Login Failure

This section covers problems that happen after entering your login information and pressing “Log In.”

It explains some of the more common reasons for login failure, and what you can do about it. For information on other kinds of login problems, refer to SL's Login Failure page and SL's Error Messages page.

NOTE: Before doing anything else, check the Second Life Grid Status page to see if there are any known issues reported. If so, that might explain the issues you are having.

Firestorm 6.3.9 Only - Viewer Crashes Right After Loading

Firestorm 6.3.9 Only: There is a bug in the Firestorm 6.3.9 AO that will cause you to crash in certain situations. Please see AO Crash on 6.3.9 for more information and instructions on how to fix it.

If you have Intel Graphics, please refer here.

'Unable to Connect to Simulator' or 'Despite Our Best Attempts...' or other connection messages

At times, when attempting to log in, you will get a message like “Unable to connect to simulator”. Unfortunately, this message can be the result of several different things. This page covers some of the more common - and more rare - cases when this might occur.

  • Your Internet Connection Is Down: Check whether you are able to connect to the 'net using a web browser; try to use it to visit a known website. If that fails, then the first thing to try is to unplug your modem/router for at least a full minute, then once plugged back in, allow then to go through startup, after which reboot your computer. If after this you are still unable to connect to the Internet with a web browser, you will probably need to contact your ISP to have your connection checked.
  • Your Router and/or Modem Has Problems: Repeat the same things as above.
  • Your Firewall Is Preventing the Connection: Try disabling your firewall software completely and then try to log in again. If you are successful, then you need to allow the viewer access through the firewall. Some tips on how to do that are here: Second Life wiki: Configuring Your Firewall.
  • Domain Name Server (DNS) Issues: Users of Firestorm may get “Unable to connect to simulator”, or a message specifically saying that there are issues with the DNS. In that case refer to the DNS Failure page for how to proceed.
  • Region Is Down: It is possible that the region you are trying to log into is down. So try again but select a different region name at the log in screen. Some regions you can try: Hippo Hollow, Aich, Hatton, Pooley.
  • Group Tag Preventing Login: There are cases when your active group tag will prevent log in - most usually when the tag contains unicode characters (though there have been isolated cases where even standard Latin characters have prevented log in as well). If this happens, you can attempt to log in using a text based viewer such as Radegast or MetaBolt, and change your active group in that viewer (preferably to None), log out and then log in with your usual viewer.
Should that not be an option, you will need to find a way to get word in-world, to the group owner, and have them either edit the group title tag or, should that not be an option, eject you from the group.
If that too is not a viable option, then the only other recourse is to file a support ticket with LL and have them change your active group.
This is a server issue, and is reported in this LL JIRA.

Viewer 'Not Responding' Error

Waiting for Region Handshake

This error occurs when the viewer is not getting an acknowledgement from the server. See above for how to deal with connection issues.

Login Failed; Your Account Is Not Accessible Until (date/time)

This usually happens when you attempt to log in immediately after a crash. When you crash out of SL, the servers do not “realize” it immediately. This is part because it might simply be a case of a brief loss of connection, so SL allows for that. In fact, if anyone is near where you were at the time of a crash, they will continue to see your avatar for several minutes.

When you attempt to log back in, SL sees this, and starts to shut down the session that was running when you crashes. People will see your avatar vanish at this point.

So if you get the above message, wait for a minute, then try to log in again.

Login Fail Without Cache Clear

When things are running normally, you should never have to clear cache in order to log in. If you experience either of the following problems when logging in without clearing cache…

  • You disconnect from Second Life as soon as you log in, with the View IMs/Quit message; or
  • You are able to log in but find yourself under water (all you can see is a blue screen) at coordinates 10, 10, 10 (if you log in to an all blue screen, check your location, see if you are near the region's corner, at 10, 10, 10).

…then refer to this page. Both problems have the same root and thus the set of solutions.

'Despite our best efforts...'

If logging in fails on the first attempt only with a message like “Despite our best efforts…”, and you use Kaspersky password manager, reset your login info for Second Life in the password manager, then try again. (Information provided by Valeries Muircastle.)

I Get a Captcha Screen on the Login Page

The Firestorm login screen consists of a large upper display of information from the Firestorm web site, in addition to the smaller login panel at the bottom of the screen.

If your IP address range has a poor reputation (listed as having recently been involved in shady activities such as being part of a DDOS or a known IP that is malware infected), you will get a captcha form to complete before you can view the Firestorm web site. Captcha image

To view the upper part of the login screen normally, simply fill in the Captcha.

NOTE: You can log in to SL without doing the Captcha.

Outdated Driver Error

If you are on Windows 10, and get an error such as this:

Firestorm is unable to run because your video card drivers did not install properly or are out of date, or are for unsupported hardware. Please make sure you have the latest video card drivers, and even if you do have the latest, try reinstalling them. If you continue to receive this message, contact the Second Life Support Portal

First, make sure your drivers are fully updated

  • Visit Intel and try to update your drivers there.

Next, verify that your graphics card is one of the affected versions. You can find a table of affected versions here: Graphics Drivers Supported Operating Systems, but most frequently we have seen Intel HD 2000 and Intel HD 3000. You should be able to verify your graphics in the system info of your computer.

If this does not help, then download and install and 32bit version of the viewer. Firestorm Viewer Downloads

Graphics Issues After Win10 Update

If you start experiencing graphics issues after a Win10 update, such as driver crashes, or simply very poor performance, the first thing to try is a full computer reboot.

If that doesn't help, reinstall your graphics card driver from the card maker's website, not from Windows. That is, from nVidia, AMD, or Intel.

If you have Intel HD 2000 or 3000 graphics, refer to this page.

Laptop dual graphics issues

If your laptop has an Intel CPU and also has either an AMD or Nvidia graphics system, it may have the ability to switch between the Integrated Intel graphics (for power savings) and the AMD/Nvidia (for performance). But sometimes Firestorm isn't automatically configured to use the high-performance graphics.

You can confirm this issue by looking at Help → About Firestorm and checking the name of the graphics card listed. If it says Intel, please follow the steps on this page.

Dialogs

Many of the dialogs, warnings and confirmations that the viewer generates can be suppressed so you don't see them again.

Any viewer-generated dialog that can be suppressed is listed in PreferencesNotifications → Alerts, in the upper “Always Show” field.

Dialogs that have been suppressed are listed in the lower “Never Show” field.

System-generated dialogs, meaning generated by SL itself, cannot be suppressed.

Suppress a Dialog

Most of those dialogs would show an option in them saying “Do not show me this again”, or something very similar. Clicking that will suppress that dialog.

If you don't see the option, go to PreferencesNotifications → Alerts, look in the upper “Always Show” field, click on the dialog you want to suppress, then click the button to move it to the lower “Never Show” field.

If the dialog you want to suppress is not listed, it cannot be suppressed.

Restore a Dialog

To start seeing a dialog once more go to PreferencesNotifications → Alerts, look in the lower “Never Show” field, click on the dialog you want to restore, then click the button to move it to the upper “Always Show” field.

Firestorm Gateway for New Residents

The Firestorm Gateway is a Community Gateway for new residents coming into Second Life where we provide a safe and welcoming learning environment. Help is freely given for users on any viewer by our Gateway Helper volunteers.

New Helper Applicants are required to have been in Second Life for at least 1 year and go through a process that includes filling out an application (which requires some knowledge of the Gateway regions and basic knowledge of second life) and following through a series of steps and training. The final step would be an interview with the Gateway HR Manager at which time both sides would discuss and determine if being a volunteer helper is right for you. If both sides agree at this point you would become a member of the Firestorm Gateway Team.

Previous Gateway Helpers that have left the team for any reason: If you have been gone longer than 6 months or more you will need to start the process over again and reapply. If you have been gone for 3 - 6 months, you will need to contact the Gateway HR Manager about coming back. If you are accepted back this will likely include a brief interview and a retake of part of your helper training. If you have been gone under 3 months and are accepted back, you can begin as a helper again after reading through any changes that have been made in your absence.

If you are interested in applying to join as a helper, please complete the form.

Exploring Second Life

Second Life is vast in size, and rich in things to do and places to see. The map here shows the primary Linden mainland continents, just to give an idea of how really huge SL is.

You can find a small sampling of places by looking in the viewer's top menu bar, World → Destinations.

A much larger list may be found on the Second Life Destination Guide. You can also explore Inara Pay's blog. In the top menu, click on SL→ Exploring Second Life.

Another way to explore is via Flickr groups. There are a very large number of Flickr groups devoted to Second Life, on many themes. landscape group often require that each photo include the location in the description, so you an visit the place if the photo inspires you. A few such groups include:

Much of SL consists of resident-created builds and venues. Some of these last a very long time, but in general, places come and go quite quickly, for a variety of reasons. However, there are a large number of places which have been created by SL for the enjoyment of residents, and which are unlikely to vanish. Some of them date back to the early years of Second Life, and so are constructed using basic prims only, making them all the more amazing, in a way.

The team tasked with creating these places is known as the Linden Department of Public Works - or LDPW. The places are spread out all over the mainland continents, and so may be difficult to find. Most residents have probably only seen a small handful of them. The “Grid Hopping” section of this page (see tab above) lists primarily LDPW locations. The “Sight Seeing” section, instead, discusses ways in which you can explore SL yourself.

Use the tabs above to navigate the pages in this section.

Grid Hopping

The term “grid hopping” refers to teleporting from place to place using landmarks or SLURLs 1). It is the most common and certainly the fastest way to get around the grid.

This section lists Linden locations round the grid. They are sorted according to the continent they are on, or the closest one for those that are off-shore. Within each section, locations are grouped by maturity rating. Press Ctrl-P to open Preferences, look in the general tab, and ensure that your content rating is high enough to go to the location. If you are under 18, you will not be able to access locations designated Moderate or Adult. Also ensure that your attire suits the maturity rating of the location. Refer to Maturity ratings for details.

The list of locations here is by no means complete. The locations were researched from various sources, but most simply by looking on the world map and hopping round the grid. Therefore, no doubt, there are many places yet to be discovered, and some might be listed under the wrong continent. Nonetheless, for those who want to explore, to see great builds, learn about about the history and folklore of Second Life, maybe find quiet places to hang out with friends, or even have a laugh at some of the fun and quirky things around, then you'll find a starting point here. There are plenty of freebies (some obvious, some hidden), some games and quests.

Some locations are not technically LDPW, but they are public and can be explored. Also, in some cases, the location has a landing spot at some distance from the actual place; use your map marker to guide you in walking or flying to the correct spot.

Click the bars below to expand the section.

Sightseeing

There are a great many ways to explore Second Life: sharing landmarks, reading blogs, checking the SL destination guide, and so on. The “Grid Hopping” section provides quite a few locations as well.

However, it is arguably a lot more enjoyable to simply set out and see what you can find on your own, rather than simply hopping around. Taking the time to wander alone or with friends can fun fun, relaxing, and enjoyable.

There are many ways to explore, from pod tours which follow a predetermined itinerary, to getting a vehicle and just going where you like. This section explore these methods.

Click the bars below to expand the section.

Pod Tours

Pod tours were set up many years ago by SL resident Yavanna Llanfair, and they cover all the Linden continents, except Bellisseria thus far. You may see a pod by chance on roads, or you can go to any pod station and hop into one. If you don't want to wait for a pod to arrive, you can click on the pod's sign in a station to rez a temporary one, which you can ride immediately. On sitting, you will be offered a menu; this can give you a notecard with info on how to use pods, and the complete list of pod stations.

Pods will give a commentary as they travel, directing you to interesting things to see. They travel on road, on the water, and in some place, in the air. They will often change shape accordingly.

Pod stations may be found at the following locations:

Sailing

Sailing is incredibly popular in Second Life, be it for the simple pleasure of getting out on the water, or to race.

Most seas and waterways in SL are open to sailing, one of the most popular being the Blake Sea, which is also where many races are held.

Finding a Boat

Many places offer boats in a wide range of types: motor boats, sail boats, pirate ships, submarines, you name it. You could start with a free boat, to get the hang of it all before spending money:

Before buying a craft, it is strongly recommended that you try demos, to get a feel for how they handle and what functions they have. If you know anyone who sails, you can also ask for recommendations.

Where to Sail

In order to go sailing, you will first need to set your boat down somewhere on water - that is, rez out out. So the first thing to do is locate a “rez zone”. There are many of thsse, particularly in and around the Blake Sea. The list below, therefore, offers just a few, leaving you to find more as you explore.

Note that the Blake Sea connects Nautilus and northern Satori, along with several large private estates, all of which have publicly accessible waterways. From Nautilus you can sail north up to Corcisa. It is also possible to sail from Heterocera, down through Sansara, Belliseria to Jeogeot.

Flying

Flying is another popular activity in Second Life, and is supported by airports (generally privately owned but open to the public) on most continents. Flying takes a bit more skill than other types of vehicle in that you have to get used to navigating in 3D: not just on a surface, but also up/down. And landing without crashing is a challenge.

Finding an Aircraft

Many places offer aircraft in a wide range of types: small prop planes or airliners, fighter jets and biplanes, to give but a few examples. You could start with a free one, to get the hang of it all before spending money:

Where to Fly

You will need to find a place where you can rez your aircraft, and where there is room to take off and land - in other words, an airstrip or airport. Most of these are privately owned, but allowed aircraft to be rezzed for long enough to allow you to fly. Be sure to read any rules and respect them.

Only a few airports are listed here, leaving you to find more on your own. If you are new to flying, it is recommended that you start at a smaller, low traffic airport, so as not to intefere with others in case you obstruct the runway as you learn.

Driving

All continents have public roadways on which you can drive and explore, except for Gaeta I, it seems, which has no roads as such. It must be said, however, that road driving doesn't seem to be all that popular. However, racing is. There are many racetracks in SL; use search to find some.

Whitelisting the Viewer in Anti-Virus Software (plus Firewalls and Anti-Malware Software)

Introduction

Some anti-virus programs (and firewalls and anti-malware programs) will incorrectly flag a viewer - or necessary components of a viewer - as a virus or threat. They may remove the suspected part completely, rendering all or part of the viewer slow or non-functional. There is at least one anti-virus program which will scan every file placed on your computer, even if created by an authorized program. This can affect Firestorm (or any viewer) in that it will scan each and every texture placed in cache, slowing down performance of the viewer significantly, keeping objects and/or textures from rezzing, and keeping CPU usage high.

There is nothing we can do about this. However, it should be possible for you to tell your anti-virus (firewalls/anti-malware) that the viewer is safe; you will need to whitelist the viewer program as well as some components.

The following is a list of some protection software and how to whitelist. Naturally we cannot provide instructions for all existing programs, and the information here may be outdated. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that you consult the software manual for the specific program you use, for accurate and up to date information.

In the instructions below, substitute “firewall” or “anti-malware program” for “anti-virus” as needed.

Click Here if you were advised to reinstall

Reinstalling

Here are the steps to follow to reinstall and whitelist a viewer in such as way that the anti-virus program doesn't “mangle” the viewer yet again:

  1. Uninstall the viewer normally.
  2. Disable the anti-virus software completely.
  3. REBOOT your computer to make sure that the AV is not running anymore.
  4. If needed, download the viewer from here.
  5. Reinstall the viewer.
    • On Windows, make sure you do not install it back to the default folder suggested; INSTALL TO A NEW FOLDER. This step is vital.
    • On Mac, simply reinstall to your Application folder as usual.

What to Whitelist

In your anti-virus program, whitelist the following, per the instructions below (or better, consult the manual for your anti-virus software):

  • The viewer:
    • On Windows the viewer install folder is by default
      • 64-bit - C:\Program Files\Firestormx64-Release
      • 32-bit - C:\Program Files\Firestorm-Release
      • 32-bit on x64 - C:\Program Files (x86)\Firestorm-Release
Inside this, the viewer itself (firestorm.exe), slplugin.exe, slvoice.exe and dullahan_host.exe (inside llplugin folder)
    • On Mac: the Firestorm application (normally in your Applications folder)
    • On Linux: the executables in /path/to/installation/bin/ (do-not-directly-run-firestorm-bin, dullahan_host, SLPlugin and SLVoice)
  • The cache folder
    • In its default location, the folder is hidden on most OSs. To find it, you will need to show hidden folders. Now you need to locate the cache folder:
      • Windows 64-bit: C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\Firestorm_x64
      • Windows 32-bit: C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\Firestorm
      • Mac: /Users/[USERNAME]/Library/Caches/Firestorm
      • Linux: /home/[USERNAME]/.firestorm_x64/cache
  • The Settings folder
    • In its default location, the folder is hidden on most OSs. To find it, you will need to show hidden folders. Now you need to locate the settings folder:
      • Windows 64-bit: C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\Firestorm_x64
      • Windows 32-bit: C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\Firestorm
      • Mac: /Users/[YOUR USERNAME]/Library/Application Support/Firestorm
      • Linux: /home/[USERNAME]/.firestorm_x64 (which also contains the cache)
  • The Chat Transcripts folder
    • In its default location, this is the same as the Settings folder. If you have relocated your chat files, then note that path.

REBOOT your computer at this time.

Run the viewer to ensure that it is working correctly; do a test of search and voice to ensure that both work, checking that the respective plugins get loaded. LOG OUT of the viewer.

Re-enable your anti-virus software if you disabled it, and run the viewer again, repeating the tests above.

Whitelisting Steps for Specific AV Software

If you don't find your antivirus program listed, or the instructions are out
of date, check the help files or support site for your antivirus program.

Adaware free

  • Open the Adaware user interface
  • Click Scan Computer (second icon from top)
  • Go to Manage Exclusions and click View
  • Click Add
  • Navigate to main Firestorm application folder
  • Click OK
  • Repeat for Firestorm folders in User/Local

Advanced System Care

If you run the “junk files cleanup” function, then Advanced System Care is liable to trash your settings. Further to this, this program can also severely interfere with viewer connection to SL servers, as documented here.

Avast

2019-09-18 Update

it seems that in the early hours of 2019-09-18, an update was issues for Avast, and that update began “mangling” Firestorm. One user 1) provided the following:

I went into my Avast Virus Chest and scrolled to the bottom of the list where the Firestorm file to see if there was still a way to make an exception there….on the far right, after highlighting it, I saw 3 dots and there is an option there to Restore and Add Exception. I clicked it and it said The File was Happily Restored!

So what this is about is just to let you know that I didn't have to go through the procedure to Whitelist, in case you want to let others know who may have put it in the chest.

I reinstalled Firestorm over my present one just so I could get the shortcut (icon) again…logged on and all is well.

Basic Whitelisting

Refer to this page for how to whitelist. Please ensure that you whitelist both the viewer and the viewer cache folder.

If you cannot save snapshots to your hard drive
  1. Go to Settings → General tab
  2. Go to 'Blocked and allowed apps'
  3. Click 'Allow App' and scroll the list of programs to find Firestorm and select it (see picture below)

AVG

  • Open the AVG user interface.
  • Click Tools→Advance Settings.
  • Resident Shield→Exceptions.
  • The Add the program (or file, directory) you wish to be excluded from scans.

Bullguard

  1. Open Bullguard as normal
  2. Click on “Settings”
  3. Click on “Advanced”
  4. Go to “Antivirus” in the lefthand column
  5. Open the menu (down arrow)
  6. Select “Tuning”
  7. In the selection of tick boxes on the righthand panel, select Skip File/Folders
  8. Click on Files/Folders
  9. This will bring up a probably empty set of lines, so click on the “+” sign
  10. This should allow you to navigate to the particular folder, in this case the Firestorm Cache folder
  11. Select that and it will appear in the first line of the box
  12. To add other Firestorm folders listed at the top of this wiki page, repeat as needed
  13. Here is also a check box to allow you to skip processes. The procedure is the same: Click on “process”
  14. Click “+” and navigate to the .exe you wish to whitelist
  15. Close Bullguard.

Comodo

Apparently Comodo adds a green border round the viewer screen. This can safely be ignored.

F-Secure

(derrived from https://community.f-secure.com/t5/Security-for-PC/How-do-I-exclude-a-file-or/ta-p/15398)

  • Open Computer Security.

  • Select Other settings > Manual scanning.
  • Click the Exclude files from the scan link. The Exclude from scanning dialog is displayed.
  • Select the Objects tab.
  • Select the Exclude objects (files, folders…) check box.
  • Click Add.
  • Navigate to and select the Firestorm install folder
  • Click Add again
  • Navigate to and select the Firestorm cache folder
  • Click OK to close the Exclude from scanning dialog.

Gatekeeper (Mac OS X)

Gatekeeper is not an antivirus. It is Apple software that checks software the first time you run it to make sure it is from a known developer. It will flag Firestorm as unknown and will ask you if you want to let it run.

If Gatekeeper prevents you from opening Firestorm, there is a simple workaround: See “How to open an app from a unidentified developer and exempt it from Gatekeeper” on this page. Once you have allowed Firestorm to open via this method, Gatekeeper will not flag it on subsequent launches (until you reinstall Firestorm again).

For a longer-term method, please visit here for a tutorial on whitelisting using the Gatekeeper software.

Kaspersky

In order to create an exclusion rule:

  • Open application settings window.
  • Select Protection on the left.
  • Click the Trusted Zone button in the Exclusions block.
  • Go to the tab Exclusion rules and click Add.
  • Select an exclusion type in the Properties field: Object and/or Threat type.
    • Object
Click select object and choose a file, folder or a mask to exclude.
    • Select a Component in the corresponding field. The rule will apply to the selected component.
    • Threat type. Click enter threat type to select a file, folder or a mask to exclude.

Rules can apply to the following protection components:

  • Virus scan,
  • File Anti-Virus,
  • Mail Anti-Virus (Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 for Windows Workstations 6.0.4.x only),
  • Proactive Defense (Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 for Windows Workstations 6.0.4.x only),
  • Web Anti-Virus (Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 for Windows Workstations 6.0.4.x only).

A scan if a disk or folder containing excluded objects scans the entire disk/folder except the excluded objects. Yet you can force scan excluded objects from the contextual menu (by right-clicking).

Also you can create an exclusion rule from within a report window:

  • Right-click the report object you want excluded.
  • Choose the option Add to Trusted Zone.

An Exclusion rule window will open. Make sure that you are satisfied with the new exclusion rule settings. Object name and threat type fields are assigned automatically on the basis of the report data. Click OK to create the rule.

Download Intelligence

Norton Internet Security includes a feature called Download Intelligence. This works such that the user community reports downloads as good or bad. While this may be very helpful, it can also be unfairly detrimental to programs, especially when they are updated as they are then treated as totally new.

Therefore, if you use Download Intelligence, you are urged to disable it before attempting to download any of our viewers, in order to avoid them being incorrectly reported as infected with a virus. Refer to this page for instructions.

Panda Cloud Antivirus Free (version 2.1.1)

  • Click on the “Antivirus” section of the UI.
  • Click on “Advanced Settings” (bottom of the panel current version)
  • Click on “Exclusions” tab
  • Choose “Add”, then navigate to your Firestorm installation folder and put a check in the box to the left of slplugin.exe (and llceflib_host.exe for FS 4.7.7 and later), and everything else you want to exclude. Once you've checked something, the “exclude” button at the bottom of the panel is enabled. Click it when you've finished checking off everything you want to exclude.
  • Click “OK” at the bottom of the “Exclusions” tab.

See this page for additional Panda tips for whitelisting files and folders: http://www.pandasecurity.com/homeusers/downloads/docs/product/help/is/2012/en/709.htm The page is out of date but the methods may still work.

PC Tools Spyware Doctor

  • Right click PC Tools icon in taskbar → Open
  • Go to Settings → Global action list
  • Click “Add”, choose “File” & browse to your Firestorm installation folder & choose slplugin.exe - and llceflib_host.exe (for FS 4.7.9 and later).
  • This will add the plugin(s) to the global whitelist.

Webroot

To date (August 2015), there is no way to whitelist the entire cache folder in WebRoot. Therefore WebRoot may continue to cause severe problems including slow rezzing and viewer freezing.

If you test with WebRoot off and find your SL experience greatly improved, the only suggestion we have is to choose another antivirus program.

Some more more info on Webroot and the problems it has been known to cause, see this page.

    • Repeat this for 32-bit Firestorm ( C:\Program Files (x86) )
Can't Save Files to Hard Drive (Snapshots, Chat Files, Backups, etc.)

Additionally, if you're on Windows 10 and you can't save snapshots to your hard drive (https://jira.firestormviewer.org/browse/FIRE-23347), adding the viewer folders to the exclusion list may not be enough if you have 'Controlled Folder Access' enabled; you will need to add Firestorm to the allowed apps.

Try following these steps:

  1. Right click your Windows Defender icon on your system tray > View Security Dashboard > Virus and threat Protection > Virus & Threat Protection Settings > Controlled Folder Access
  2. Click the 'Manage Controlled Folder Access' link
  3. Under 'Controlled Folder Access' click the 'Allow an App through Controlled Folder Access' link
  4. Click '+ Add an allowed app'
  5. Browse to the viewer executable in the installation folder, left click to select , click Open at the bottom of the files explorer.

Alternatively, you can also simply disable the Controlled Folder Access feature by clicking the on/off button after Step #2.

Searching

It is possible to search the menus for specific words or phrases, by typing into the search bar at the top. For example, typing in the word upload will result in matches on up to four top menu items: Avatar, Build, Advanced and Develop. In short, using search will filter out what is shown in the top menu bar, removing all items except those that contain what you searched for.

Matched items are highlighed in color (you can change the highlight color in Preferences → Colors -> Miscellaneous→ Preferences Search Highlight Color).

To clear the search, and have the Preferences window revert to its normal state, just click the 'x' at the far right end of the search field.

Menu search is enabled (or disabled) in Preferences -> Advanced→ Show Menu Search.

Camera Presets

Hovering your mouse over the small camera icon, or clicking it (depending on your preferences setting), will open the Camera Presets window. Camera presets can be created in Avatar menu → Camera Controls → Position.

Graphics Presets

: Hovering your mouse over this symbol, or clicking it (depending on your preferences setting), will open the Graphics Presets window. Please note that this symbol will only show if you have created a graphic preset in PreferencesGraphics -> General.

Movement Issues

My Avatar Can't Move

If you can turn in circles but not move forward/backwards, you probably have Movelock enabled.

  • Go to the Avatar menu→ Movement submenu and make sure Movelock is not ticked.
  • See Movelock info for more information or if you are unable to change the Movelock setting.

However, there are a few other things to try:

  • Go to a different region and see if you are able to move there. If so, something at your original location is causing the problem.
  • If you are using a LAQ mesh head, make sure you don't have the Pose feature turned on.
  • Make sure you don't have some other HUD with a pose feature. (For instance, one user has reported this problem with the Lelutka Axis face HUD.)
  • If you can't find what attachment is causing the problem, try going to Advanced menu (Ctrl-Alt-D ) → Release Keys.
    • Note: Release Keys will be greyed out if RLV has locked any of your attachments. To disable RLV, go to Prefs → Firestorm → Extras, untick the top item, and then relog.
  • Make sure you don't have the Firestorm pose stand active.
    • If you have the Pose Stand button on your toolbar, make sure it's not “on.”
    • If you don't have the button, go to Avatar menu → Toolbar Buttons, drag the Pose Stand button out to your toolbar, and make sure it's not “on.”

You can control the MoveLock behavior in Firestorm 4.6.5 and newer via PreferencesMove & ViewMovement:

  • Always re-lock position after region changes > When enabled, MoveLock is disabled during teleport, then re-enabled it after you arrive. When disabled, MoveLock is not re-enabled after a teleport
  • Lock and unlock position after stopping or starting movement > When enabled, MoveLock is temporarily disabled when you manually move your avatar, and re-enabled when you stop moving. When disabled, you will be unable to move your avatar while MoveLock is enabled.

Also in PreferencesFirestormExtras, at the bottom, is Enable LSL-Client Bridge. This must be enabled in order to use MoveLock.

Can't Turn After Failed Region Crossing

If, after a failed region crossing on a vehicle, you find yourself unsat from the vehicle, and able to walk forward/backward, but unable to turn left or right after stopping animations then recreate the bridge: top menu, Avatar → Avatar health → Recreate LSL Bridge.

My Avatar Is Stuck in an Animation

  • Tap your PageDn key and see if the animation stops. If it does, you were in crouch.
  • Try Avatar menu → Avatar Health → Stop Animations & Revoke Permissions.
  • Try right clicking your avatar → Reset Skeleton & Animations.
  • If the above items did not work, go to a different region and try them again.
  • If you have the animation in your inventory, play it from inventory, then click Stop.
  • Remove attachments one by one until the animation stops. (This will eliminate worn items as a cause.)
    • Note: Animations can be in ANY attachment. Please don't assume that any particular attachment is not the problem. Take them all off.
    • Note: Attachments are anything with a box icon. Look in Inventory → Current Outfit folder to see all your attachments.
  • Make sure the Firestorm AO is off:
    • On the AO button on your toolbar, untick the checkbox.
    • Note: The Firestorm AO can be active even if the button is not on your toolbar. If it is not on your toolbar, go to Avatar menu → Toolbar Buttons, drag the AO button out onto your toolbar, and make sure it is not ticked.
  • If you know that a “sittable” item gave you the animation:
    1. Go to Preferences → Firestorm → Protection → Revoke Permissions.
    2. Temporarily set this to “Revoke on Sit and Stand.”
    3. Sit on the item, then stand. This should stop the animation.
    4. CRUCIAL: Change Preferences → Firestorm → Protection → Revoke Permissions back to either “Never” or “Revoke on Stand.”
  • Try Advanced menu → Release keys. (After doing this, you will need to recreate the FS bridge: Avatar → Avatar health → Recreate LSL Bridge.)

Furniture or Pose Ball Does Not Animate Me

  • You may simply be experiencing lag: See Troubleshooting Lag for tips to reduce this.
  • Many pose balls will request permission to animate you. If you did not see the animation request, look in your Notifications window for the message. Click “Accept.”
  • Make sure you have not blocked the item or its owner: Look in Comm menu → Block List, see if the item or the item's owner is there, and remove the item/person from the block list.
  • Go to Preferences → Firestorm → Protection → Revoke Permissions. For normal use, this should be set to either “Normal” (no protection) or “Revoke on Stand.” It should normally NOT be set to “Revoke on Sit” or “Revoke on Sit and Stand,” as both of these will prevent items from animating you when you are sitting.

Mousewalk Doesn't Work

Remove all attachments, then add one by one, testing in between to see if one causes the problem.

The TMP “Legacy” body HUD is known to cause this problem. Turn off the cam control located on the HUD.

My Avatar Is Rubber-Banding

“Rubber-banding” is when you try to walk forward and then suddenly snap back to a previous position. Sometimes you will seem unable to stop walking. This is caused by region lag, when the server can't keep up with processing avatar movement (collisions).

  • For info about region lag see here: Region Lag
  • For some things that region or parcel owners can do to reduce region lag see here: Reducing Server Lag.

My Avatar Slides When Trying to Walk, but No Animation Is Playing

This typically happens when you have two or more conflicting AOs (animation overriders) on.

  • Start by removing known AOs until you are wearing only one known AO.
  • If that doesn't help, start by removing other HUDs, then all other attachments, one by one, until it stops. Any worn item can contain an animation, so don't assume that some items are “ok.”
  • Note: Attachments are anything with a box icon. Look in Inventory → Current Outfit folder to see all your attachments.

My Avatar Keeps Spinning

  • Try turning the opposite direction to the spin.
  • Try pressing BOTH right and left arrow keys at the same time, repeatedly.
  • Relog.

My Avatar Jerks When Changing Animations

  • Remove other attachments that contain animations.
  • Remove or turn off ankle-locks.

My Avatar Is Floating a Few Meters Above the Ground

This is a possible bridge problem: recreate bridge by going to Avatar menu → Avatar Health → Recreate LSL Bridge.

My Avatar Goes Forever Upward

This is a possible bridge problem: recreate bridge by going to Avatar menu → Avatar Health → Recreate LSL Bridge.

My Head Keeps Moving Even When "Head Follows Mouse" Sliders Are Set to Zero

For unknown reasons, some users need to change an additional setting:

Go to Preferences → Privacy → Lookat, and tick “Don't send any look at targets at all, even to myself”

I Am Stuck Running

  • In most cases, pressing Ctrl-R to toggle run mode will get you back into walk (though it may in some cases be necessary to hit Ctrl-R more than once).
  • If you are wearing a scripted AO (animation overrider), turn off any “running” features it has.
  • If you are using the Firestorm built-in AO (animation overrider), make sure there are no running animations in the “Walking” or “Standing” categories.

After Strafe

Ref. BUG-6825

In one specific case, the above will not work. Specifically:

  • You have Preferences → Move & View → Movement → Tap-tap-hold to run enabled.
  • Press shift, then tap-tap-hold the left or right arrow key

That gets you running sideways. If you release shift before the arrow key, you will be stuck running.

To stop running, you have to repeat the sequence: press shift, then tap-tap-hold left or right arrow.

I Can't Get My Lips to Stop Moving

  • Go to Preferences → Sound & Media → Voice, and deselect “Move Avatar Lips When Speaking.” Note: This is the only viewer feature that affects lip movement.
  • If you are wearing a mesh head, turn off any animations in the head. For more help, ask the support group for that head.
  • Go to Comm menu → Gestures. Tick “Active only” at the bottom of the window. Review the list for any gestures that might contain a face animation. If in doubt, turn them all off, one at a time, to find the one responsible for the lip movement.

When Standing Up from a Groundsit, I Start Running

This is a known SL bug also affecting the SL viewer. Refer to this SL bug report for more information.

My Head Bobs After I Type

This happens if you turn off this setting: Preferences → Chat → Typing → “Play typing animation when chatting.”

* To stop the head-bobbing, go to Preferences → Chat → Visuals, and disable “Play avatar animations (such as shouting).”

Note: If you can't get your avatar to stop typing, see Turning Off Typing.

My Stand Button, or Stop Flying Button, Is Missing

The Stand button and Stop Flying button can appear in two different places: on the Move Controls floater, or lower left above the Nearby Chat bar.

Missing Stand (or Stop Flying) Button on Move Controls

If you have the Move Controls floater open, and you are sitting/flying, the button will appear on that floater. If it isn't there, you are probably not sitting/flying. Make sure you are really sitting/flying; the button should appear.

Missing Stand (or Stop Flying) Button Above Nearby Chat Bar

If you do NOT have the Move Controls floater open, the button will normally appear lower left on your screen, above your Nearby Chat bar.

Stand button above Nearby Chat:

If you can see your Nearby Chat bar, and there is no button, then one of these is happening:

  • You are not sitting/flying. Try sitting on something, or make sure you are flying.
  • The Move Controls floater is open (see above). Find it on your screen and close it if you wish. If you can't find it, look in the Avatar menu. If there is a checkmark next to Move Controls, uncheck it, and then the button should appear lower left, above your Nearby Chat bar.

Missing Stand (or Stop Flying) Button When You Have Nearby Chat Set to Auto-Hide

Stand button if you have Nearby Chat hidden:

If the button is not there, one of the following is happening:

  • You are not sitting/flying. Try sitting on something, or make sure you are flying.
  • The Move Controls floater is open (see above). Find it on your screen and close it if you wish. If you can't find it, look in the Avatar menu. If there is a checkmark next to Move Controls, uncheck it, and then the button should appear lower left.
  • You have shrunk the Nearby Chat bar off screen to the left. If you do that, the button will also disappear off left. To check, click in-world anywhere on the screen but not in any windows. Then click Enter on your keyboard to activate the Nearby Chat bar. The Nearby Chat bar should appear lower left on your screen, and if you are sitting/flying, the button should be above it.
    • If the Nearby Chat bar does not appear, it is probably off left. To get it back, look in the lower left corner for a portion of it. Hover your mouse over it until you get a double-pointed arrow. Then grab and move it to the right.
    • If you can't see any part of the Nearby Chat bar, and hovering your mouse doesn't give you a double arrow, you may need to clear your settings and set them from scratch. See How to Clear Your FS Settings.

Workarounds

Other ways to stand:

  • Right click your name tag and choose Stand from the menu.

  • Select Avatar menu → Movement → Stop flying.
  • If you have the Fly button on your toolbar, it will be highlighted. Click it to stop flying.
  • Press PageDown on your keyboard until you stop flying.
