Preferences - Move & View

NOTE: Photographers can access and change many of the camera settings quickly and conveniently via the Phototools Camera Window.

For a general introduction on how to move your avatar and control your view, refer to this page.

View

  • View angle: Affects the camera field of view.
  • Distance: Changes the distance that camera view follows your avatar.
  • Transition Time: How long it takes for the camera to adjust to quickly changed camera positions/angles.
  • Smoothing: Affects how smoothly the camera moves.
  • Disable camera constraints: Allows you to move your camera further away from your avatar. (Same as top menu bar→ Advanced → Disable camera constraints.)
  • Don't use the mouse wheel to control zoom level of the camera: By default, scrolling the mouse wheel results in the camera zooming in or out; enabling this option will disable that feature.
  • Automatically pose avatar during (select one or more):
    • Build/Edit: When selected, the camera automatically moves to center on the object you're editing.
    • Appearance: (set by default) When selected, the camera automatically zooms in on your avatar when you enter Appearance mode. It also automatically focuses as you select different Body Parts and Clothes tabs. Deselect this to leave the camera where it is.
      • Add Additional Lighting: If enabled, when you go into Appearance, you will have extra lighting to iluminate your avatar. (This option is not available if the one above is disabled.)
  • Clicking your avatar keeps camera position: When enabled, clicking on your avatar will focus the camera at the point that you click on your avatar.
  • Reset camera position after teleport (within a region): If enabled, the camera will revert to the default position after a TP within the region; when disabled, it will remain where it is, relative to your avatar.
  • Reset camera position on avatar movement: If you enable this, the camera will revert to its default position whenever you move your avatar; disable this to inhibit the camera reset. Useful when taking photos, if you need to move your avatar a bit without the camera moving from where you are pointing it.
  • Disable minimum camera zoom distance: Allows the camera to zoom as far in as you want, allowing you to see inside prims.
  • Turn avatar towards camera direction on reset view: If this is enabled (old default behavior), then when you hit Esc to reset your camera, the avatar will turn to face whatever direction your camera was pointing at when you pressed Esc; with this disabled, your avatar will not move, but instead the camera will rotate round behind it.
  • Allow the camera to move without constraints through prims: If enabled will not keep your camera view on the same side of a prim as your avatar. For example put your back against a wall, and you see the other side of the wall. When disabled, your point of view would be over your head, and you see inside.
  • Show the default camera controls minifloater always as opaque: If enabled, the camera conrols window will always be opaque.
  • Render blocked (muted) avatars as particle cloud: Will render muted avatars as clouds.
  • Re-render temporary derendered objects after teleport: If enabled, temporarily derendered objects will remain derendered until you teleport; otherwise, they stay derendered until your relog, or a manually re-rendered via the asset blacklist window.

Mouselook

  • Enable Mouselook functionality: Enable this if you wish to use Mouselook.
Mouselook can be entered either by scrolling forward with your mousewheel, or by using the 'M' key on your keyboard (which first equires enabling WASD for movement, in Preferences->General), or from top menu, Advanced → Shortcuts.
    • Show avatar in Mouselook: Will allow you to see yourself when in mouselook. Does not show the entire avatar, but looking down you would see your feet.
    • Show user interface in mouselook: Normally, in mouselook, user interface elements such as the inventory window, IM windows, etc, are hidden. If you enable this, they will remain on screen.
    • Don't close Conversations and Radar window when changing into Mouselook: By default, these windows close when you go into mouselook; enabel this if you prefer that they stay open.
    • Enable context menus in Mouselook: If you enable this, you will be able to open the pie/context menu using Alt Right click.
    • Leave Mouselook using the scroll wheel: If enabled, then you can exit mouselook by scrolling back with your mouse scrollwheel.
    • Show Mouselook Instructions: Will show the “press esc to exit mouselook” message while in mouselook.
    • Show Mouselook Crosshairs: when enabled, crosshairs are displayed in mouselook mode.
    • Enable combat features: Enables IFF (Identification Friend or Foe).
      • Draw target markers: Draws arrows pointing to friend/foe avatars.
      • Range: Max range for the above.
    • Mouselook mouse sensitivity slider: This affects how far your avatar turns in mouselook. Moving the slider to the right causes your avatar to turn farther When you move the mouse, with the same amount of mouse movement.

Movement

  • Arrow keys always move me: The arrow keys move your avatar around if you hit them while chatting in the main chatbar. Disable this if you prefer to use arrows keys to move back/foward in text you have typed, so you can edit it.
  • Pressing letter keys affects movement (i.e. WASD) instead of starting local chat: Enabel this if you wish to have the WAD keys move your avatar.
  • Use AZERTY keyboard layout: Enable this if you have an AZERTY keyboard; if your keyboard has a QWERTY layout, leave it disabled.
  • Tap-tap-hold to run: Allows you to double-tap and hold the up arrow key to run.
  • Fly/Land on holding up/down: Allows holding the PgUp or PgDown button to fly/land, respectively.
  • Enable crouch toggle mode: If this is enabled, pressing PgDown will put you into a crouch; you will remain that way till you press it again. Otherwise, you need to press and hold PgDown to stay in a crouch.
  • Disable waiting for pre-jump and landing animations: In effect, a fast jump. Same as the option in the top menu, Avatar→ Movement → Quickjump.
  • Disable avatar turning to face camera locally when walking backward: If this is left off, your avatar will turn around to face the camera when you walk backward.
  • Turn avatar towards a selected object: Disable this option if you do not wish your avatar to turn to an object when you select or edit it.
  • If built in LSL Bridge movelock is active…
    • Always re-lock position after region change: If you enabled the movelock function in top menu, Avatar → Movement → Move Lock (Ctrl-Alt-P), then this keeps the lock enabled if you teleport.
    • Lock and unlock position after stopping or starting movement: With this setting enabled, you will be able to move even if movelock is enabled; movelock will still prevent being pushed.
  • Single click on land: Clicking a spot on the ground can either do nothing, or cause you to walk to that spot.
  • Double click on land: Double clicking a spot on the ground can:
    • Do nothing
    • Cause you to walk to that spot
    • Teleport you to that spot. (See also the Firestorm Bridge.)

Teleports

  • Play sound effect when teleporting: Allows you to hear the teleport sound effect.
  • Always fly after teleporting: If enabled, your avatar will automatically fly when arriving at a new destination, after a teleport.
  • Always show the Teleport cancel button: This allows teleports to be cancelled once started. Note that cancelling a TP in progress may log you out.
  • Disable Teleport Beacons: Disables the red indicator arrows and the vertical beacons that sometimes are shown after a teleport. Thus if you do not land at the exact location you wanted to (due to teleport routing), you will not have the beacon to guide you to your intended destination.
  • Disable Teleport Screens: Disables the black teleport screen during all teleports.
  • Do not close the map when teleporting: Enable this is you want the map to stay open after a TP.

Map & Minimap

Minimap Options

  • Enable Minimap Rotation: When enabled the minimap will rotate when your avatar turns.

  • Show additional region information on World Map: Displays avatar count and maturity level on the world map.
  • Show grid coordinates on the world map: Display regions' grid coordinates on the world map.
  • Enable double click teleports on the World map: Allow teleport to a location on the world map by double clicking.

  • Use legacy inventory offer accept/decline messages: If enabled, the viewer will only send accept and decline messages after pressing the appropriate button. If disabled, the accept response will be sent automatically as soon as the inventory offer has been received. This option has no effect if inventory offers are accepted automatically (option directly above).

Logs & Transcripts Tab

Here you can enable/disable saving chat logs, as well as add timestamps and/or dates. Chat log locations are defined in PreferencesNetwork & Files -> Directories.

The term Log now refers to the correlation between avatar name and UUID and the start time a conversation was opened. Transcripts are the actual text of the conversations. This is explained in more detail here.

  • Logs/Transcripts Drop-down: Select what you wish to save:
    • Log and transcripts
    • Log only
    • No log or transcripts
  • Clear log… Click this to erase the stored log.
  • Delete transcripts: Click this to erase any saved transcripts.

  • Add date stamp to transcript filenames: If enabled, log file names will have the current date included in the file name. (not recommended)
  • Use built-in transcript viewer: Enable this to use the built-in text viewer when accessing chat history.

LookAt Tab

“Look At” refers to crosshairs which show where an avatar's camera is focused (normally, by Alt-Clicking on something). It doesn't necessarily mean that the person is looking at that point, however, since the camera view can be moved after focusing by means of the camera controls.

  • Show look at targets: Global toggle to enable the look at cross hairs.
  • Show names for look at targets: Here you can select whether to show avatar names on the LookAt crosshairs:
    • None
    • Complete name

    • Legacy name
    • User name
  • Don't show me my own look at target: If enabled, this option inhibits the display of your own crosshairs on your screen.
  • Render lines to lookat target: Draw a line from an avatar to their lookat target.
  • My Look at targets:
    • Don't send my look at targets to others: Prevents your camera focus point from showing to others.

    • Don't send my selection target hints: Prevents your selection pointer from showing to others.

Autoresponse 1 Tab

The fields here allow you to customize autoresponse messages, to be sent when your have some of the autorespond mode set from the top menu, Comm → Online Status.

  • Automatic response when in UNAVAILABLE (ie, BUSY) mode: Put the busy autoresponse message you want sent in this text box. To actually enable autorespond, go to the top menu bar→ Comm → Online Status.
  • Automatic response to all avatars when in AUTORESPONSE to everyone mode: The message here is sent to people who IM you, if you enable Comm → Online Status → Autorespond.
  • Automatic response to non-friends when in AUTORESPONSE TO NON-FRIENDS mode: Similar to the above, but sent when Comm → Online Status → Autorespond to non-friends is enabled.
  • Send autoresponse when in AWAY mode: If enabled, a message will be sent if someone IMs you while you are Away, set in Comm → Online status → away.

Preferences - User Interface

3D World

  • Show Hover Tips: This allows you to set what hover tips, if any, you see. Disable this to disable all hover tips. Otherwise, enable it and then you can opt to indicate which hover tips you want to show:
    • on All Objects
    • on Land

    • Hovertip Trigger Delay: Allows you to choose how long your mouse has to hover over something before you get a hovertip. You can specify different delays for:
      • Tooltips
      • Avatars
      • Objects

    • Show extended information in hover tips: If this is enabled, hovertips will show details about the object your mouse is over, such as the owner, prim count, etc. Otherwise, hover tips will show just the object name.
    • Show avatar group titles in hovertips: If enabled, avatars' current group titles will display, along with the name, when your mouse over them.
  • Floating text fade distance (in m): Sets the distance where floating text starts to fade.
  • Flaoting text fade range (in m): Sets the range it takes for floating text to go from fully visible to fully invisible.

2D Overlay

  • UI Scaling (may cause side effects): Adjust the slider to choose the UI size. The maximum value depends on your OS: Eg, for Win10, it is 4.5, for earlier Windows, 2.5.
NOTE that too high may mean you cannot see all of your UI. This may also “break” some UI elements.
    • Automatically detect UI scaling factor: (Windows only) Have FS determine the best possible value for your system.
  • Script Dialogs per Object: Controls how many dialogs get opened:
    • One per object - means if a second one opens either the first or second will not appear.
    • One per Object & Channel - means you can have more than one per object but only if they use different channels to interact.
    • Unconstrained - means you can see as many menus/dialogs as may be generated.
      • Remove “Block” button: Popup windows that are generated by scripts have a “Block” button on them; this allows you to easily mute the object that sent the popup, in cases of popup spam griefing. If you find this confusing and think you might click it by mistake, then you can disable it here.
Note: muting an object also mutes the object owner; do not block popups from vendors without very good reason, or you will not receive items you purchase from them.
You can review your listed of blocked people and objects in the Block/Mute List.
  • Script Dialogs Position: You can select where on the screen scripted popup windows should appear.
    • Animate Script Dialogs: Enable this to replicate old style (V1) behavior when opening script dialogs. Only works if they open at the top of the screen.
  • Visible rows per script dialog: Maximum number of lines visible in a script dialog window.
  • Use Pie Menu: Allows you to have pie menus (on by default). If disabled, this gives the V2-style vertical drop down instead. You can override the colors used by the pie menu in PreferencesColors -> Miscellaneous.
    • Enable text animation: If enabled, the text within the pie is also animated.
    • Enable outer ring shade: Adds shading to the outside of the ring, to further draw attention to the selected “slice”.
  • Group Group Notices and chiclets in Top Right: Moves other dialogs (group notices, payments, etc.) to the topright corner (V1 style).
  • Hide group and IM chat chiclets: If this is enabled, the chiclets representing open and new IM and group chat messages will be hidden, leaving on the general chat bubble; if this is clicked, you will get a list of open IMs/groups chats.
  • Use legacy list layout for Notifications window: Enable this to use the old style notifications window.
  • Flashing IM tabs override: allows you to fine tune how long and fast the IM tabs flash:
    • Number of times IM tabs flash
    • IM tab flash rate (Hz)

Top Bars

Status bar

  • Show traffic indicator in upper right corner of the screen: Enable this if you want to display a small traffic meter in the upper right corner of the menu bar. This will show your current packet loss (left bar), and bandwidth usage (right bar).
    • Use legacy period mean per second display for lag meter: If enabled, Firestorm will use the legacy method of showing the period mean per second value in the meter instead of the current observed value.
    • Clicking on traffic indicator opens Statistics instead of the Lag meter: Opens Statistics instead of Lag meter.
  • Show media controls in top menu: If you disable this, the media controls are removed from the upper right of the screen. You can still acess volume controls in PreferencesSound & Media -> Sounds, if needed, or just re-enable this option.
  • Show Location in top menu: Shows the current region and parcel names in the top menu bar.
    • Show simulator channel in top menu: Shows the region channel name in the status bar. Nothing is shown for Main Channel regions.
  • Show Menu Search: Enable searching the top menu bar.
  • Show Currency Balance: Display your L$ balance in the menu bar.
  • Enable mouse rollover popup on status bar menu icons: If enabled, displays tooltips when you mouse over items in the top menu bar.
  • Show Favorites Bar: Display the contents of your Favorites folder.
  • Show Navigation and Search Bar: Add this bar to the top of the screen.
    • Show Search Bar: Allows the search portion of the navigation bar to be enabled/disabled

Interface Windows

  • Open avatar profile directly when clicking on its name: If enabled, when you click on someone's name in chat, it opens the profile immediately. With this disabled, you get a small summary window.
  • Use web profiles by default: Displays user profiles as web profiles rather than in a profile window.
  • Disable automatic opening of block list: Enable this option if you do not want the block (mute) list to open when you block a person or object.
  • 'Friends' and 'Groups' in 'Comm' menu opens the V3 based windows: If enabled, Friends and Groups will open in the People panel; otherwise they will open in the Contacts panel.
  • Use stand-alone windows:
    • Group profiles: If enabled, group profile windows will open in separate windows; if disabled, they will open in the same window, with the second opened replacing the first.
    • Teleport history: if enabled, teleport history will open in a window separate from the landmarks window.
    • Block/mute list: Keeps the list of blocked residents separate from the people panel.
    • Landmarks, place details and teleport history details: Similar to the above, but keeps each type of “location” window separate, rather than grouping onto a single window.
  • Extend teleport history by: Enable these options to record additional information in your teleport history:
    • Position
    • Date
  • Contact list options: Options concerning what is shown in your friends list, and how it is sorted.
Note that some options have no effect if you have the corresponding option disabled in Prererences → General. For example, if you have disabled display names, then sorting your friends list by display name will have no effect, and therefore is best set to Username.
    • Visible name columns: Here you can select which name colums to shwo in your friends list: username, display name, or full name (see below).
    • Sort list by: What to use to sort your friends list, username or display name.
    • Show full name as: a full name can be shown as Username (Display name), or Display name (username).
    • Show permissions column: If enabled, this shows what permissions you have granted to each friends (eg, online status, edit rights, showing location on map, etc), and which they have granted to you.
    • Show search filter: adds a search box to the list window.
  • Inventory Options:
    • Hide empty system folders from inventory: If enabled, the inventory window will not display any system folders (eg, Favorites, Landmarks, etc) that have nothing in them.
    • Show the Received Items folder in normal inventory: If enabled, this folder will be show in the normal inventory list of folders, rather than as a panel under the folder list.
      • Always show Received Items buttons at th bottom of inventory: Only available if the option above is enabled. When this is on, you will also have the button showing on the inventory window.
    • Allow separate search terms on each tab in inventory: If enabled, you can enter different words/phrases in the search bar of the Inventory window: each of Inventory, Recent and Worn can be searched independently.

Derendering and How to Reverse It

It is possible to make an object or avatar “invisible” - for you only. It is useful in many situations, such as photography, for example, if an object is in your view and you do not wish it in the picture.

NOTE: There is a tutorial video on this topic here.

Blacklisting

This is permanent derender; it will survive teleports and relogging. For more information, see the Asset Blacklist.

  • To derender an object: Right click it and select Derender → Blacklist from the menu.
  • To rerender an object: From the top menu bar, select World → Asset Blacklist. Find the item you wish to remove, click it to highlight it, then click the Remove selected items from blacklist button.
You will then need to force a view refresh: TP out and back OR relog.

Temporary

Temporary derendering will last until a view change is forced in some way.

  • To derender an object: Right click it and select Derender → Temporary from the menu.
  • To rerender an object: Simply teleport out of the region, and then back, or relog.

Note that in PreferencesMove & View -> View, there is Re-render temporary derendered objects after teleport, which controls whether temporarily derendered obejcts will re-render after TP or not until after a relog.

Music and Media Issues

This section covers issues related to audio, video and some aspects of search.

General

  • For situations where you cannot hear audio, be it streaming music, or the audio from a movie/video, the first thing to do is check that:
    • streaming music and/or media are enabled in PreferencesSound & Media -> Sounds;
    • volumes for music and media are not at minimum;
    • audio is configured correctly in your operating system (ie, Windows, linux, OSX), that sounds is going to the correct device (ie, speakers or headset), and so on;
    • You have not blocked the stream/video; check Preferences → Sound & Media → Media → Manage Media Sites.
    • for streaming music, test the music URL in your external web browser, to make sure that the URL actually works.
  • HTTP fetching may be overloading your router; please try the suggestions given here; if they do not help, revert the changes made then return to this page and continue.

Videos Are Not Playing, or Black/Blank Search Page

General

  • In Preferences → Sound & Media → Sounds, make sure the “Enabled” checkbox to the right of the “Media” slider is checked
    (For audio, check “Streaming Music”)
  • In Preferences → Sound & Media → Media, check “Allow inworld scripts to play media”
  • Make sure the issue is not with the specific television you are using, by attempting to view videos on a television that plays video normally for other Firestorm users.
  • Make sure that “Enable plugins” is ticked in Preferences → Network & Files -> Connection, else the external media plugin can not be executed, and you may see a message saying: Adobe Flash Player or an HTML5 supported browser is required for video playback.

Check the SLPlugin file

  • Relog Firestorm and open the Search window
  • Go to your computer processes and look for “slplugin.exe”
    • For Windows users, go to Task Manager → Processes Tab
    • For Mac users, go to Activity Monitor → My Processes (usually by default, but you can check top right drop down)
    • For Linux users, go to Command Terminal, and type “ps aux”
    • You may see four instances of the slplugin running (that is normal behavior)
    • If you do not see any instances of slplugin running, that is the cause of media failing
  • If slplugin is not running, disable all firewall and virus protection (including anti-virus software and windows or other operating system firewalls)
  • Relog and attempt video playback again
  • If it works, you will need to stop your firewall/virus protection from blocking the slplugin file by granting it appropriate permissions in your firewall/virus protection software
  • NOTE: If you have several viewers installed, you will have to allow to each one access through your firewall, as well as to SLPlugin for each one.
  • If all of the above does not resolve the issue, you can try downloading the latest SL Viewer 2 viewer and replacing your Firestorm slplugin file with the one from Viewer 2.

Flash

  • Windows users:
    • In order to play Flash format videos (e.g., YouTube videos), you must have the Opera & Chromium version of the Adobe Flash plugin installed. Unless you already have this specific version of Flash installed already, you will need to get the Opera & Chromium Flash plugin from Adobe.
  • Linux users
    • You need to have the pepperflash plugin installed, which can be satisfied by installing pepperflashplugin-nonfree for Chromium
  • Mac users
    • Mac users currently need the Safari & Firefox version of Adobe Flash plugin installed. Download it from Adobe.
  • NOTE: If you experience graphics driver crashes on nVidia cards when viewing Flash media (for example Youtube) both in-world and on a website and/or severe drops in your GPU clock mhz on any card then you will need to disable hardware acceleration on Flash Player. To do this, go to Youtube and Pick any video. Right click the video play area to bring up the options and follow the instructions here.

QuickTime

QuickTime is no longer needed for Windows users (and never was for linux users). Mac users, however, still need to have it.

YouTube

  • If YouTube videos suddenly will not play, and you just get a white screen, go to PreferencesPrivacy -> General, and click on Clear History, then try again.
  • See also the Flash section, above.

I Hear No Music or Sound from Movies

Go to PreferencesSound & Media -> Sounds and make sure the volume sliders for streaming music and media are not all to the left and that there is no mute symbol (red no entry sign) on the speaker icon next to those. Make sure the Master Volume is not all to the left.

Check that Sound Source rolloff distance (Media tab) is correct; set back to default, if you changed it (5m and 30 respectively for min and max).

I Hear No In-world Sounds Apart From Streaming Music and Voice

Go to PreferencesSound & Media -> Sounds and check that you have the Sounds and UI sliders up high enough and that there is no mute symbol (red no entry sign) on the speaker icon next to those.

Audio "Skipping"

Go to the top menu bar→ Advanced → Use Plugin Read Thread, and disable it, if it is enabled - or vice versa. (If you cannot see Advanced on the top menu, press Ctrl-Alt-D.)

If that doesn't help, first ensure that you have your bandwidth set correctly. Also, test the audio stream in your regular media player, and/or try a different audio stream in-world.

Audio "Fading"

If the music volume fades as you cam around or edit objects, check the sound equalization settings in your operating system. For example, this may be caused by “Loudness equalization” being enabled in your speaker properties on Windows 7. (Refer to http://jira.phoenixviewer.com/browse/FIRE-19885.)

Windows 10

Refer to this page for all Win10 issues.

Mac

Please ensure that you have the most recent version of Flash for Safari installed. You can get this via the normal update process, or from Adobe.

For streaming music on OS X 10.9 Mavericks, please refer to this page.

For users on Sierra, there are reports of media features (such as MOAP, TVs, web search, and web profiles) working more slowly. Ref. BUG-40552.

Linux

Both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Firestorm for Linux require 32-bit libraries to function. See this page for a link to your Linux flavor to verify you have all the needed audio-related packages installed and to troubleshoot stream issues.

Avatar Complexity Settings

“Jellydolls” are a new anti-lag feature created by Linden Labs. You can use this feature to reduce your lag and to protect yourself against graphics-crashing devices worn by others.

For general information about Avatar Complexity (“jellydolls”), please see:

  • Torley Linden's short video tutorial:

This will give you a good overview of how jellydolls work and how they can help you. Don't try to find the settings the way Torley describes, since those are the official SL viewer settings! See the rest of this page for the Firestorm settings.

Please note: the official Second Life pages (above) describe how to find the settings in the official SL viewer. See the descriptions below for how to find them in Firestorm.

How to Adjust Who You See as Jellydolls

Avatar complexity slider

  • This determines which avatars will appear as jellydolls to you, based on their complexity.
  • Go to Preferences → Graphics → General → Maximum Complexity.
  • Note: Lowering this slider will decrease your lag and turn more avatars into jellydolls; raising the slider may lag you but more avatars will be fully visible.
  • Note: Moving this slider all the way to the right is not advised, as this sets this setting to “No Limit” — which means that no avatars will render as jellydolls to you, but you will be subject to lag and worn graphics crashers.

To turn specific avatars into jellydolls, or render them fully

  • Right click on the avatar's name tag and choose from the menu:
    • Render Normally – avatar will be affected by your complexity slider (above)
    • Do Not Render – avatar will be a jellydoll for you
    • Render Fully – avatar will be rendered fully even if over your complexity slider setting
  • In the pie menu, these options are under More → More → Render.

To review avatars for whom you changed render settings

Go to the top menu bar and select Avatar Render Settings. Here you can change how avatars render for you. Refer to this page for details.

How to Adjust What Complexity Information You See on Screen

Show/hide avatar complexity information in name tags

  • Go to Preferences → General and set “Show Avatar Complexity,” “Only if too complex,” and “Show own complexity” as you wish.

Show/hide warning about your avatar being too complex for others to see you

  • This appears in the top right of your screen.
  • Go to Preferences → Notifications → Alerts, and move “Warn me if my avatar complexity may be too high” to the “Always show” box or to the “Never show” box, as you prefer.

Show/hide the display of your complexity changes

  • This appears in the top right of your screen when you change clothes/accessories.
  • Go to Advanced menu → Show Debug Settings → ShowMyComplexityChanges, and set that to zero to hide it, or a larger value to show it. Please make a note of this debug in case you need to activate it again.

Additional complexity info in hover text

  • This shows complexity plus rank and area in hover text over avatars.
  • Go to Avatar menu → Avatar Health → Show Avatar Complexity Information
  • Note: The height of this hovertext cannot be adjusted.

To see your own avatar complexity at any time

Go to Avatar → Appearance and look at the bottom right of the window.

How to find out the rendering weight of a specific item

Two methods:

  • Wear the item and then remove it, noting the change to your avatar complexity in the upper right of the viewer.
  • Wear the item. Edit it → in the Build floater, click “more info” → and see the number listed for “Display.”

Default complexity settings

These are the default settings that determine the threshold at which you view avatars fully rendered or as jellydolls. They correspond with the “Quality and Speed” slider located in Preferences → Graphics → General. When the settings are left at these defaults, avatars whose complexity numbers are below these thresholds will be visible, while avatars with higher complexities will appear as jellydolls to you.

  • Low: 35,000
  • Low-Mid: 100,000
  • Mid: 200,000
  • Mid-High: 250,000
  • High: 300,000
  • High-Ultra: 350,000
  • Ultra: 350,000

Searching the Menus

It is possible to search the menus for specific words or phrases, by typing into the search bar at the top. For example, typing in the word upload will result in matches on up to four top menu items: Avatar, Build, Advanced and Develop. In short, using search will filter out what is shown in the top menu bar, removing all items except those that contain what you searched for.

Matched items are highlighed in color (you can change the highlight color in Preferences → Colors -> Miscellaneous→ Preferences Search Highlight Color).

To clear the search, and have the Preferences window revert to its normal state, just click the 'x' at the far right end of the search field.

Menu search is enabled (or disabled) in Preferences -> Advanced→ Show Menu Search.

Graphics Presets

: When hovering your mouse over this symbol, it will open the Graphics Presets window. Please note that this symbol will only show if you have created a graphic preset in PreferencesGraphics -> General.

Windows 10 Issues

Massive FPS Drop after Viewer Window Loses Focus

This issue is the result of recent updates of Win10, specifically KB3176938, KB3189866, KB3193494 and KB3194496.

Many users have reported that updating their graphics drivers has fixed the problem:

Should you not be able to upgrade the driver, read on.

  • To uninstall these Windows updates, go to Programs & features > view updates > click and uninstall. Please be advised that uninstalling any update marked as a security update is done at your own risk.
  • To keep windows from downloading the update again download this tool and run it to “hide” the update: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930?utm_source=twitter#bookmark-1607.
  • Note: “Hiding” one update will not prevent other, later updates. The FPS problem may return as other updates are installed and until Microsoft fixes this issue.

Please refer to this LL JIRA and this FS JIRA page for details and other suggestions.

Voice Is Distorted

If you suddenly sound like a man (and you aren't), or your friend suddenly sounds like a demon (and isn't), or you are hearing other forms of distorted voice, try this:

  1. Right click the Speakers icon on your system tray and select Recording Devices.
  2. Right click the Microphone and select Properties.
  3. Switch to the Advanced tab.
  4. Under Default Format drop down menu, select: 2 channel, 16 bit, 44100 Hz (CD quality).
  5. Untick “Enable Audio Enhancements”
  6. Press OK and OK.
  7. Relog if needed.

Sounds Don't Play

If you suddenly find that sounds do not play, things like button sounds or in-world object sounds, the possible cause is your default output format. Try this:

  1. Right click the Speakers icon on your system tray and select Playback Devices.
  2. Right click the Speakers (or your chosen audio output) and select Properties.
  3. Switch to the Advanced tab.
  4. Under Default Format drop down menu, select: 16 bit, 44100 Hz (CD quality).
  5. Click Apply and OK.
  6. Relog if needed.

Missing Characters

If some characters now display as boxes, you will need to reinstall Windows font packs. Some of the more common font packs are Chinese, Japanese and Korean, though if you installed those and still see boxes, you will want to ask the person using those characters to tell you what language (or symbol set) they are so that you can install the appropriate font pack.

  1. Log out of Firestorm.
  2. Go to the Windows Start menu and choose Settings.
  3. In the window that opens, click in the search field at the top right and type in “language”
  4. Select Add a language from the search results.
  5. Click the + Add a language option and select the language from the list. The contents of the window scrolls left and right.
  6. Back in the Add a language section, click the newly added language and choose Options.
  7. Click the top Download button. The language will download and install, and it may take some time.
  8. Repeat this for each language pack you wish to install.
  9. Now log into Firestorm, you should see the missing characters correctly rendered.

Error 0xc000007b

Error 0xc000007b when launching 64 bit Firestorm:

Try following these steps to get the Firestorm installer to reinstall the Visual C++ redistributables that come packaged with it:

  1. First make sure you have the Firestorm installer handy in a place where you can easily access it when you get to the step where it's needed below. (You can download it from here, or from here if you need an older version than the current release.)
  2. Go to the Windows Start Menu and choose Settings.
  3. In the window that opens, click on “System Display, notifications, apps, power.”
  4. In the next window go down to “Apps & features.”
  5. Scroll down to the entry for “Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 x86 Redistributable.” Click on it and choose “Uninstall” (the list won't necessarily update to show that it is uninstalled, but it is).
  6. Click on “Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 x64 Redistributable” and once again choose “Uninstall.”
  7. Close that window.
  8. Re-run the Firstorm installer. The installer window will now say “Modify Setup” (since FS is already installed) and will give you 3 options: “Repair”, “Uninstall” and “Close.” Click on “Repair.” Firestorm will reinstall the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributables that it ships with.
  9. Restart your computer. You should be able to launch Firestorm without getting the error message now.

Graphics Issues After Win10 Update

If you start experiencing graphics issues after a Win10 update, such as driver crashes, or simply very poor performance, the first thing to try is a full computer reboot.

If that doesn't help, reinstall your graphics card driver from the card maker's website, not from Windows. That is, from nVidia, AMD, or Intel.

If you have Intel HD graphics, refer to this page.

Camera Spinning or Mouse Wandering in Mouselook

The most common cause for this is a non-default DPI value, or screen scaling. Refer to this page for tips on setting DPI/scaling to default.

Unable to install current version of Quicktime

Some Windows 10 users have experienced difficulty installing current versions of Apple's Quicktime software on their systems. Version 7.7.6 of Quicktime has been confirmed to install correctly on Windows 10 systems. You can download version 7.7.6 from the link below:

Quicktime 7.7.6 (link will take you to the 7.7.6 download page on Apple's website)

Text and User Interface Too Small

First try increasing Preferences → User Interface → 2D Overlay → UI Scaling. Another possibility is Preferencess → User Interface → Font → Font size adjustment.

Failed to Decode Login Credentials

Some Windows 10 updates change the machine ID used to create login credentials, resulting in Firestorm reporting “Failed to Decode Login Credentials”. The best way to deal with this is to wipe the stored credentials file, as explained here. Naturally, you will then have to retype the user name and password for all your accounts, when first logging in after deleting the credentials file.

How to Replace Your Firestorm.exe in Windows 10

If you have certain Intel HD graphics, and have upgraded your PC to Windows 10, your graphics card will not be fully supported by Intel. If you have this issue, you will be unable to log in. You will get the following error dialog box:

Firestorm is unable to run because your video card drivers did not install properly or are out of date, or are for unsupported hardware. Please make sure you have the latest video card drivers, and even if you do have the latest, try reinstalling them. If you continue to receive this message, contact the Second Life Support Portal

This is not a function of the viewer, but instead is a function of the drivers provided by Intel for your computer. However we have developed a workaround that should help most users with this issue continue to have the ability to use the Firestorm viewer.

Note: This fix is only available for 32 bit versions of Firestorm. Even if you have a 64 bit version of Windows 10, and usually use the 64 bit version of Firestorm, you will need to use the 32 bit for 4.7.9 (4.7.7 and 4.7.5) as we do not have a fix that will work with the 64bit version

Important: Do NOT run in Compatibility mode.
Do NOT uninstall Firestom; you will be replacing one or more files, not the enitre install.

  1. Verify that your graphics card is one of the affected versions. You can find a table of affected versions here: Graphics Drivers Supported Operating Systems but most frequently we have seen Intel HD 2000 and Intel HD 3000. You should be able to verify your graphics in the system info of your computer.
  2. Below, select the zip file that is correct for your download, either the 32 bit Havok version or the 32 bit OpenSim version, download it to your computer. You will need to unzip the file and save it on your computer in a location you will remember.
  3. On your computer, open File Explorer. (If it isn't on your taskbar you may need to use the search to find it). When you open it, select the View tab at the top of the page and check the box on the right had side that says File Name Extensions.
  4. In File Explorer, navigate to This PC then Local Disk (C:) (or the location you normally download Firestorm if it differs) and then navigate to Program Files (x86). Open Program Files (x86), locate the Firestorm folder, and open it. In the Firestorm folder, locate the Firestorm-Release.exe file and delete it.
  5. Replace it with the Firestorm.exe file that was in the zipped folder you downloaded from the website.

You should now be able to run Firestorm on your PC.

Firestorm 4.4.2 (34167) - Mac OSX Only

NOTE: This version of Firestorm is only being offered for MacOS. It should only be used in cases where more recent versions don't work well for you. But please note that, given the many changes in SL since 4.4.2 was released, 4.4.2 will be badly broken for you anyway.
Also, Mac OSX 10.5 is not compatible with Firestorm 4.4.2.

Firestorm Viewer Modes

At the Firestorm log in screen, next to the log In button, is a drop down menu, which allows you to select the default viewer mode. These can be one of:

  • Phoenix
  • Firestorm
  • Hybrid
  • V5
  • Latency
  • Text

Firestorm Gateway Roleplay

Help Wanted (RP)

One of the goals of the Firestorm Gateway is to introduce New-To-SL Residents to the various things that they can do in SL, in hopes that they will find something they enjoy doing. The expectation is that they will be more inclined to keep using SL when they discover something they truly enjoy.

RolePlay is very popular in Second Life, so the Firestorm Gateway has dedicated a large space for SciFi Roleplay. The RolePlay space gives a new user the opportunity to visit RolePlay sets, and to observe and/or participate in Roleplay. This lets them figure out if RolePlay is something they might enjoy doing.

It is also a place where existing RolePlayers who don't have a RolePlay home can come and enjoy themselves. It is also a place where Existing RolePlay groups can come to demonstrate what their group is about and to recruit new members for their group.

The “magic” of the Firestorm Gateway RolePlay area is that it brings experienced RolePlayers and new-to-Roleplay users together in a fun/safe environment. It is a win-win situation. Existing RolePlay groups benefit, because they can meet new-to-Roleplay individuals and tell them about their groups. New-To-SL Residents win because they get to see/experience high quality RolePlay and decide if it is something they might enjoy doing. Individual RolePlayers win because they have a safe and drama-free place where they can come to RolePlay.

RolePlay Opportunities on Firestorm Gateway

  • Drop-In Roleplay - 24×7 Drop-In Generic Sci-Fi Rolepay. This takes place at Callahan's Spiral Galaxy on the top deck of the Tempus Space Station.
  • Star Trek Roleplay - This takes place on the USS Gateway (a Sovereign Class Starship) at scheduled RolePlay times.
  • Free-Form Roleplay - Individuals and Groups are permitted to user our RP facilities when they are not in use by scheduled RolePlay events. We have a generic SciFi Spaceship, the A.F.S.S Epsilon. We have a large space station where all decks except for the Upper Deck are available for space station RolePlay. We have a large Sovereign-Class StarTrek Starship called the USS Gateway.

(Please click the link for more information on each RolePlay Opportunity.)

Firestorm's 24x7 DropIn SciFi RolePlay

**Come RolePlay With Us**

Where: Callahan's Spiral Galaxy, http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Firestorm%20Aerodrome/191/190/3587

What: SciFi RolePlay. Drop in, find someone else here and roleplay with them. Note: this is text RP in local chat. (If you prefer, you can just come take a look at the station and explore.)

Dress Code: This is generic SciFi roleplay, so feel free to wear any sort of G-rated science fiction avatar/costume from any scifi gendre. (If you don't have a scifi costume/avatar and would like one, there are some free ones on the lower level of Callahan's in room A01.) Feel free to drop and select a free scifi avatar.

Note -Costumes are optional, not required, so please feel free to come even if you don't have a scifi costume.

Other Info: We have lots of stuff here for RP and/or exploration. There is a bar, a smoking/gambling room (complete with Greedy and Poker tables), the station's visitor information center, a gym (you need to work out to keep your muscle tone in space), a communications center, the Galaxy Dance Club and a few indoor garden areas. Feel free to Roleplay in any of these areas.

-> Now Hiring <-

Callahan's is looking for some “staff,” such as bar tenders, waitresses, the janitor, regular bar customers etc – these are RP positions and filling one will not automatically put you on the Firestorm Team. You will develop a character and come somewhat regularly as that character with the goal of helping to foster the RP. These roleplay “staff” positons are for people who are making a commitment to frequent and hang out at the bar and engage those who drop by in RP. You can also use the Firestorm Gateway Roleplay Group chat to invite folks to join you for RP.

If you are interested, please contact Teresa Firelight or Star Wolff (StarWolff2000)

**Introducing Callahan's Spiral Galaxy**

The Firestorm Gateway has an area dedicated to 24×7 drop-in SciFi RolePlay. It is loosely patterned after the Cantina from Star Wars Episode IV, where folks of all species/backgrounds come together to conduct their business (much of which is less than legal). It is set on the top deck of space station Tempus. This is the only space station in this sector, so it tends to be busy. The station and bar have a backstory, and are a perfect setting for many different types of SciFi RolePlay.

Callahan's Backstory:

A group of misfits, having escaped from a prison planet, found the abandoned station on their voyage across the stars. The station, SS Tempus, had been stripped of some of it's key components, but other than that, it was in relatively good condition.

Together they established it as their own, taking a vow of secrecy to protect themselves from arrest. Their past transgressions are not known: some may have been killers, some just rebels or some may have been petty thieves. Others may have been falsely accused “innocents.”

The group of travelers appears to get along, but beneath the surface there are distinct factions. They took over the station and decided to act like they are supposed to be there, establishing a way station for galaxy travelers to rest and relax in their journey. Trading became a byproduct of the endeavor as they made friends with both legit cargo ship captains and black market cartels.

From time to time the station comes under attack from forces not known …. possibly bounty hunters or intergalactic police agents looking for those who committed crimes, possibly a victim of fowl play coming back for “revenge,” possibly pirates out for a quick profit…

**Why Is Firestorm Offering 24x7 DropIn RolePlay?**

Firestorm Gateway's goal is to introduce new-to-SL residents to RolePlay with seasoned RolePlayers. We want them to experience SciFi RolePlay and see if it is something they are interested in. Firestorm Gateway's motivation is to help these new residents find something that they love, that will make them want to keep coming back to SL. To that end, Callahan's RolePlay area is different than almost any other in SL.

We actually encourage existing SciFi RolePlay groups to befriend and recruit the new residents. There is one Caveat to this: experienced RPers need to somewhat regularly RP here and must form some type of relationship with new-to-SL residents before inviting them to their groups. In other words, experienced RolePlayers can form friendships with new-to-SL folks, then invite interested parties to visit their RolePlay area, join their RolePlay group, etc. This accomplishes two things for us… 1) it connects new residents into communities so they will want to keep coming back to SL, and 2) it helps existing RolePlay groups to grow and prosper. (Of course, we expect everyone to be new-resident friendly, e.g., tolerant of new-resident mistakes and lack of SL expertise.)

Callahan's is also intended to be a RolePlay home for existing RolePlayers who dont have a RolePlay home and would like a nice place to drop-in and RolePlay. We are also looking for “regulars” who can help us establish Callahan's.

Firestorm's Star Trek RolePlay

**Come RolePlay With Us**

Where: USS Gateway Bridge, http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Firestorm%20Aerodrome/173/176/3684

What: Star Trek RolePlay. Experience what it is like to be crew on a Starfleet Starship. We have multiple missions each week. If you come when no organized RP is going on, feel free to do an impromptu RolePlay with one of your friends or with another crew member. Note: this is text RP in local chat. (If you prefer, you can just come take a look at the ship and explore.)

Dress Code: This is Star Trek RolePlay. Starfleet Uniforms are encouraged but not required. If you would like a free uniform, we have some nice ones on the Supply Deck (you can take the ship's turbolift to the supply deck).

Note -Uniforms are optional, not required, so please feel free to come even if you don't have a Star Trek Uniform.

Other Info: The ship is huge, having several decks. You can use the Turoblift to move around the ship. There is a holodeck with multiple holodeck programs you can rez. Also the Shuttlebay has a shuttle rezzer, where you can rez a shuttle and then fly around the exterior of the starship.

-> Now Hiring <-

The USS Gateway is looking for regular crew, with openings in the following departments: Engineering, Medical, Operations, Science, Security/Tactical. These are RP positions and filling one will not automatically put you on the Firestorm Team. You will develop a character and come faithfully to one (or more) of the weekly mission times.

If you are interested, please contact Teresa Firelight or StarWolff (StarWolff2000)

**Introducing the USS Gateway**

The Firestorm Gateway has an area dedicated to Star Trek RolePlay. It is a Sovereign Class Starship, coming from the era The Next Generation (TNG) and/or Voyager. This is a complete ship, with a full hull and a shuttlebay that opens to space. Physically it is positioned a little above the Space Station Tempus.

How The Turbolift Works:

We use a turbolift to move around the ship. It is a Trek Version of an elevator. It is actually pretty easy to use:

  • touch the door to open them
  • walk inside and find the “Turbolift – Select Destination” Sign
  • select your desired destination and left click it. You will be instantly transported to your destination
  • exit turbolift
Features and Points of Interest
  • Bridge
    • Viewscreen - touch the viewscreen on the bridge, and it will give you a menu with many possible scenes, including a moving warp display.
    • Alert System - touch the circular ring just below the dome, and it will give you an alert menu. If you come on the bridge and all craziness is breaking loose with alert system, touch the ring under the dome and select “All Clear”
  • Holodeck - touch the “Holodeck Programming” screen just outside the holodeck door, and you will get a menu with 14 sceens to choose from. Some of them have interactive features.
  • Shuttlebay – Rez a shuttle and fly it outside the ship
    • Touch the 01 or the 02 pad on the floor for menu
    • Select shuttle type from list (recommend Type 6 Shuttle)
    • A shuttle will rez
    • Right Click shuttle and select “sit here”
    • Say “start” in local chat to start engines
    • use the direction arrows and Page Up/Page Down to fly shuttle
    • when done flying it, simply “stand” (Shuttle will disappear in 3 minutes)
  • Sickbay – Once you lay on a sickbay bed, touch it again for a menu to change position (Anims) or to take medical scans.
  • Supply deck – has free uniforms and other supplies.

How to File a JIRA

There are several reasons why you would want to file a JIRA:

  • To request a new feature
  • To request an improvement
  • To report a bug
  • To request support

Creating an account

In order to do anything except view Firestorm issues, you will need an account on JIRA. Creating an account is very easy. Start by going to the Sign Up page and enter the following information:

  • Username - This can be anything, but we prefer that it be your SL username. Don't use spaces, but you can use a period to separate words, such as beta.tester. This is what you will use to log into JIRA.
  • Password - This needs to be at least 8 characters in length, and shouldn't be the same as any other password you use.
  • Confirm Password - Type in your password again
  • Full Name - This should be your full SL name. If your username was beta.tester, your full name would be Beta Tester. This is what everyone will see when you create a JIRA or comment on one, so do not use your real name.
  • Email - Enter a valid email address. JIRA can send you emails when someone comments on your JIRA or on issues you've “watched”.

Click Sign up and you're all set. If JIRA complains, fix the entries it complains about and then click Sign up again.

Click here for the JIRA Sign-up page.

Creating an Issue

No matter what kind of issue you want to create, the process is nearly identical and starts with going to the JIRA Dashboard and clicking the Create Issue link near the top of the page (every page), on the right side of the red menu line. If you don't see that there, you need to log in - click Log In at the top right, enter your username and password and then click Log In.

Clicking Create Issue opens a small box with Project and Issue Type selections. There are a lot of choices, here's a list of the most common:

  • Requesting a new feature
    • Set the Project to Firestorm 1) and the Issue Type to New Feature.
  • Requesting an improvement to existing code
    • Set the Project to Firestorm 2) and the Issue Type to Improvement.
  • Reporting a bug
    • Set the Project to Firestorm and the Issue Type to Bug.
  • Requesting Support
    • Set the Project to Support and the Issue Type to Support Request.

Then click Create. This will bring up the Create Issue page. From here the fields and the information that goes in them are the same regardless of what type of issue you want to create.

  • Summary - Enter a brief overview of the problem. You don't have to put everything here, just a few words to summarize the issue.
  • Priority - By default this is set to Major, and it can remain that way. If you are reporting an issue that is preventing you from logging on at all with any of our viewers, you can choose Blocker. But if you spotted a typographical error, that's probably something minor or even trivial. If you put in the wrong priority, don't worry, we'll work with you as needed to set it correctly.
  • SL Avatar Name - Set this to the name of the avatar that is affected.
  • Patch Attached - If you're submitting a patch that would add a new feature, improve on an existing one or correct a bug of some kind, check this box. Otherwise, leave it unchecked.
  • Reported In - Select the viewer that you're using. This can either be the one with the problem or some other version.
  • Affects Versions - Here you would want to identify all the versions that you know are affected. For example, if you have a problem that shows up in every one of our Release versions of Firestorm, you would want to list them all. If you don't know, then list only the version you're using.
  • Environment - This is very important for Support requests and bug reports. We need to know what your system looks like to the viewer. To get this information, open the viewer, click on the Help menu and select About, and then click Copy to Clipboard. Then click into the Environment field in the JIRA page, right-click and choose Paste (or press Ctrl-V).
Note here that if you're creating anything other than a Support request, this information is visible to everyone. You can delete your location details if you wish.
  • Description - Here is where you want to put as many details as you can about the issue. If you're reporting a bug, or if you have a problem that you can reproduce consistently, you want to include the steps you take to reproduce that. Also include details such as whether this affects only one avatar, whether it happens on more than one computer (we'd like system information for each computer in that case) and so on. If you get error messages, be sure to write the exact message (as closely as possible).
  • Attachment - Add files that you have that can help further explain the issue, such as images or videos, use the Browse button to add them. Remember that the maximum file size is 10MB, and images must be either JPG or PNG.

How To Give Us Your Logs

Another very useful bit of information is your viewer logs. These can sometimes be very helpful in finding the root cause of a problem and crafting a solution. Logs should be collected after having logged out - or after a crash if that is your issue - and before restarting the viewer. If you log in again then the logs won't have any of the clues needed.

NOTE: Please do this, even if you have crash logging enabled. It saves an enormous amount of time.

In its default location, the logs folder is hidden on most systems. To find it, you will need to show hidden folders. The logs folder is in:

Firestorm 32-bit
Windows Vista, 7, 8.1 and 10 C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\Firestorm
(or use the environment variable %APPDATA%)
Mac /Users/[YOUR USERNAME]/Library/Application Support/Firestorm/
linux ~/.firestorm/
Firestorm 64-bit
Windows Vista, 7, 8.1 and 10 C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\Firestorm_x64
(or use the environment variable %APPDATA%)
Mac /Users/[YOUR USERNAME]/Library/Application Support/Firestorm/
linux ~/.firestorm_x64/

Compress all the files in the folder named “logs”:

  • Windows: Right-click on the folder and choose Send To > Compressed zip file
  • Linux Gnome: Right-click on the folder and choose Compress
  • Linux shell: tar -cjvf “Viewer_logs.tar.bz2” ./logs/
  • Mac: Hold Shift while highlighting the contents of the folder and then Ctrl-click and choose Compress Items

You may want to move this compressed file to your Desktop.

To attach logs to an issue filed earlier, go to More Actions → Attach Files. Then click Select Files button, locate your compressed file (on your Desktop if you moved it there) and then click Open or OK. You may optionally add a comment at the same time. Finally, click Attach

Now that you have all fields filled, out go back and check to make sure you haven't left anything out and made all the selections needed. Once you are done checking it over click the Create button. If after double checking your ticket you decide not to file the ticket just click the Cancel button.

Working in your Issue

Once the JIRA has been created you'll be shown the issue number. It will be in the form of the project abbreviation, like SUP or FIRE, and a number (example: FIRE-1234). Only you and team members can view your own SUP issues.

You'll also get an email when someone comments, when something is attached or when some other action takes place. Click the link in the email, it looks just like the issue number you got initially, and comment in the issue itself. Do not reply to the email, it will not work.

If you don't get any emails, they could be filtered as spam or the email address you supplied is incorrect. You can confirm your email by going to your profile and then clicking the little edit pencil along the Details line.

In addition, we strongly prefer that you have an existing small base of crew committed to attending your missions, so you can RP even if no new residents show up at the beginning of the RP. You must have good people skills and be newcomer-friendly. And, of course, you must have a fairly extensive familiarity and/or knowledge of Trek.

LEADERSHIP POSITIONS

SS Tempus Station Manager

This person is responsible for helping establish 24×7 RP on the Firestorm Gateway. Their Primary focus will be on Callahan's, but they can also work to establish 24×7 drop-in RP on SS Tempus and USS Gateway. This will include overseeing 24×7 RP activity and establishing some regularly scheduled events to draw people to the RP area.

Qualifications: This person must have solid experience in a 24×7 RP environment with some leadership experience in it. They must have good people skills, be newcomer friendly (e.g, welcoming/helpful towards new-to-SL and new-to-RP individuals), be very dependable, and be willing to have a near-daily presence at the RP area.

Firestorm Gateway RolePlay Publicist

This person is responsible for getting the word out as widely as possible about the Firestorm Gateway RolePlay – including the general RP, any activities, special events, etc. Firestorm has a large group for new-to-SL residents, where they can send notices. There are some SciFi Groups that permit this type of announcement as well. Plus they should set up and maintain a standard Internet presence for the Firestorm Gateway's RolePlay (Blog, Facebook, twitter, etc).

Qualifications: A solid knowledge of standard Internet publicity mechanisms, an enthusiasm for promoting Firestorm Gateway's RP, good writing skills, and some experience in internet publicity.

Editing Outfits in Firestorm

Icon to Open Appearance Panel

You an access the outfit window by going to the Avatar menu and clicking on Appearance, or by clicking the icon in the bottom button bar. This opens the appearance window, which allows you to view and edit outfits. Another way of accessing this window is to right click yourself and select Edit Outfit from the menu.

NOTE: A large number of saved outfits (say, 200 or more) can cause problems for some, resulting in freezes or crashes due to running out of memory. This applies in particular to adding more items to existing outfits, via Add More.

Appearance Window - Display View

View of All Outfits

  • Outfit name: At the top of the window is the name of the currently worn outfit - if any; otherwise “No Outfit” appears here. Note that No Outfit doesn't mean that nothing is worn - rather it can simply mean that you wore items manually for different folders, or by some means other than this window.
  • Screwdriver-Wrench Icon: This allows the currently worn outfit to be edited. This is described below.

My Outfits Tab

This view displays your outfits, the ones located in your inventory, in the folder called Outfits. Outfit folders are listed alphabetically, and do not show “nesting” (ie, if you have folders within folders, that structure is not shown in this view.) Several things can be done in this view:

  • Small Arrow: clicking this will open the outfit to show all items in it. Clicking it again will close the outfit folder again.
  • Right Click - Folder: Right clicking an outfit name displays a small menu. With this, you may wear the outfit, replacing the one worn, wear it but adding to whatever you have worn, take it off (if it is currently worn); you can also rename or delete it.
  • Right Click - Item: If you right click on an item in an outfit folder, you can wear or detach it, get information about it (item profile), and so on.

Wearing Tab

Clicking on this tab gives a list of all currently worn items: clothing and attachments (including HUDs). Right clicking any one allows you to detach that item, or edit it (which opens an edit window), or to edit the entire outfit; this last is covered below.

  • Gear Icon: Below the outfit list view is a gear icon. This behaves differently, depending on whether you are in My Outfits view or Wearing view:
    • In My Outfits View: Many of the options are also available when right clicking folders or single items. But in addition, it is also possible to create new clothes or new body parts.
    • In Wearing View: Allows you to edit the outfit, or remove a worn item.
  • Send to clipboard: This button will copy the list of worn items to your clipboard; from there, it may be pasted into a notecard, or a text editor or blog post, with Ctrl-V (Cmd-V on a Mac).

Appearance Window - Edit Outfit View

If you click the screwdriver-wrench at the top of the window, you are taken to the Edit Outfit window. Here, you may add or remove items from the currently worn outfit.

The outfit window is organized into three tabs: Clothing, Attachments and Body Parts. If you mouse over a worn item, you will see two icons appear, on either side of the item:

  • X on the left: clicking that will remove the item from the outfit.
  • Screwdriver-Wrench on the right: if you click this, you will be able to edit the item directly - except for attachments.

On the clothing tab, below the list of worn clothing items, are types of items not currently worn. For example, if you are wearing a shirt shirt, then Shirt will not appear here; if instead you are not wearing a jacket layer, then it will be listed - and to the right, a Plus sign, which allows you to add a new clothing item of that specific type, from your inventory.

Beneath the list, is an Add More button. Clicking this splits the view in half, horizontally, as shown here. In this lower window, you can scroll to select items to add to the outfit. To the right of the (now pressed) Add More button is a drop down which you may use to filter the list below. Once you have found the desired item, click the Wear Item button below the window.

Below this button are two buttons that allow you to view the list in an inventory tree, or as a flat list.

When done, click the Add More button again.

At the bottom left is a gear icon; click this to create a new type of item (body part, clothing, physics, etc).

On the bottom left is a shopping cart icon; clicking this opens the SL marketplace in your web browser.

To save your modified outfit, click the Save button at the bottom of the window. Or, if you wish to save this with a new name, click the up arrow to the right and select Save As.

NOTE: Editing body parts is covered on a separate page.

Alternate Method

This isn't the only way to work with outfits in Firestorm. If you prefer, you can work with your inventory directly, by creating folders yourself in some other folder, and moving or copying items into it. You may also copy an item and then Paste Link, which is very useful if items are no copy.

If you do use this method, do not use the Outfits folder, as this should be managed only by the method described above, not manually. Use Clothing, or create a folder of your own.

One advantage of using this method is that you may structure your outfits by category. For example, you can create folders such as:

  • Casual
  • Formal
  • Fantasy

… and so on. And in each of those, create folders for single outfits. This method may be more tedious but it does give greater flexibility.

NOTE: Using this method breaks the built-in outfit system accessed via the Appearance window. So use one or the other, not both.
