This allows some aspects of avatar rendering to be handled by your graphics card to improve performance.
    • Avatar cloth: Allows the rendering of flexible cloth on avatar clothing, such as shirts and flared pants.
  • Terrain Detail: Choose the amount of terrain detail you would like to see. Setting this option to Low replaces the ground texture with a low-resolution ground texture.
This option is not available (ie, it is greyed out) if Basic Shaders is enabled, in which case it is always set to High.
  • Presets: Three buttons which allow you to save, load or delete graphics settings presets.
    • To create a preset, set your graphics settings as you like. Click “Save” and give the preset a name.
    • To load a preset that you have created, click “Load” and choose the preset to load.
    • To delete one, click “Delete” and choose the preset to delete.
    • The presets can be accessed either from Preferences → Graphics → General or from the presets button in the upper right of the viewer, near the media and sound controls.

Hardware Settings

  • Anisotropic Filtering: Enables anisotropic filtering to improve texture quality. This setting may reduce your viewer's performance. For more information see this wikipedia page.
  • Enable OpenGL Vertex Buffer Objects: VBO on modern hardware gives a performance gain. However, older hardware often has poor implementation of VBOs and the viewer may become unstable when this is enabled. VBO is explained in depth here.
  • Enable Streamed VBOs: Allows the use of streamed VBO as well as static; only works if you have VBO enabled.
  • Enable Lossy Texture Compression: If this is enabled, texture compression will be enabled for rendering. This gives improved performance, and a smaller grapics memory footprint, at the cost of lower quality rendered textures. Textures are compressed by the video card before being stored into video memory. Given that compressed textures can often end up pixellated, it is not recommended that this be enabled unless you have little video memory. Ref: SL JIRA MAINT-708.
  • Antialiasing: Smoothes jagged edges. Renders a scene the number of multiple times that is actually shown and scales it down. Choose the level of antialiasing the viewer will use (requires restart).
  • Gamma: Use the Windlight Sky Editor's Scene Gamma control on the Atmosphere/Sun tab instead of this; currently functional only if Atmospheric Shaders are disabled.
  • Viewer Texture Memory Buffer (MB): This is the amount of graphics memory the viewer will use. By default, it is set to the size of your graphics card's memory.
    • 32bit versions only. This setting is hard limited to a maximum of 512MB. Lowering this value may resolve certain texture corruption and performance issues, but under normal circumstances you should not need to alter this setting.
    • 64bit versions only. This setting is hard limited based on the VRAM available with your graphics card. It is recommended you increase the slider to use the maximum available to prevent texture thrashing.
      • GPU 1GB = up to 768MB
      • GPU 2GB+ = up to 1024MB
      • GPU 4GB+ = up to 2048MB
  • Fog Distance Ratio: Determines how far away Second Life's fog effect begins. Lower values = closer fog. Only used when you have Atmospheric Shaders disabled. If Atmospheric Shaders are enabled, this effect is handled by the Distance Multiplier control in the Advanced Sky Editor.

Rendering

World Updating

  • Freeze updates to World (pause everything): This suspends rendering. Useful for picture taking, if you wish to capture a specific scene that might otherwise change while you are preparing.

Texture Rendering

  • Use HTTP for receiving textures: Uses the HTTP protocol to fetch textures as opposed to the older UDP. Always on, as it is required for SL.
  • Restrict maximum texture resolution to 512px (64bit only; requires restart) (default on 32bit already).
  • Max Texture Quality Level: If you have a poor connection, you may wish to reduce the level of texture detail. This can be set to Normal, Minimal or None.
Naturally, setting this to anything other than Normal will result in textures displaying poorly, or not at all. Do not change unless absolutely necessary - for example, if you have a very poor connection but need to be online, and don't care if you can see textures or not.

Alpha Mask Rendering

These options control when alpha masking should be used in an attempt to mitigate the well known alpha sorting issue, in which prims behind other prims may appear to flicker in front. The two options are:

  • Render alpha masks when “Advanced Lighting Model” is not enabled
  • Render alpha masks when “Advanced Lighting Model” is enabled

Miscellaneous Rendering

  • Render Glow: If enabled, shows the glow effect on any prims that have it.
    • Strength: Controls the intensity of the glow effect. The default is 2.
  • Show avatars that haven't finished loading: Equivalent to the debug setting RenderUnloadedAvatar.
Note that this is not a solution to a bake fail, as it doesn't actually fix anything; it merely forces the viewer to display whatever it happens to have managed to load. It is recommended that this be always left disabled.
  • Limit Framerate: Yield some time to the local host if a threshold framerate is reached. The framerate limit is set with the slider to the right.
  • Show the Scene as Wireframe: Enables wireframe display of everything. Note that this setting does not persist after a relog.
  • Enable Attached Lights (Face Lights): Enable this if you wish to see the affects of lights worn by avatars.
  • Render Attached Particles: Enable to see particles generated by worn attachments.
  • Time to delay while pre-caching before showing world: Allows the world to start caching before it is shown, at login.
  • Quality of the shadows: Adjusts the quality of shadows. Note that increasing this will significantly impact rendering speed (FPS).
  • Scale of Terrain Texture Rendering (requires restart): Indicates the scale of terrain textures, with lower values being more compressed textures.

Depth of Field

Depth of field simulates real life blurring that occurs when things are not in focus. For example, if you are taking a photo of a person, then typically, things in the background will be blurred; the futher away, the more blurred. If you shift your focus to a tree behind the person, then the person will, in turn, become blurred.

For more information, refer here.

You can adjust the following settings to mimic RL camera effects.

  • Depth of Field: Enabling this causes out-of-focus objects to be blurred, depending on distance.
    • Enable while in edit mode: Normally, DoF disables when you edit something; if you enable this, DoF will remain active.
  • Camera F Number: Controls maximum screen radius from which to sample from, to avoid graphics card In real world terms this is the aperture setting for the lens and the lower the value the shorter the depth of field will be. The same applies to SL.
    The default value is 9.00
  • Camera Focal Length mm: This tells the viewer what Focal Length/Lens Length to simulate for the DOF effect. Higher numbers produce a narrower depth of field.
    The default is 50.0
  • Camera FOV degs.: This tells the viewer what FOV you would like to simulate for the DOF effect. Higher values will produce a more narrow depth of field.
    The default is 60.00
  • Camera Aspect ratio: This is supposed to be aspect ratio of the camera you're modelling. For example, a 35mm camera has an aspect ratio of 3:2 (1.5). Second Life will use this as a frame of reference for how field of view and focal length must be adjusted depending on window size.
Apparently, this currently has no effect.
    The default is 1.50
  • DOF Focus Transition Time: This sets the time in seconds it take to the viewer to change focus from one object.
    The default is 0.50
  • DOF Rendering Quality: This determines the quality of the DOF Effect. For non-photography uses '.25' is good. For setting up shots '.50' or '.70' is very nice. For shooting quality images '1.00' is best. Note that High values will slow down your FPS.
    The default is 0.70
Note: Normally, focus will be where ever you set it by alt left-click. However, you can have the focus follow the mouse cursor, even without having a 3D mouse installed.
  1. Go to the top menu, World → Photo & Video → Cameratools→ 3D Mouse, and enable 3D Mouse. (This setting does not survive a relog if you do not have a 3D mouse installed.)
  2. Enable Depth of Field and set values as described above.
  3. To have the focus under the mouse cursor, toggle FlyCam mode on (Advanced → Shortcuts → Joystick Flycam, or Alt-Shift-F).
Note that alt left-click will now move your avatar rather than change camera focus. So for photos, it is best to set up your shot the usual way, then go into flycam right before taking the picture, which you can do with Snapshot to Disk, Ctrl-`.

A essayer :

fs_install_crash

Crashing During Install or Startup

General

Viewer freezes while "Loading world..."

If you have Intel HD 620 or Intel HD 630, and Windows 10 – This is an Intel driver issue. The fix is to roll back to driver 24.20.100.6025. Download Legacy Intel® Graphics Driver for Windows® 10 Version: 24.20.100.6025 (Ref. BUG-225655.)

Firestorm "Locks Up" on "Initializing VFS"

If you have Intel Graphics HD, Intel Graphics HD2500 and Intel Graphics HD4000, and are using the 64bit version of Firestorm 5.0.7 or later, on Windows 10, refer to this page.

If you don't have the above graphics and this occurs, chances are good that some part of cache is corrupt. Deleting it should solve the problem.

  • Locate your cache folder. You will probably need to do this manually, if you are unable to log in. Use a file manager (like Windows Explorer for Windows system, Dolphin, or some such) to locate the cache folder. In its default location, the cache folder is hidden on most OSs. To find it, you will need to show hidden folders. Default cache locations are:
    • Windows 7, 8.1, and 10: press [Win] + [R] and type %localappdata%, then look for the Firestorm folder. (This method avoids having to un-hide folders.)
    • Mac: ~/Library/Caches/Firestorm
    • linux: ~/.firestorm/cache or ~/.firestorm_x64/cache
  • Delete the cache folder you located.
  • Log back into SL, to a quiet region (try Hippo Hollow, Aich or Hatton). Allow your inventory and cache to repopulate fully.

Windows only: If the above doesn't work, then click the speaker icon in the system tray, then touch the volume slider, just enough to change the volume slightly. It may be that the Windows sound system has stalled; this should “give it a kick”.

If the above fails, then try doing a full wipe of all settings.

Startup Crash with "Must Supply a Comment for Control..."

This indicates that a debug setting (a control) is missing a comment. It is unclear which comment is missing, but the fix is to reinstall Firestorm using the Clean Install procedures.

Firestorm Won't Start Up after a Recent Nvidia Update

Login Crash with a Private Pool Error

Ref. FIRE-12339

This is almost always caused by the MemoryPrivatePoolEnabled being set to TRUE. It should never be set to TRUE. But before you try to fix this, we could really use a copy of your crash logs to help us work on a fix. See here for steps to collect your crash logs, then attach those logs to FIRE-12339.

Then, do the following:

  • Make sure hidden files/folders are set to show - see here for steps.
  • Browse to your user_settings folder. This is located at -
    • Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\ [USERNAME] \Application Data\Firestorm\user_settings
    • Windows Vista, 7, or 8, 8.1, and 10: C:\Users\ [USERNAME] \AppData\Roaming\Firestorm\user_settings
    • Mac: User/Library/Application Support/Firestorm/user_settings
    • Linux: ~/.firestorm/user_settings
  • In the user_settings folder, find the file named “settings.xml”
  • Open settings.xml in a text editor - For Windows, Notepad++ is ideal for this
  • Search settings.xml for the term MemoryPrivatePoolEnabled
You will see a block of text like so:
<key>MemoryPrivatePoolEnabled</key>
<map>
<key>Backup</key>
<boolean>0</boolean>
<key>Comment</key>
<string>Enable the private memory pool management</string>
<key>Type</key>
<string>Boolean</string>
<key>Value</key>
<boolean>1</boolean>
</map>
  • Near the bottom there, change the “<boolean>1</boolean>” line just above </map> to “<boolean>0</boolean>”
  • Save changes to settings.xml and edit the text editor.
  • Profit.

Other Crash Situations

Issues outside of Firestorm can, and often do, result in viewer crashes….

  • Make sure your file system is not corrupt by running chkdsk or equivalent for your OS.
  • On Windows, ensure that your registry isn't messed up by running CCleaner or similar.
  • Reboot your PC and moder/router.
  • Ensure that video drivers are current, as well as your OS.
  • Do a Reinstall of Firestorm. Be sure to use a fresh download of the viewer; either clear your browser cache or use a different browser for the download.

By Operating System

Windows

  • If the installer does not run at all, try the following steps (this solution was described for Vista SP1; it has not been confirmed for other Windows versions):
    • Right click the installer .exe
    • Click Properties
    • On the bottom of the general tab is a message “This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer”
    • Click Unblock
    • Installer should run.
  • You may have corrupt registry information; refer to this page. This is especially common for those rolling back from Win10 to an older version of Windows.
  • If you crash at startup with an error like: “failed to initialise properly code (0x0150002)”, or you get an error that the “side-by-side” configuration is incorrect, or“Firestorm failed to start because the application configuration was incorrect. Reinstalling the application may correct the problem”, please download this and install it, as your system is likely incompatible with the Visual Studio C++ 2005 SDK DLLs: AppFix.exe
  • Open the Firestorm install folder and search for any files named .config - delete any you find.
  • Note that some anti-virus software will result in errors during installation; more information is here.
  • If you are using an ATI (AMD) graphics card, then please refer here for known problems with these cards.
For nVidia issues, plese refer to this page.
Windows 10

If you are using Windows 10, and have an Intel 2000/3000 or older graphics card, please refer to this page if you cannot start Firestorm without crashing.

Windows Vista or Windows 7

If you crash during login, then try setting Firestorm to XP compatibility:

  • Locate your desktop shortcut for Firestorm
  • Right click on the icon and select Properties
  • Select the Compatibility tab
  • Check the “Run this program in compatibility mode for:” and select Windows XP from the drop down
  • Click Apply.

If you get a User Account Control security popup, then please see this page.

linux

If you have just installed Firestorm on a linux system and it will not start, it is highly likely that you are missing some required libraries. You need to verify if this is the case.

You need to open Terminal and cd to the Firestorm install directory. If you are unsure how to locate it, use your linux file manager to find it first; it will help you locate the install directory. Useful shorcuts:

  • ~/ - is your home directory
  • ~/Desktop - is your desktop directory

so for example, from terminal, you would do something like this:

cd ~/Firestorm

Assuming that Firestorm is installed in the directory called Firestorm, in your home.

Once there, copy the following into Terminal:

LD_LIBRARY_PATH="./lib:${LD_LIBRARY_PATH}" ldd bin/do-not-directly-run-firestorm-bin | grep not\ found

This will spit out a list of libraries that are not found on your system. You will need to install these with your package manager.

Viewer wont start due to an error with libstdc++

On the odd occasion, some have reported an error like the one below:

bin/do-not-directly-run-firestorm-bin: /lib64/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.22' not found (required by bin/do-not-directly-run-firestorm-bin)

If you see this error, it means your distributions libstdc++ library isn't compatible (possibly due to age of the library).

If the viewer will not start because of this specific error, try downloading this library, and place it in the lib directory under the viewer install directory.

Note, this solution is to be considered a workaround. Ideally, you should consider investigating matters such as being up to date with operating system updates for your distribution etc.

For popular distributions such as Ubuntu, please ensure you are using a current distribution release. For Ubuntu systems (Ubuntu, Kubuntu etc), please visit https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases to check the status of your distribution. If you are using a distribution that is end of life, or, on the verge of being end of life, please consider updating to a current release.

fs_error_message_list

Error Messages

This is a collection of error messages seen in SL. Some are system messages; some are viewer-generated. The list is by no means complete.

If you get an error message that is not on this page, please:

  • Report it in Firestorm Support English (in-world support group)
  • Or File a Jira alerting us to it (please provide the complete, exact wording of the message; a screenshot is also helpful).
  • If you found a solution or explanation, please let us know that too.

Thanks!

Messages Mentioning Animations

Error Remedy
“PERMISSION_TRIGGER_ANIMATION permission not set” This message usually comes from an AO or other scripted item, dropped in world. It can also come from a badly scripted object that doesn't check it has perms before animating, such as a badly written poseball.

Messages Mentioning Attachments, Clothing, Body Parts, or Other Wearables

Error Remedy
“You can't attach multiple objects to one spot” message when detaching from avatar. That will happen if the user somehow has a coalesced object in their Current Outfit folder. Delete that link from the Current Outfit folder.
“The outfit folder contains no clothing, body parts, or attachments.” See Empty Outfits

Messages Mentioning Certificates

Error Remedy
“Unable to find a valid certificate” See Second Life: Unable_to_find_a_valid_certificate.

Messages Mentioning Credentials or Passwords

Error Remedy
“We were unable to decode the file storing your saved login credentials” (or) “Failed to decode login credentials” See Failed to Decode Login Credentials

Messages Mentioning Regions

Error Remedy
“Unable to create item that has caused problems on this region.” 1) Have the region restarted; this will usually fix it.
2) If a region restart doesn't clear it up, the sim owner may need to ask LL to move the sim to another server channel.
“We are sorry, Linden Lab has discovered degraded performance on your connection to the region you are on. You will need to restart Second Life and log into a new region for the next 30 minutes to an hour. We apologize for the inconvenience.” Delete landmarks, especially favorite landmarks. If they point to an invalid location, it can cause this message.
This may also mean exactly what it says; follow the instructions.

Messages Mentioning SLVoice, SLPlugin, or LLCefLib

Error Remedy
“Do you want the application 'SLVoice' to accept incoming network connections?” Mac – This is a message from your computer's firewall. You should choose “Allow” for voice to work.

Messages Mentioning Voice

Error Remedy
“We're having trouble connecting to your voice server”…(server URL)…“Voice communications will not be available. Please check your network and firewall setup.” This is the usual voice error message. See Voice Troubleshooting

Unclassified Messages

Error Remedy
“Index out of range: 34 not in [ 0, 11]” From the login screen, open the Debug Menu - Show Debug Settings - RenderDebugGL. Set to FALSE. Relaunch the viewer and login.
“newview/llappviewer.cpp(1838): Unhandled exception caught in bool”
_cded LLAppViewer::frame(void): No diagnostic information available
If the error happens in only one region, clear cache
“Must supply a comment for control content” The installation is corrupt. Uninstall Firestorm, delete the installer, clear your web browser's cache (or use a different browser) and download a fresh installer from http://www.firestormviewer.org/downloads/ and install that.
“cannot rez here because the owner does not allow it” (exact wording needed) If you are trying to rez on top of mesh, rez on regular terrain or on a prim instead

Marketplace Messages

Please note that Marketplace has nothing to do with the viewer. These messages are noted simply for convenience.

Error Significance
“We are unable to process your order at this time. Please try again later. You may add this item to your cart or save as a favorite.” This message, noted 2019-02-15, means that you have been blocked by the item's seller.

Firestorm Viewer Downloads For Second Life

OpenSIM versions of FS do not have Havok. That only matters if you're uploading mesh objects and need to specify the mesh physics properties, or if you need to manipulate the region navmesh for pathfinding. The terms of the Havok license prohibit its use anywhere but Second Life, so it's not present in OpenSim versions.

Firestorm Viewer is certified to be free of viruses and malware.

Supported Operating Systems

Windows

  • Windows 7 SP1, 8.1 and 10 32bit and 64bit are supported.
Earlier versions of windows are not supported.
  • Firestorm 5.1.7 & 6.0.1 will NOT even install on Windows XP.
  • Firestorm 5.1.7 & 6.0.1 may install on Windows Vista but is likely to be very unstable.
  • Windows 10 - Firestorm 5.1.7 & 6.0.1 are compatible with Windows 10.
However, if you are running Windows 10 on a system with an older Intel graphics card which does not support Windows 10 - Intel HD 2000, Intel HD 3000 or anything marked as “No” for Windows 10 on this list,
you will only be able to run the 32bit versions of Firestorm 5.1.7 & 6.0.1 even if you have a 64bit version of Windows 10.
Please see this page for detailed instructions if you are running Windows 10 on an older unsupported Intel card and have problems running Firestorm 5.1.7 or 6.0.1.

Mac

  • Mac 10.9 or later OS X versions are supported.
  • MacOS Mojave 10.14 will run Firestorm 5.1.7. viewer and newer.
  • Mac PPC is not supported.
  • Firestorm 5.1.7 & 6.0.1 viewers will NOT run on Mac 10.6, 10.7, 10.8, 10.9, or 10.10.

Linux

  • We use Debian to build our Linux viewer. Any actively maintained, up-to-date Debian-based distribution should be able to run Firestorm. However, due to the variety of distributions and SL's small Linux user-base, we cannot provide testing and support beyond those systems that our own team use. Feel free to submit details of your success and/or failure to any Firestorm team member or to the Firestorm Jira.
  • Some additional libraries and/or packages may be needed; they are listed on this page.
  • Certain older unsupported hardware may not be able to support Firestorm.

fs_windlight

NOTE: The use of square brackets in the examples below indicates information is to be inserted. If they are not part of the windlight setting name, do not include them.

Windlight: Sky and Water

Firestorm supports both the new Region Windlight, introduced by LL, and Parcel Windlight, which was introduced with Phoenix Viewer. Both of these allow you to customize your in-world sky and water, but they operate at different levels: one is region-wide, while the other is restricted to single parcels.

Parcel Windlight allows individual parcel owners to customize their own land as they wish. Region Windlight is most effective on region-wide parcels, or where Region owners wish to provide a consistent experience to visitors.

Controlling Your Experience

There are several ways in which you can control you personal Windlight experience. You can opt to use whatever sky and water settings have been selected by region and/or parcel owners, or you can use your own. You can also create your own sky, water and day cycle settings.

General options concerning Windlight are set in PreferencesFirestorm→ Windlight tab; please refer there for details.

If you wish to use your own day/night cycle, or set to a specific time of day, then use top menu bar→ World → Environment Editor → Environment Settings.

Setting Sky and Water

If you own a region or parcel, you can customize the Windlight settings for yourself, and for others visiting your land.

Region Windlight

Region Windlight can only be changed by region owners or estate managers. It is set by going to the top menu bar and selecting World menu → Region Details. On the window that opens, select Environment. Regions can be set to use the default SL day cycle, a custom day cycle, or fixed time of day. See here for more on how to configure a region's Windlight settings.

Parcel Windlight

Overview

Parcel Windlight sharing is a feature of Firestorm that allows land owners to specify a Windlight preset for the viewer to use while on their land at the parcel level.

How It Works

The land owner just needs to put a plain text string at the end of the parcel description. Parcel description is set in the About Land floater, General tab.

/*Windlight Sky: "[name of the preset]"*/

NOTE: The Windlight name must be exactly as shown in the Windlight list, including all spaces, capitalization, and punctuation. One way to make sure you get the name exactly right is to go to World → Environment Editor → Sky (or Water) Presets → Edit Preset. Select the Windlight you want from the dropdown list, then copy the name.

Windlight water presets are also supported:

/*Windlight Sky: "[name of the preset]" Water: "[name of the WL water preset]"*/

Water settings can be used by its self just like sky if wanted.

Example: If the sky preset is to be [TOR] BIG SUN - Awwyeah and the water preset [TOR] Watermelon juice and the parcel's description is “My awesome place” then the parcel description would be like this:

My awesome place

/*Windlight Sky: "[TOR] BIG SUN - Awwyeah" Water: "[TOR] Watermelon juice"*/

Zones

Parcel WL settings also support zoned settings based on altitude. This allows skyboxes to have a different sky settings than ground level.

/*Windlight Sky @ [lower]m to [upper]m: "[name of preset]"*/

Example: If the parcel wide settings are to be [TOR] MIDDAY - Cheery cyan for the sky and [TOR] Ice-like for the water with a skybox between 500 meters and 600 meters using [TOR] NIGHT - Moony for its sky, the config line would like like so:

/*Windlight Sky: "[TOR] MIDDAY - Cheery cyan" Water: "[TOR] Ice-like" Sky @ 500m to 600m: "[TOR] NIGHT - Moony"*/

The parcel wide settings for sky and water are optional. Zones can be used by themselves leaving the rest of the land at region defaults.

NOTE: There is a 3 meter minimum distance between zones, zones should be at least 10 meters apart and over lap the desired area by a least 5 meters to allow for the 5 second delay on detecting changes.

How To Force Parcel WL To Always Override Region WL

If you have set region WL to use a fixed sky or a custom day cycle, region WL will always override parcel WL unless you use the RegionOveride flag

For example:

/*Windlight Sky: "[name of the preset]" Water: "[name of the WL water preset]"RegionOverride*/

Advanced

If there is not enough space in the description for the desired config line, there are several optional formatting and whitespace

/*Sky:"[preset]"Water:"[preset]"*/

Is the same as:

/*Windlight Sky:"[preset]" Water:"[preset]"*/

Zones can be shortened as well:

/*Sky@[lower]-[upper]:"[preset]"*/

Notes & Troubleshooting

Be sure to use “straight quotes,” both double and single, not “curly quotes.”

How to Replace Your Firestorm.exe in Windows 10

If you have certain Intel HD graphics, and have upgraded your PC to Windows 10, your graphics card will not be fully supported by Intel. If you have this issue, you will be unable to log in. You will get the following error dialog box:

Firestorm is unable to run because your video card drivers did not install properly or are out of date, or are for unsupported hardware. Please make sure you have the latest video card drivers, and even if you do have the latest, try reinstalling them. If you continue to receive this message, contact the Second Life Support Portal

This is not a function of the viewer, but instead is a function of the drivers provided by Intel for your computer. However, we have developed a workaround that should help most users with this issue continue to have the ability to use the Firestorm viewer.

Note: This fix is only available for 32-bit versions of Firestorm. Even if you have a 64-bit version of Windows 10, and usually use the 64-bit version of Firestorm, you will still need to use the 32-bit viewer. The fix is required for 5.0.11 and 5.0.7. The fix is not required for 6.0.1. and 5.1.7 (available as an option). There is no fix that will work with the 64-bit version.
Important: Do NOT run in Compatibility mode.
Uninstall any 64bit versions of Firestorm.
Download and uninstall a 32bit version of Firestorm; you will be replacing one file, not the entire install. Downloads
  1. Verify that your graphics card is one of the affected versions. You can find a table of affected versions here: Graphics Drivers Supported Operating Systems, but most frequently we have seen Intel HD 2000 and Intel HD 3000. You should be able to verify your graphics in the system info of your computer.
  2. Below, select the zip file that is correct for your download, either the 32-bit Havok version or the 32-bit OpenSim version, and download it to your computer. You will need to unzip the file and save it on your computer in a location you will remember.
  3. On your computer, open File Explorer. (If it isn't on your taskbar you may need to use the search to find it.) When you open it, select the View tab at the top of the page and check the box on the right hand side that says File Name Extensions.
  4. In File Explorer, navigate to This PC then Local Disk (C:) (or the location you normally download Firestorm, if it differs) and then navigate to Program Files (x86). Open Program Files (x86), locate the Firestorm folder, and open it. In the Firestorm folder, locate the Firestorm-Release.exe file and delete it.
  5. Replace it with the Firestorm.exe file that was in the zipped folder you downloaded from the web site.

You should now be able to run Firestorm on your PC.

fs_voice - [By Operating System]

Voice Issues

Please note: Viewers play a minor part in voice functionality. The bulk of voice support is given by the external application called SLVoice, which is made by the SL voice provider, Vivox. Voice failures are almost always due to one of the following reasons:

  • Your ISP is throttling or blocking the voice service;
  • failure of the Vivox service;
  • voice issues on the region you are on;
  • voice being throttled by bandwidth set incorrectly - please check it by following the instructions here;
  • voice hardware (mic, headset) not configured correctly in your operating system settings;
  • voice hardware not configured correctly in the viewer;
  • another application has your voice hardware in use (example, Skype);
  • your anti virus software has “mangled” the voice application; see steps on this page: here.

  • your firewall is blocking slvoice. Add slvoice to your firewall's exclusion/allow list.
Please go to Voice Echo Canyon when trying to get voice to work. If voice is working correctly for you, anything you say there will be echoed back to you. Once there, relog to last location.

Known Issues

*macOS 10.14 Mojave*: No voice input using Firestorm-Beta 6.0.1. See [Mac Mojave] SL Voice No Input on 6.0.1. You may download and install a nightly test version of Firestorm 6.0.2. to use until next release which contains a fix for this issue.

Unable to connect to voice server 'www.bhr.vivox.com'

The IP address of the server 'www.bhr.vivox.com' recently changed to 74.201.103.238 so anyone having a problem can check to see what address their system sees for that name - if it's not that address, it's probably wrong. A simple reboot may resolve this issue. If not, see DNS Fail - General steps for help fixing this.

nslookup command how-to: WindowsMacLinux

Since 4.7.9, voice has not always connected to the voice servers. This is due to some coding issues that we inherited from the official SL viewer and that code's interaction with the latest voice files. The issue is documented on LL's Jira. A workaround is to disable and then re-enable voice. But if you're presented with the voice connection failure message that tells you “Voice communications will not be available”, you may need to disable voice and then relog before voice will try to reconnect.

Steps:

  • Go to Preferences → Sound & Media → Voice, and untick “Enable Voice.”
  • Relog.
  • Wait 10-20 seconds, or until the viewer has finished rezzing the scene.
  • Re-enable voice.

Version 5.1.7., voice crashes when turning on microphone. See BUG-225293 and FIRE-22940
Fixed Firestorm-Beta 6.0.1.
Note that the SLVoice executable in this viewer is not compatible with most older viewers; do not copy it into other viewers.http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Release_Notes/Second_Life_Release/5.1.8.518593

Disable When Not in Use

Most voice connection issues happen when the viewer tries to connect to voice during the login process. The workaround is to disable voice before you log out, and then only enable it after logging in when you need it. You can toggle Voice from the Media Controls at the top of the viewer (not enabled by default for Vintage or Latency skins) by hovering over the speaker icon and then checking or unchecking the last checkbox, or by going to Preferences ⇒ Sound & Media ⇒ Voice and checking or unchecking the top option.

Ensure Headset Properly Connected

If you have issues hearing but not being heard, or vice versa, then make sure that your headset is properly connected to your computer. Unplug it, then plug it back in, making sure it is fully inserted.

And on a related note, if you plug your headset in while logged into SL, you will very likely have to relog to get it to be recognised.

Check Voice Settings in your Operating System

Due to the many different versions of each operating system (Windows, linux distros, Mac OSx's), it is very difficult to give specifics for each one. Nonetheless, make sure that your operating system is correctly configured for voice: that voice is going to your headset (or speakers, as you prefer), and that your mic is enabled and configured.

If you can hear people but cannot be heard, or vice versa, it is most likely a problem in this area.

A bit more specifically, for Windows and linux, check in Mixer that SLvoice is listed, and not muted. Check that input and output devices are correct. For Mac, look in the Sound Preference pane.

Some details provided below.

Check Voice Settings in the Viewer

  • Go to PreferencesSound & Media -> Sounds. Find the Voice Chat slider and make sure it is not all to the left. Try increasing the volume.
  • Make sure that Voice chat is enabled on that preferences tab.
  • go to PreferencesSound & Media -> Voice. Click on Audio Device Settings. For Input and Output, use the dropdowns to select your voice devices (headset, microphone, whatever you use). It is best not to leave these at Default.
  • Close Preferences and locate the Mic button on the button bar. Click the Lock checkbox then the actual button, and try speaking (hopefully, you went to Voice Echo Canyon so you can test).

Try Reinstalling Drivers

Try reinstalling the drivers for your sound card, if you have one. Sometimes, these drivers conflict with the sound component of graphics card drivers. Similarly, you may have success by reinstalling your graphics card driver.

If voice still does not work, then continue working through this page.

Voice Is Intermittent

If you find that voice cuts in and out, particularly right after a TP, and at the same time, you notice that things are not rezzing in for you very well (avatars, objects, etc), then the likely cause is that your router is being “overwhelmed” with texture transfers. So reboot your router/modem, and then your computer, and see if the problem is solved.

You can also try adjusting your bandwidth as explained here.

If that does not help, then proceed with the section below.

Voice Worked Fine but Suddenly Doesn't Work

Chances are good that the problem lies with the SL servers or the voice provider, Vivox. Still, there are things you can try:

  • Open Preferences, and go to Sound & Media → Voice, and click Reset (circular arrow).
  • Shut down all applications that use, or can use, voice - like Skype, etc. Then relog.
  • What sometimes helps to get voice working is disabling voice in PreferencesSound & Media -> Voice, hitting Ok, waiting a minute and then enabling voice and click Ok. When these methods fail (assuming voice usually works for you) it is usually the Vivox voice servers that are the problem.
  • If this does not work at your current location, go to a region where other people are able to use voice at this time. One possibility is Firestorm Social, but any region where voice is known to be functioning is fine. Disable voice in PreferencesSound & Media -> Voice. Relog, using the last location selection on your login screen. Wait a couple of minutes. Reenable voice. Wait another couple of minutes (in other words, give the connection time to be established). If voice comes on, then the problem may have been the region you were in before. Was voice disabled there? If not, a region restart might solve the problem.
  • Go to Preferences → Network & Files -> Connection and reduce your bandwidth setting to 500 (if it is not already set there). Repeat the above step to toggle voice off and back on. See here for more information on setting your bandwidth properly, but bear in mind that lower levels than those calculated there may be necessary for troubleshooting purposes.
  • Log out of the viewer, then check Task Manager (or equivalent) and see if SLVoice is still running. If so, kill the process, restart the viewer and see if voice connects.
  • Try a relog, or even reboot your router/modem, and then your computer. 1)
  • Sometimes device settings can reset, so check in PreferencesSound & Media -> Voice→ Audio Device Settings, to be sure that the input and output are set correctly.
  • HTTP fetching may be overloading your router; please try the suggestions given here; if they do not help, revert the changes made then return to this page and continue.

Never Been Able to Get Voice to Work

  • Does your headset/microphone work outside of SL? ie when using Skype, Yahoo or MSN
  • Is your voice chat volume turned up and not muted?
  • Is the SLVoice.exe (simply SLVoice on Mac) that is in the Firestorm folder in the exceptions/allowed list for your firewall? If your firewall is turned off, turn it on and add the SLVoice.exe (or SLVoice) anyway.
If your Firewall has SLVoice listed twice, then remove both instances, and allow it again. For Win10, make sure that SLVoice has Private unchecked, and Public checked. If you had these set differently, change them, then close the window, log out of SL, reboot.
  • Check the bandwidth you are actually getting and what you have set in Preferences → Network & Files → Connection. Please refer to this page for specifics.
  • Go to top menu, Advanced → Debug Settings, and in the window that opens, type: Cmdlinedisablevoice - then ensure this is set to FALSE. (Use Crtl-Alt-D to enable the Advanced menu, if it isn't.)

By Operating System

Windows Vista and Windows 7

Try disabling compatibility mode, if enabled:

  • Locate your desktop shortcut for Firestorm (if you use the pinned application on the task bar, make sure you pin the Firestorm shortcut, not the running viewer)
  • Right click on the icon and select Properties
  • Select the Compatibility tab
  • Find “Run this program in compatibility mode for:” if it is set then disable this
  • Make sure “Run as Administrator” is enabled (if this is greyed out, then you're probably already running as administrator, so you can ignore this step).
  • Click Apply.
  • Now log back into the viewer, and see if voice works (do you have the white dot over your head?). If not, go to PreferencesSound & Media -> Voice and disable voice; wait a few moments, then re-enable. 2)

On Windows 7, if you find yourself being able to talk but not hear what others say, then a possible solution is to use the sound drivers from Vista. (This needs further confirmation.)

Windows 10

Refer to this for a possible problem/solution. Make sure to check all voice-related settings in Windows carefully.

If voice works but sounds very distorted, see the "Voice Is Distorted" section of the Win 10 issues page.

Mac

All Mac Operating Systems

If you are unable to connect to voice and you are also having problems with teleporting and/or loading your friends list, perhaps along with other things, then see the “Mac-specific” section of this page for instructions and more explanation.

Mojave (10.14.x) (but possibly could happen on others)

Check Mac System Prefs → Security & Privacy → Privacy → microphone.

If you seem to have voice working (voice dots and green speech indicators show) but can't speak/hear, and your device doesn't show in PreferencesSound & Media -> Voice→ Audio Device Settings, you may be able to use your Mac Audio MIDI Setup to fix this.

  1. Go to your Mac Utilities folder and open Audio MIDI Setup.
  2. Look for your headset/mic in the list.
  3. If your device shows there, proceed:
  4. Click the + sign and choose “Create Multi-Output Device.”
  5. In the new Multi-Output Device that appears, select your headset/mic.
  6. If you have Firestorm open, relog so it can find the new Device.
  7. Go to PreferencesSound & Media -> Voice→ Audio Device Settings, and select your new “Multi-Output Device.”
  • This fix has not been extensively tested. Feedback and suggestions are welcome.

linux

Every linux distro is different; and each distro may have more than one window manager to further complicate things. So tips can't be “absolute”; you will need to experiment and see what works for you. The following have been suggested by some as effective. But first….

In the Firestorm install directory, there's a text file (originally from LL) with tips on getting voice to work in linux. If you haven't read that, then you can try to see if it helps.

  • Make sure you have ALSA and/or FMODEX available. FMODEX is supplied with Firestorm, normally. If you look at Help → About Firestorm, you should see a line that resembles this:
Audio Driver Version: OpenAL, version 1.1 ALSOFT 1.11.753 / OpenAL Community / OpenAL Soft: PulseAudio Software
If that says “none” then you have no audio driver available to Firestorm and need to install one.
  • Edit the firestorm shell script and remove the #. That will force LL to use FMOD rather than ALSA. Some say this is how to get voice working.
#export LL_BAD_OPENAL_DRIVER=x
  • Some swear that the problem is PulseAudio, so you can try to remove that from your system. Be warned, however, that this could cause more problems than it solves. Make sure you remove only Pulse and not half the OS.
  • Be sure to have the correct devices select in Firestorm for voice:
Preferences → Sound & Media → Voice → Audio Device Settings (button)
Input and output may not work if left at default; they may need to go to a specific device like “ALSA Capture on [device name]”.
  • Run ldd across all the vivox libraries and ensure no missing libraries are present (set LD_LIBRARY_PATH to point to your local firestorm lib dir before running this command so you don't get erroneous results). any missing libs need to have their 32 bit (i386) version installed.

Below are results for selected linux distros, based on input from Phoenix and Firestorm users. This will be updated as more information becomes available.

  • ubuntu 18.04 / linux Mint 19 64-bit + FS64. You may need to install a few extra libs:3)
sudo apt-get install libidn11:i386 libuuid1:i386 libstdc++6:i386

Note: If you experience the issue where voice connects and you are not able to hear audio from people speaking, you might need to install the libasound2-plugins:i386 package (for Debian based systems). The reason for this is that libasound_module_pcm_pulse.so is required on some systems. For non debian systems, install the relevant package that will add the 32 bit version of the library to your system (this might be alsa-plugins-pulseaudio.i686 on RHEL based systems (CentOS, Fedora))

  • ubuntu 16.04 64 bit + FS64: The following command installs a few 32-bit libs and voice works after. Maybe you need fewer 32-bit libs but that needs further investigation.
Apparently, arch requires these as well - or some of them - though the exact lib name may be different.
sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio:i386 libidn11:i386 libuuid1:i386 libstdc++6:i386
  • In the end you should have these libraries installed, in their 32 bit variant. The version numbers here are subject to change in later releases, but it should give you a good starting point on what to look for: ld-2.27.so libc-2.27.so libdl-2.27.so libgcc_s.so.1 libm-2.27.so libpthread-2.27.so libresolv-2.27.so librt-2.27.so libz.so.1.2.11 libXau.so.6.0.0 libasound.so.2.0.0 libcap.so.2.25 libdbus-1.so.3.19.6 libgcrypt.so.20.2.2 libgpg-error.so.0.24.2 libidn.so.12.6.0 liblz4.so.1.8.1 liblzma.so.5.2.3 libpulse.so.0.20.3 libstdc++.so.6.0.25 libsystemd.so.0.21.0 libuuid.so.1.3.0 libxcb.so.1.1.0 libpulsecommon-12.2.so
  • A new option is a debug setting, FSLinuxEnableWin32VoiceProxy, which when enabled will cause Firestorm to launch the Windows version of SLVoice.exe via WINE. To use this, you need to ensure that WINE is installed; install WINE with your package manager. An existing WINE profile/prefix is not needed, but will be used if present. Depending on your system, it may take several seconds before voice comes up.
    NOTES:
    * If you disable voice and then re-enable too quickly, WINE may not successfully restart and voice may fail to re-enable. If you get the warning that there was a problem connecting, you will need to relog before voice will re-enable. Thirty seconds between disable and enable should be enough.
    * There is a known related issue here
    * To speed up the initial loading of voice, use
    wine-preloader $HOME/path/to/firestorm/bin/win32/SLVoice.exe

    before launching Firestorm
